14.01.2022 I have always been an advocate for body positivity. This is because in my full-time training I was put under a lot of pressure and was completely miserable, suffered anorexia and bulimia which caused me health problems for many years afterwards. This is never ok. Nobody should ever be made to feel unacceptable. Nobody in any industry should be made to feel this. Nobody in any situation ever should be made to feel they are unacceptable. But it is the single most dangerous thin...g about the dance industry and it is the thought uppermost in my mind whenever I am deciding whether to recommend a student pursue a professional career or not. And there have been plenty of cases - in fact more often than not - when I have recommended one of my students not to pursue a career, despite being blindingly talented, because I recognise the damage the industry would do to them. And that's tragic because the world is being denied wonderful talent when I have to give advice like that. I do believe things are changing especially in this country. The Australian Ballet looks a lot healthier now than it did in the mid-90s. And I see more diversity in contemporary companies now then I did back then as well. Commercial dancers are no longer expected to be anorexic and I see lots of healthy bodies in that scene. This is all good but basically it has to start at the top; and while companies in the top 5% of the world's expertise are promoting eating disorders the way they do at the Vaganova Academy and New York City ballet, (and in 2011 when I saw the Paris Opera ballet perform they looked just as ill) then the rest of us are going to be fighting an uphill battle to make anything change. But fight we will. The mental health of generations of dancers is worth it!
