01.01.2022 Dyscalculia // Dyslexia // Dysgraphia // Dys- what?!! We recently completed further training in SLDs through the senior psychologists at SPELD. All of the terms above relate to SPECIFIC LEARNING DISORDERS (READING, WRITTEN EXPRESSION & MATHEMATICS). We thought we would pass on what we learnt as there are a lot of myths out there!! A SLD can ONLY be diagnosed by a psychologist (trained in SLD) using the DSM-V criteria and information gathered by allied health practitio...ners (usually OT and Speech) and their educators AFTER individualized therapy has been provided for more than 12 months. Learning DIFFICULTY vrs learning DISORDER? A learning difficulty is defined by a student having the potential to achieve age-appropriate levels if provided with support and instruction, whereas a learning disorder is defined by a difficulty that tends to continue despite appropriate targeted intervention and support (life-long). Soooo. Where should you start? READING- Our Speech Pathologist friends are your first port of call for a literacy and phonological assessment, a language assessment may also assist with educational supports (funding) at school. WRITTEN EXPRESSION- Your friendly OT can help with standardized motor coordination, visual perception and integration assessment to assist with targeting strategies and accommodations to support the student and educators at school. MATHEMATICS- You school educators will have access to numeracy assessments and remediation maths programs such as Number Shark and Dynamo Maths. Your support providers (if required) will then point you in the direction for a psychology assessment for a specific learning disorder. We refer on to the experts at SPELD Victoria. If you want more information on their services check out www.speldvic.org.au
