24.01.2022 My beautiful blue bride Rebecca, in her custom made silk shibori dyed gown with detachable cape-veil. It might be time to track down some more silk, get out my dyes again and have a play. There is no fibre comparable to silk when it comes to getting vibrant colour. @rebeccaprinceartist . . .... #customsilk #bluebride #handdyedsilk #weddingdress #bridaldesigner #dressmaker #mybusinessmay #apostaday #socialmediaoverhaul See more

24.01.2022 Draping is one of my favourite parts of designing. It's all about controlling the flow of fabric around the body without forcing it. Many pins are required and a sturdy body form to mould to. I found a second hand dress form yesterday and am so happy to add her to my studio. I've been on the lookout for one for years. I can't wait to start draping her in beautiful fabrics. Now to name her. Any suggestions?? . .... #draping #dressform #dressmaking #pleating #handdyedsilk #secondhand #needsaname See more

22.01.2022 Playing with natural dye is definately a learning curve and the results are so unpredictable and almost never repeatable. About a month ago I had a play with brown onion skin dye and soy mordant( a mordant helps bind the colour to the fibres). The initial test results gave rich rust brown tones with slight variations depending on the pH of the dye solution. I chose to dye my fabric with the higher pH solution. Lesson 1: The actual fabric didn't come out as rich as I would ...have liked and was a bit too close to my natural skin tone for me to wear. Which probably means I needed more onion skins to achieve my desired colour. I decided to experiment more and test a piece with iron added to the dye bath (basically added some rusty nails) the result was a beautiful khaki green. Lesson 2: test your pH...I didn't check the pH of my main dye bath and ended up with a muddy poo brown colour instead of my khaki green and a very mottled uneven colour. Lesson 3: just have fun with it...my results weren't wearable so I got out some lemons, bicarb, apple cider vinegar and some rusty water to see if I could create a army camo sort of effect. Alas still not wearable, unless I wanted to create a homeless grunge sort of look....not really my cup of tea. Like I said, a learning curve, but lots of fun. I have since used my commercial acid dyes to over dye this to a dark slate grey which I can wear when I decide what to turn it into because I hate to see fabric wasted.

22.01.2022 I have this pile of left over pieces of dyed silk from garments over the past 12 years. They are just too pretty to throw away. I've used a few bits here and there for small gifts. Yesterday I stumbled upon some fibre art on pinterest and am inspired to finally put these scraps to use sooner rather than later. Sooo much potential just waiting to be unleashed. . .... . #feelinginspired #silkscraps #handdyedsilk #fullofpotential #rainbowcolours #fibreart #mybusinessmay See more

18.01.2022 The most exciting part of playing with dye is the unknown. Will it look ok? Is it going to be a muddy mess? Has the dye taken to the fabric? There are no rules and every fabric reacts differently. Sometimes it's amazing and you wonder how you can achieve the same results again. Sometimes you wish you hadn't gone that one step further and ruined what you could have had. ... This image was part of the ice dyeing process for a custom kaftan for @melissaslittle . 17.01.2022 Today I made some changes to an old dress of mine that I made for myself years ago. I replaced the 3 random pearls on the back with a full row of vintage bridal buttons and added two panels to the back skirt to give it more fullness. I love this gorgeous embroidered cotton fabric that I bought in Bali about 10 years ago. Unfortunately it no longer fits me so I'm sending it on to a new home with @mrs_millers_maloo who has a far nicer climate to wear this pretty sun dress. ... . . . #repair #reuse #rehome #vintagebuttons #sundress #embroideredcotton #mybusinessmay #apostaday See more

17.01.2022 It's #memademay so I thought I should make something a little more casual for myself to wear for a change. I usually draft all my patterns myself but have bought a few from the big 4 to play with. This one is #mccalls7892 with a few changes. It needs a few more tweaks if I am going to make it again, but happy with how it turned out and the mix of blue and brown prints. Layered over leggings and a pair of boots, its an easy autumn outfit. . . . #mccallspatterns #memade #autumnoutfit #sianmademedoit #wrapdress #mybusinessmay #apostaday #socialmediaoverhaul

16.01.2022 Midnight blue!!! What a fantastic colour on this blue eyed bride, complimented beautifully by her ladies in fuschia. This wedding was always going to be an awesome celebration with some nuptials thrown in. Complete with balloon ladies instead of bridesmaids and a party dress transformation. I absolutely loved Fiona's vision for her unique wedding day.... #mybusinessmay #selfchallenge #apostaday #socialmediaoverhaul #bridaldesigner #lace #satin #navyblueweddingdress #unique #bride #unconventionalbride #partydress #fleurieupeninsula #southaustralia #prettydetails #bridalinspiration #dressmaker #alterations #custommade #nicholeparnellstudiocreations

13.01.2022 A Melbourne cup get-up from a couple of years ago. 04.01.2022 Holy Guacamole!! There's more than a few pattern pieces to trace here. 45 seperate pattern pieces, most of those used to cut duplicates of fabric and lining and interfacing.
