24.01.2022 Wishing all of our supporters a very Happy and Blessed Christmas. Following the overwhelming success of our Knickers for Nairobi campaign, and the impact it had on improving the lives, and educational opportunities, for girls and women in the Kibera slum, Nairobi, we continue to seek lasting ways of enhancing the lives, and living conditions of these beautiful, generous, people. We recently were made aware of a small charcoal stove which use half of the fuel used by tradition...al stoves, greatly reduced emmissions, better heat gereration, and are insulated to reduce burns. And they are produced in Kenya. They cost about $50 au, and the Mt Beauty Uniting Church have purchased 10 of them, one to go to our sponsor child's family, with the rest to be distributed at the discretion of Sr Leonida and Sr Kevina. If we can halve their fuel bills, the families will have more to spend on other necessities, and also live more safely. When I say that the people are generous, after living with almost nothing, when they do get given something, they invariably share it. When we visited Kibera earlier this year, we were give $30 USD to hand to the mother of our sponsor child Maxwell. We recently received a letter, thanking us. She said it was the first dollars she had ever owned, so she bought materials for her tiny sewing and embroidery business, and with the shillings left over, she bought a plate of chocolate cake to share with her family and neighbors. Such small things to us can make a huge difference to them. We would encourage anyone who is interested, to consider the educational sponsorship of a child. It is hugely rewarding, and is the only meaningful way they have of ever escaping the slum. Graham Clutterbuck. See more
19.01.2022 The count has been completed and we are proud to announce that the wonderful people of the region donated more than 8,000 knickers! Plus bras!! Mount Beauty's Uniting Church member and organiser Graham Clutterbuck said that while he is immensely pleased and proud of this achievement, he is more pleased that we can help so many young girls experience dignity and educational opportunities. Thank you again to the incredible supporters out there who got behind the cause.

For anyone interested, we will happily accept any donations to assist with the cost of postage to get rest of the knickers across. 08.01.2022 Supporters of our efforts to improve the living conditions, and bring dignity, and education to the families living in the Kibera slum, are eagerly looking forward to Benjamin Mbasa visiting our region. Ben is the assistant director at WKW, Kibera, and is in Australia to address Women for Women in Africa's bi-annual fund raising dinner. This function is to be held in Brighton, Melb., but Ben specifically asked to visit the Mount Beauty Uniting Church, to thank them for the su...pport they gave through the Nickers for Nairobi campaign, and more recently, 'Cookers for Kibera'. Our current 'cooker' campaign aims to provide fuel efficient, safe and environmentally friendly charcoal stoves, to some of the poorest of the poor slum families. If all goes to plan, Ben will be bringing one of the stoves with him, to help with the program. If anyone would like to meet with Ben, or hear him speak, he will be visiting our church at 10am, Sunday, 20th May, and you will be most welcome. See more
06.01.2022 Knickers update! The final boxing session took place last week which saw 14 boxes packed, sealed, labelled and ready to send off. We are looking forward to hearing when the remainder of the generous donations arrive in Nairobi!
05.01.2022 An update for all those who supported the Nickers for Nairobi campaign. Julie and I have just returned from a fabulous wildlife trip to Africa, organised way before the NfN idea happened. A free morning in Nairobi gave us the perfect opportunity to visit the Women for Women centre in Kibera. I'm not sure how to describe the experience. Finally meeting Sr Leonida, Sr Kevina, and Ben, was just an honour. They are all people of such warmth, compassion, and commitment. We were le...Continue reading
05.01.2022 Hello friends. When last I posted on this page, we had sent money to Kibera for the purchase of 10 Jikokoa charcoal stoves. Amazingly, other donated monies were added to ours, and 20 stoves were purchased, and distributed to some of the neediest of the needy families. Wonderfully, the manufacturer gave then 15% off, and sent 2 representatives to deliver the stoves and demonstrate their proper use, AND offered all recipients 2 yrs warranty! That's a company that knows how to t...reat clients. The families chosen, (I'm glad I didn't have to decide), were thrilled, and reported almost immediate changes to their circumstances. For most, it was the first gift they had ever received, and the first new appliance they had ever had. I have since been told of other benefits of owning these stoves. It improves your social statue in the community, because you have this new, efficient appliance. They impact eye and lung health. Women who cook samosa's and other snacks to sell, can be almost blind from the effects of the green wood smoke, and many families suffer respiratory problems, simply from cooking smoke. Another issue left us shocked. There is NO unused wood laying around the slum, so women and children go to the Ngong State Forest to cut down trees and branches. Government rangers are told to arrest and beat these people, many are shot at, and some killed. Also gangs hide out in the forest, and beat and/or rape the women and children. Owning a new stove means not having to collect wood ever again. Exciting news for us, is that Ben Mbasa, the assistant director of the Women for Women Centre, (Wanawake Kwa Wanawake), in Kibera, is coming to Australia in May, for the Women for Women in Africa annual dinner, and has asked to visit the Mt Beauty Uniting Church, to report on how our support has helped. If you feel encouraged to further support the families of Kibera, these stoves cost a little under $50 Aust., and donations can be sent direct to WFWIA. I have included a few photos of the excited recipients of the stoves, and one of the ladies using hers outside her 'house'. See more
04.01.2022 Announcement: While this particular collection for Knickers has finished, we would like to point out that the needs over there in Nairobi are ongoing. If there are people who would like to contribute any further, donations for purchase of sanitary items would be gratefully accepted. Cheques can be made to the Mount Beauty Uniting Church and we can proudly guarantee that 100% of donations will go directly to Nairobi and be used to purchase sanitary items. If individuals, families or organisations would like to participate in educational sponsorship for a child from the slums, they can do so directly through Women for Women in Africa - http://womenforwomeninafrica.org.au You can also head over and like their facebook page here - https://facebook.com/wfwia/?hc_ref=PAGES_TIMELINE
04.01.2022 Here's a couple of pictures of the first boxes being unpacked in Nairobi, glad to see the first batch has made it the whole way safe and sound
04.01.2022 The Nickers have arrived! 10 boxes of undies and bras arrived much to the excitement of all involved. Leonida managed to get them through customs and they have ...started handing them out to the women at the centre. What we take for granted is such a luxury for them. As an additional bonus, extra money raised will be put towards sanitary items. Thank you so much to Graham whos hard work and determination has made this possible. We also thank the many people who donated nickers/bras of every shape and size, we have been humbled by your support. See more
