05.01.2022 PRIORITIES AND TIME MANAGEMENT Something that seems to be a common theme at the moment is dealing with priorities and time management. Here are my tips to help you stay in control and organised... NICE TO DO/NEED TO DO... Separate all tasks under these 2 headings. You can even colour coordinate them so you can see priorities at a glance. Make sure "need to do's" are exclusively urgent, important, time critical or productive. EASY AS 1,2,3... Out of your "need you do's" work through them in this order... 1 - Something you have to do (time critical/ important) 2 - Something you don't want to do (stop procrastinating - get it done ) 3 - Something that serves others (fulfill your obligation to support others) Repeat BE HONEST ABOUT YOUR TIME AND CAPABILITIES TO OTHERS A lot of our time management issues may actually come from what other people put on to us throughout the day. We often get asked to support or assist others and take on more work than what we can actually handle foresaking our own needs. When someone asks you for help... Be honest about where their job will sit in your "queue" you may need to respond with something like "I can definitely help you with that but I need to do X and Y first so it may not get back to you until later today or tomorrow". If it is time critical they may get someone else to help them - THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE INCOMPETENT OR UNRELIABLE!!! In fact this will show them you take each task seriously and that you know how to manage your time and focus accordingly. Just because it is important to someone else, doesn't mean it has to be important to you. This transference of stressful energy is not conductive to efficiency or productivity. Things sometimes may pop up that need to be handled urgently, and you can manage that accordingly, but don't let someone else's poor time management hijack your day.
