23.01.2022 1st Instalment - 22/06/2018 This was a unique adventure, a solo trek in a desert. A 25km trek across Island Lagoon. Over the next 10 days I will share with you my amazing journey on a Solo trek in the remote, wild country of the beautiful, Island Lagoon, a salt lake in South Australia. It is Sunday, the 27th of May and I am doing my final preparation for the trek. Placing my equipment and essential items on the mat that I will use to sleep on. It is critical that I never l...ose contact with my backpack as it contains my food and water, as well as my emergency communication equipment. Sarah and Monique, my two support people created a wonderful tactile map, using sand, so that I could feel the geographic area and terrain I would be walking. This was a personal goal as well as an opportunity to raise funds for Vision Australia. 11.01.2022 NoNoNo! The improbable is happening! We are sitting on a sand dune. It is 7.30pm and we have a fire burning. Sarah is strumming her guitar and Monique and I are singing, well doing our best to accompany her. She is playing Crowded House. Her fingers are sliding up and down the strings. There is a long distant rumble to my right and a closer rumble to my left. There is an unusual stillness to the atmosphere. Suddenly, hell breaks loose... The wind is ripping and tearing at us and Sarah bundles me into the land cruiser. Sarah and Monique are shouting, running and grabbing tarpaulins from the vehicle. The thunder is roaring and rolling across the sky. I am wondering if the lightning is as spectacular, as the booming fireworks that is occurring. I know this is not good news for the solo trek. We are only 6km from the starting point on the salt lake and the rain is falling heavily. I can only imagine what is happening on the crusty salt lake surface and the bar of challenge is raised with every falling raindrop. Finally, I am in my swag, in my warm sleeping bag, between two small salt bushes. I drift into sleep with the rain continuing to fall on the tarpaulin just above my head. Everything has become uncertain and I know I will awake with a new challenge. The photos show the day after the storm and after testing out the surface - too muddy! See more
