24.01.2022 We see changes in the states of matter every single day. Boiling water, evaporation in a hot shower, making a coffee and cooking an egg are all examples of matter which has changed its state. This scientific phenomenon was explored by our Kinder children this week, who used adjectives to describe the changes in the states of matter whilst making play-dough. With each step of the recipe, the children discussed how the substance felt, using words such as soft, like clouds, ...squishy and dusty. They described how the substance looked after adding water and again after kneading it with oil. Once the mixture was distributed to each child, they were given the opportunity to explore and play, integrating their fine motor skills as well as encouraging their sense of creativity. Science and everyday life cannot and should not be separated (Rosalind Franklin).
21.01.2022 Self-help skills are imperative during the early childhood phase of life. It is during this time that routines are established which influence and impact the future of independence in one’s life, therefore enhancing the importance of self-help skills. Experiences such as hand-washing, wiping their own noses, scraping plates and bowls, filling their glasses using water from a jug, taking care of plants and tidying the room are examples of just some self-help skills which our ...children use on a daily basis whilst in our care. At our service, self-help skills are age-appropriate and are demonstrated, implemented, guided and maintained in the rooms to ensure children receive ample opportunities to use and build on these skills in their lives. We encourage families to employ and encourage self-help skills at home, too. This will not only allow children to practice the routines used during their time at the service, it will also ensure these skills are built upon in a positive and meaningful way. 18.01.2022 Are you a family at Nido Southern River? Have you named a plant? Our vision is for all of the plants at Nido Southern River (and the future plants) to have their very own name as they are part of our Nido family too! ... Many children, families and Educators have already selected their plant and named him or her. Learning about plant life and integrating plant life into our rooms and into our service as a whole is a strong focus for us. The benefits of indoor plants are incredible and the learning opportunities are endless. When you are ready to name your plant, please email it through or see Levanah! To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow (Audrey Hepburn)

11.01.2022 Each week, our children engage in ‘Culinary Experiences’ with our cook, Amy. These experiences are conducted in small groups in our Piazza space and are aimed to introduce children to food choices and food types, as well as promoting healthy eating practices and harnessing skills such as measuring, colour recognition, counting, language development and interactions with others. This week, the children made smoothie bowls. Skills such as self-serving, using tongs, using servi...ng spoons and creativity were demonstrated during the experience and it was great to hear children asking questions such as: What’s this? and trying new foods. The children were provided with the opportunity to express their creativity and sensory development through their food choices as well as through discussions about what their smoothie bowls looked like, smelt like, sounded like (the blender was loud!) and tasted like. Cooking with kids is not just about ingredients, recipes and cooking. It’s about harnessing imagination, empowerment and creativity (Guy Fieri)

10.01.2022 ANZAC Day is held on April 25th each year. It is a day to remember, reflect, appreciate and recognise the efforts of members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, both past and present. Throughout the service last week, we recognised ANZAC Day in several ways. The children worked with Amy, our cook, during their Culinary Experiences to bake ANZAC biscuits. They engaged in discussions about the ingredients and the original purpose of these biscuits. Some children used... natural materials from our environment to create wreaths and some listened to The Last Post being played. Many of children engaged in reading sessions on the book ‘The Last Post’ by Kerry Brown and other children used their artistic skills to interpret and paint pictures of poppies. Due to the lockdown restrictions over the past weekend, ANZAC ceremonies could not be held. It is great to hear that some families honoured this event by standing in their driveways at dawn to commemorate the first landing at Gallipoli. They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.

05.01.2022 Today is Earth Day! Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970. Celebrating Earth Day serves as a conscious reminder of how fragile our planet is and how important it is to protect it. At the service today, the children recognised Earth Day in several ways. Some children made play dough with natural materials. There were discussions about endangered animals and fine motor skills... were used to ‘free’ these animals from their enclosures. Children engaged in experiences with ocean animals, painted pictures of the globe and used leaves that had fallen off trees to create leaf rubbings. Across the service we limited our use of lights and electricity and were also mindful of our use of water. Some facts to reflect on in support of the importance of Earth Day: More than half the world’s tropical forests have been destroyed since the 1960s In 2019, the world lost an entire soccer field worth of primary rainforest every six seconds Deforestation impacts 1.6 billion rural people worldwide who rely on forests for their livelihoods Every year 8 million tonnes of plastic end up in our oceans 70% of the oxygen we breathe is produced by the oceans Like music and art, love of nature is a common language that can transcend political or social boundaries (Jimmy Carter)
03.01.2022 Progressive meals in our Nursery room. The children in our Nursery room have started using the Reggio Emilia inspired concept of progressive meals. In our Nursery room, progressive meals means that the children do not have to all eat at the same time. They are asked if they are hungry and ready to eat and the Educators follow the verbal and non-verbal cues of the children to determine approximate and appropriate times for meals. A small group of children will then eat in th...e Nursery Piazza whilst the children who are not ready to eat continue to participate in their experiences. The concept of progressive meals helps children to build the ability to make choices for themselves and it also means that experiences do not have to be ceased in order for a meal to take place. Children can complete their experience before having their meal. In our Nursery, the children are learning vital self-help skills during their mealtimes, including how to use a spoon to feed themselves. ..the fact is that kids learn to make good decisions by making decisions, not by following directions (Alfie Kohn)
