05.02.2022 We know that going completely and entirely plastic free for a whole month can be a pretty daunting concept, so for the next thirty days, look at reducing one or two items for this month. Some tips to get you started: -Remember your shopping bag... -Don't buy bin bags re-use shopping bags, produce bags, cereal bags -Switch your toothbrush for a bamboo toothbrush. -Say no to a straw - use a re-usable one -Buy fresh bread from a local bakery or make your own -Keep a fork and spoon in your bag -Only buy loose fruit and veggies -Bring your reusable coffee cup -Ditch paper towels for tea-towels -Buy your meat or cheese from the deli and use your own container -Switch out shower gel for a bar of soap (or at least make sure you look for a liquid that comes in a recycled plastic bottle!) -Use a soap bag to hold and wash with your soap bar. -Take a trip to the farmer’s market -Start using a reusable drink bottle -Do you buy soft drinks? Get yourself a SodaStream -If you have a bowl of food in the fridge you can cover it with a plate instead of plastic -Buy refills for cleaning products or use bicarb & vinegar. Did you know clove oil in the shower kills mould? -Wet Bags for dirty or wet clothing -Not buying anything new, go to the op-shop to reduce the waste and use what you already have -Look for food providers that are plastic-free and their philosophy is more sustainable See more

21.01.2022 11th May 2021. Today we welcomed Grace and Raylene from Urban Indigenous to Nido Willetton. Grace shared in her childhood experiences with the children and educators before commencing their art piece. The artwork was completed by Kinder and Kindergarten with Grace and Raylene. This piece is a representation of the children at Nido currently in the season of Djeran and the journey lines as we travel back and forth and move into the season of Makuru. ... The children in Kinder and Kindergarten had been preparing over the last few weeks for their visit and in conversations wanted to make Rebecca, Grace & Shelia a gift to say thank you. The children had drawn pictures and self-portraits to represent each of our visitors. Before Grace was presented with her gift on the day and was thanked by the children and educators, the children shared their Acknowledgment of Country. The children are immensely proud of their Acknowledgment and were excited to share with Grace and Raylene. Thank you Urban Indigenous for being apart of our Willetton Family and helping in our ongoing knowledge of Aboriginal Culture. Urban Indigenous

19.01.2022 With National Reconciliation Week fast approaching, we have an opportunity to reflect on our current journey towards reconciliation. National Reconciliation Week (27 May - 3 June) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. This does not happen overnight or during one week of isolated experiences, but over meaningful conversations and spont...aneous moments of learning at any opportunity that arises. Just this morning we spoke of the seasonal changes during Djeran and were surprised by a Djiti Djiti who has been visiting daily on the street. The Reconciliation Week theme this year is In This Together, acknowledging every one of us has a role to play when it comes to reconciliation. The question the Willetton team will be asking over the coming weeks is, what will our reconciliation focus be for the year to come? Post your ideas below
18.01.2022 We would like to thank the Minderoo Foundation for their generous gift of treats for the team at Nido Early School today. The thankyou treat box was a lovely surprise to end the week. We love the reminder to REDcycle the soft plastics and have already put them into our REDcycle collection. Minderoo have launched their Thrive by Five campaign, which is an initiative of Minderoo Foundation, campaigning to transform our early learning system and elevate early childhood outcome...s on the national agenda. We want to ensure more children, irrespective of where they live, can access and benefit from play-based learning which is crucial to their development and wellbeing. For more information about Minderoo or the campaign check out their website. https://thrivebyfive.org.au/

14.01.2022 This year we will be participating in the Backyard Bird Count for the first time. This is a citizen science project and the data we collected assists BirdLife Australia in understanding more about the birds that live in our communities across Australia. With the Nido Willetton children already keen bird observers at the service and the local park, we are excited to document our findings and participate in this initiative. Download the app and join us and many others across Australia in participating from the 19-25th October. https://aussiebirdcount.org.au/
11.01.2022 The Kinder children have been captivated by the books and posters from the Noongar Language Centre. We have had a particular interest in the local djerup (birds) who visit us throughout the day and what their names were. We talked about birds we had seen at the park, at our house, and at Nido. We then read Noongar stories about the Koorlbardi (magpie) and the Waardong (Crow) and their conversation with a Djiti Djiti (Willy wagtail) and a big disagreement they had. The story ...shared how each of the birds got their colours. The children's confidence has grown in their ability to name the birds and they have also integrated this into their play, creating their own Djiti Djiti dance moves, Waardong calls and re-enacting the history they are learning about. We are very thankful for the work and dedication of the Noongar Language Centre in keeping the Noongar language alive. We couldn't do this without you. #InThisTogether2020 #NRW2020

08.01.2022 The Kinder and Kindergarten children have been brainstorming ways to ensure the message of caring for the local community, specifically Granville Park, is communicated. We have been engaged in conversations, brainstorming, emailing, and creating signs and visual representations. We believe the children’s ideas should be heard, valued, and listened to. With this in mind, and by allowing children to have space and opportunity to voice their opinions, all we needed was an audie...nce who could listen to the children and support our influence for a clean environment. We were grateful to Cr Yaso Ponnuthurai who ensured the council had followed up our request to remove a large couch, chair and rubbish from the park. Then during a community walk we went to find Councillor Ben Kunze - City of Canning and present him with letters and engage in conversation about our concerns. Throughout the children have shown a great capacity for advocacy and their passion was obvious as they spoke of the rubbish and the impact on the wildlife, local flora, and their enjoyment of Granville Park.
06.01.2022 The AUSSIE BACKYARD BIRD COUNT count is nearly over, and with two days to go there is still time for your family to be involved in this citizen science project. The children and educators have been actively counting and observing the birds at Nido Early School and at the local park. This is a great way to learn more about the world around us and develop appreciation and respect for the natural world.
02.01.2022 During a walk at the local park the children were concerned to see a lost bike. Displaying active citizenship and caring the children sprung into action and knew they needed to tell someone. After reporting the lost bike we had officers attend Nido Early School Willetton, taking the bike and spending time with the children explaining the work they do in the community. In a gesture of appreciation, the Kindergarten children wrote letters and drew pictures for the wonderful of...ficers at Cannington Police Station. The stickers from the officers have come in handy and our Kindergarten junior recruits have been issuing tickets and enforcing the law around Nido. Thank you to the team at Cannington District - WA Police Force for turning a lost bike into a wonderful learning opportunity and helping the children to recognise the important work of the WA Police.
02.01.2022 The educators, children, and families have been generously collecting for the 2020 Vinnies WA Christmas Appeal. Please continue to give generously this Christmas, and drop to Nido Early School - Willetton or directly to the Riverton office.
01.01.2022 Today is the first day of National Reconciliation Week. Nido Early School Willetton acknowledges the Noongar people as Traditional Custodians of the Whadjuk land on which we meet, live, and play. We pay our respects to the Elders and Noongar people past, present and future. We would like to make special mention to some of the people who have been inspiring all of us at Nido Willetton over a number of years. Urban Indigenous, Aboriginal Dancers Koolangka's Kreate - KoolgangK...uz Kreate, Noongar Language Centre have all played an instrumental role in our developing understandings through workshops, resources, education, and inspiring conversation. #InThisTogether2020 #NRW2020 Reconciliation WA
