07.01.2022 So what is birth trauma or stress like. For many women it eats slowly into their sense of wellbeing and causes them to negate how they truly feel in day to day life. Covering up their emotions as they did when they birthed their own babies to be the new mother that society expects. Recently I held a birthing space for a rural, NSW mum and her second baby. No continuity of care, I got to know her in a few hours. She stayed open to my care and together we carved a safe space ...for her new baby to come. I stayed in the midwife role, so the doctor could only stand by and not change the dynamic we had created. She birthed her baby beautifully, and on reaching for her baby the look of joy and love on her face makes me cry now. She was so in love with her new baby and it was when she said "oh my god, I feel something." "I feel love" and started crying as she hugged her baby and told me she had felt nothing with her first baby. Her eyes sparkled as we made eye contact. Too much happening, too much interference. The interference began again yet I was able to shield her from the medical intervention and allowed her to keep her baby and her new feelings. Love and joy. Two amazing feelings and as she felt the love and joy, all of us did in the room. Birth with no fear. The grace stream of life. Even if it was only briefly for one, it was a beginning. See more
