11.01.2022 Cairns little theater has done it again, bringing us a great comedy being performed at the Rondo Theatre on Greenslopes Street. ‘One for the road’ is written by Willy Russell and it tackles the issue of aging, what we had dreamed for our future and the reality of that future. Despite the weight of these issues, the play is incredibly funny. If you are looking for light entertainment and a good laugh then look no further. With a cast of only four, you get all the action and d...rama you need. The Director Ken Cotterill chose his cast wisely and has brought out the best in each of them. Matt O’Conner steals the show as Dennis Cain, who faces turning 40 with less grace and more hijinks. Although it is set in the 1970’s England it is still very relevant to today and the midlife crisis all of us seem destined to have. Growing up is not easy and some of us do it kicking and screaming but in the end, the passage of time wins out. With Moments of sheer hilarity and some psychoanalysis that would put Sigmund Freud to shame, we are treated to a birthday dinner party gone wrong. Fitting in with the neighbours in suburbia is never easy and in this case, Dennis seems like a square peg in a round hole but are the Cain’s best friends Jane and Rodger Fuller really as happy and perfect as they seem? Kate Newman plays Jane who seems to have everything under control and Bruce Whitehead plays her husband Roger, a calm, easy going guy who loves his greenhouse and veggie garden but drinks perhaps a little too much. Candice Smee is Pauline Cain who tries to keep up with the Fullers and keep the household running smoothly but life is never a smooth ride. The set is very convincing as a bungalow and will bring back a few memories for those of us over 30. While the lighting and sound effects are rather basic, this only adds to the feeling of peeking behind the curtain into the lives of our couples. By the end of the first act, there are cracks beginning to appear in the perfect picture of suburbia and in the second act all hell breaks loose. Does Dennis like John Denver or not? Who is smashing gnomes and terrorizing the neighbourhood and do Dennis’ parents find the bungalow? To find out, grab a ticket to this wonderful armature performance and get ready to laugh.
