25.01.2022 Last Friday, The Tiing was awarded a commendation at the AIA International Chapter Architecture Awards. It is a great recognition for a powerful little project and to know that scale or location is not a useful substitute for quality. It is also lovely to see the calibre of the other projects awarded alongside of it and know that it is held in the same regard. Congratulations go to our team for their skilled design hands, specifically Craig Nener, Michelle Kar and James Russe...ll. Thank you once again to Ben Hosking for the gorgeous photographs. Thank you to our clients, Parisuda Mangun and the teams at Manguning and Luwak Villas, you should all be very proud of this project and the esteem it is held in on the international stage. To the team behind and in stewardship of @the_tiing_tejakula, this is just reward for all the hard work put in through the conception, execution and running of this project. Many thanks to you all and I sincerely hope we will be all able to meet again soon. - Jury Citation: Situated on the northern coast of Bali, the Tiing immediately stands out through its visible connections with the vernacular forms and construction techniques of the land it inhabits. Embracing its climate and means of production as an expression of rugged regionalism, the planning and massing of the architecture responds to wind, views and celebrates the symbology, craft and materials of Balinese culture. 21.01.2022 North Perth, where this project is located, is a suburb in transition without much extant condition or remnant character. It is the fringes of the city washing over the endings of the suburbs. The project doesnt act deliberately to distinguish itself from its immediate context, nor does it resolve to fit in. It is distinct in its presentation and the arches to the east and west first floor facades hover somewhat strangely over the traditional rooflines of neighbouring houses.... It proposes a different form of inner-urban occupation. 20.01.2022 Last Friday night, the #nbnorthperthhouse picked up two Architecture awards, as Best New House, and Best Interior at the Australian Institute of Architects WA Awards for 2020. We are very proud. It was a different sort of night, all being held digitally. Still it was great to celebrate with our team and the builders of the project, @collierhomes. The project now goes on to the National Awards Program to be considered against a select few winners from the rest of Australia. 04.01.2022 It was great to welcome people through our (almost) complete #nbeastfremantlehouse for an event hosted by @designfreo. What was great was having a conversation in collaboration with our client (@jlithgo) and the builder (@talo_construction) around the process of briefing, designing, building, and living in a home. The important message is that design doesn’t have to be expensive, isn’t ‘bling’ or unobtainable for the housing we produce. ... Great design is 95% about getting the fundamentals right and that can be seen in this house. The most important part of this project is the bit we didn’t build - a big space for a northern garden. This garden gives amazing light, winter sun, breeze, amenity, aspect and connection across the site.
