21.01.2022 6 August 2019 - Suspicious Activity - Doorknockers offering Free light bulbs -------------------- A resident in the Niddrie North (MNV 36) area has experienced two men walking the street offering free light bulbs this morning.... The first man made the resident uncomfortable. He had a rain coat pulled close around his face, wouldnt look at the resident and was annoyed and pestering when the service was declined. He did not show an ID card. The second guy came, an hour later, was less shady and apparently unaware of the first guy. This one showed an ID card. Both men tried to get the resident to book in an appointment to have them replace all the light globes. Both men had different pamphlets/books. -------------------- 8/Aug UPDATE: Police weve spoken to dont think the first man sounds legitimate, based on how the resident described his actions. If a person trying to sell you something at your door is acting suspiciously and doesnt show their identification when asked you should call police on 000 (Emergency) or 131 444 (Police Assistance) as soon as theyve left. Suspicious activity that happened hours or days ago can be reported to Crime Stoppers (1800 333 000 or https://www.crimestoppersvic.com.au/report-a-crime/ and list the incident under suspicious activity). This could be a variant of the Fake Tradies scam: https://www.consumer.vic.gov.au/faketradies Fake tradies can be reported to the national travelling con men hotline on 1300 133 408 between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday (except public holidays)

19.01.2022 Vic Police October Report for Moonee Valley Vic Police have reported that their biggest issue is theft from motor vehicles. The majority of these thefts are opportunistic and can be prevented by not leaving any valuables inside vehicles at all, and ensuring vehicles are locked.... Theft of mail/parcels from doorsteps has been increasingly common this year. This is due to people ordering more items online due to COVID restrictions. To help prevent mail theft, please try to ensure someone will be home for delivery, or redirect the parcel to another location (i.e post office/PO Box/neighbours house who you know will be home). Sometimes this is not an option, so if you can then try to provide details on a safer place for the parcel to be left that may be hidden more from street view. Online & phone scams are continuing. Please be cautious of giving your personal details via the phone particularly if it is an unexpected phone call. Don’t be afraid to hang up on the caller if you are unsure.

16.01.2022 Spot a Fake Tradie when he knocks on your door A friendly looking fellow is knocking on your door. You’ve never seen him before but decide to open the door anyway to say hello. He introduces himself as a tradesman, offering you a today only deal for roof repairs, house painting, gardening or driveway resurfacing. These are some tasks that have been on your list, but you haven’t quite got to yet. You’re intrigued as the price he is offering sounds like a good deal.... But don’t be fooled, you’ve just met a fake tradie. This incredibly un-Australian scam targets vulnerable people in their homes and asks for upfront payment on a service you would love to check off your to-do-list. Sadly, fake tradies only end up doing substandard work or won’t finish the job. You won’t be able to contact him as he will provide you with fake contact details. Beware of fake tradies, don’t open your door to them. See more

12.01.2022 What to do when Something Doesnt Look Right Things like: A car being driven around and around the same block Someone standing or sitting in a car, in the one place for a long period of time... Someone suddenly sprinting away We may not know who to report to. Is the odd behaviour serious enough to call the Police? Maybe it is a report for Crime Stoppers? Or depending on your location, report to a security guard? Do you go to your local station or do you phone 000? It depends on your location and what you have seen, but the basic rule of thumb is if you are seeing it now, call 000. If it is something you have seen earlier in the day, or are witnessing it now, but dont believe it is serious, you can call the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.

08.01.2022 CREATING SAFER COMMUNITIES WHAT IS NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH ? Neighbourhood Watch is a community-based crime prevention program. It aims to reduce the incidence of preventable crime and provide a safer community for Victorians. WHY NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH ?... Neighbourhood Watch is a proven Police and community partnership against crime. The program was introduced in Victoria in 1984 to assist the Victoria Police to effectively control the crime rate, especially the incidence of burglary and related thefts. WHAT ARE THE MAIN STRATEGIES OF NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH ? The Neighbourhood Watch program uses four strategies: Operation Identification Reporting suspicious behaviour Security and safety awareness Signposting OPERATION IDENTIFICATION Marking your valuables makes them less inviting to steal It increases the likelihood that the offender will be caught It provides a greater chance of the Police returning your goods to you when they are recovered Pens & engravers are available through your local Neighbourhood Watch. REPORTING SUSPICIOUS BEHAVIOUR Neighbourhood Watch will teach you how to identify and report suspicious behaviour Information gathered in this way is provided to local communities by way of area newsletters and the web site. SECURITY & SAFETY AWARENESS Newsletters and our Facebook pages and groups will provide you with the latest information and advice on: Personal safety Home security Home safety They can also inform you of local crime and trends in your area. SIGNPOSTING Your Neighbourhood Watch area will be signposted in prominent locations. These signs will act as a deterrent to criminal activity and indicate that the residents in the area take security seriously. HOW TO ASSIST SENIORS IN FIGHTING FRAUD JUNE IS ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS MONTH, which makes it the perfect time to sit down with your loved ones & help them learn how to spot a scam. It is important to teach Seniors the warning signs of a scam so they can defend themselves from potential fraud. Scammers are master manipulators. You may have heard of the grandparent scam that preys on Seniors and tries to take advantage of their emotions. A grandparent will receive a call in the middle of the night from someone claiming to be their grandchild. The call will say that they are in trouble in a foreign city, they need bail money immediately, & that they need this to be kept a secret from rest of the family. The caller will tell the victim where to wire the money and many grandparents do not hesitate to act. The truth of course, is that there is no emergency & the grandchild is safe; its the scammer who receives the funds rather than the grandchild.
