20.01.2022 I love the thyroid! Did you know that this little butterfly shaped gland, located near the front of the throat, operates on a feedback mechanism and is involved in the production and secretion of thyroid hormones. It takes iodine from food that we eat and uses this plus other nutrients to make thyroid hormones. These thyroid hormones are involved with your metabolism, hormonal balance, blood calcium levels, mood, energy production, gut function, weight management, appeti...te and blood glucose balance to name but a few. Simplistically the thyroid gland can become overactive (hyperthyroidism) or underactive (hypothyroidism). Hypothyroidism leads to symptoms such as hair loss, fatigue, sensitivity to cold, weight gain, increased cholesterol, constipation, hormone imbalances and infertility, mood changes and feeling mentally sluggish. This compares to hyperthyroidism which can lead to weight loss, anxiety, increased sensitivity to heat, irregular heart beats, increased appetite, tremor, hair loss difficulty sleeping and diarrhea. The main factors that impact thyroid health are increase in stress, nutrient deficiencies, infections, inflammation, sluggish liver function, gut microbial imbalance and exposure to environmental toxins.
