25.01.2022 Thank you just doesn't seem enough. Because of you we are safe, our children and our families are safe.

24.01.2022 Supporting children's emotions sounds easier said than done.. here are some insights into how as parents and as a family we can hold space for our children and become attune to their needs. "... it's about being there without being in their hair. You have to be attuned to their needs and respect their autonomy. Non-interference and enough space to explore and make mistakes. Acceptance and tolerance. Where you subtly fulfil their needs without disparaging their dependence. Whe...n you as a parent provide empathic attunement to your childs needs, moods, fears, and joys, your child internalizes within himself a felt sense of a safe haven in the parent. Holding space for your kids is the only way for them to accept and tolerate themselves which in turn makes them tolerant of others. Good parenting is about empathetically holding space for your kids and allowing them to increase their window of tolerance." Source: https://mindkindmom.com/holding-space-for-your-kids-increa/

22.01.2022 As we creep closer to the festive season, we are reminded that many children are about to face change and transitions within their family, school and early childhood education and care settings. Take a moment to listen to an interview with Dr Justin Coulson as he supports families to navigate through change.

22.01.2022 First week of school done and dusted! This week we watched our 2021 preschoolers venture into the first stage of their enrolment at Nightcliff Primary School - a very exciting day for the children, their families and of course our Educators! A drizzly cool week also brought with it some lovely moments in the garden. We welcomed back our Mango Geese friends. We explored our beautiful vibrant garden and were gifted with the delivery of our new courtyard feature, our dungalaba (...crocodile) sculpture. This has been a feature for the children to explore, climb on and become a topic of conversation. We look forward to the many moments this feature will gift us in the future. We were forced inside when the rain got a little too heavy, but have loved the cooler weather this week. The senses were on overdrive with the cool breezes and scents, and the sounds of the rain and wind and even some thunder in the distance. While we observed the weather from the inside, we have loved continuing to explore our new environments for the year.

22.01.2022 We are currently welcoming donations of peoples used items to reuse in play! Items like old appliances, pots and pans, kitchen serving and mixing utensils, clothes for dress ups - just about anything is reusable in a play setting. Not only are children naturally more curious about these items in play, but the concept itself is also sustainable! Your junk is our TREASURE!!!

20.01.2022 A shift in mindset... a change of perspective When we begin to see children’s behaviour as a form of communication, we can then recognise that our children need us most when their behaviour challenges us the most. Pull in not push back. Hug and comfort, don't react. Show love and empathy first before we expect our children to talk to us about what it is that they are challenged by. Some of the biggest behaviours we observe in our children occur after school. There's a reason for this - we are our children's 'soft landing', their safety net. Catch them when they fall and lift them back up.

19.01.2022 Nothing beats a garden lunch of spaghetti bolognaise. Loving these cool days! Check out these cheeky smiles during lunch today with our Play Studio Two children. Have a glorious long weekend NT, and enjoy the ease of restrictions around the community. Stay safe

19.01.2022 Dear families, unfortunately Nightcliff Primary School, ELC and OSHC are still experiencing technical difficulties with phone lines. We are now able to dial out to make calls, however all incoming calls will be diverted to a mobile phone in the school. To reduce call traffic, I ask that if your call is not urgent, please email us as emails are monitored consistently throughout the day. Many thanks

18.01.2022 Meet Bella! Bella is a 7 week old mixed breed pup (Darwin Special breed, as the locals refer to her as). Bella has been visiting us at the ELC. The children and families have been very supportive of Bella visiting the service, identifying new opportunities for some children to interact and learn about caring for a puppy that they do not have at home. Bella has also helped to settle some of our friends at morning drop off. Bella has taught us some lessons this week. Puppys like to bite and chew and will loose all of their teeth for adult teeth - just like kids! Puppies can learn and Bella has learnt the word no, which helps us to teach Bella the rules. Puppies can learn to follow directions - Bella has learnt to sit! Puppies sleep A LOT! Puppies love cuddles. Puppies need clean ears. Puppies have toes and toe nails just like us too!

18.01.2022 This week has probably been the busiest week we have had at our little service in a long time! There were many celebrations and events taking place all in the same week and we selected two that we felt were the most meaningful to our children, families, Educators and community. NAIDOC... Throughout the week we have been exploring elements of our Aboriginal Australian culture and history. Our Play Studio 1 infants enjoyed painting images of barramundi and crocodile which is symbolic to the communities within Larrakia Country. Our Play Studio 2 children explored an Aboriginal Dreamtime story told by the Boandik People (located in Mount Gambier, SA) that explores the creation of a volcano. The children assisted Lourdes to create a volcano in the sand pit. They placed their hand print into its surface and observed its eruption. This experience was designed to further embed the land links and support the children's connections to the natural world. Our Play Studio 3 and 4 children unpacked the Aboriginal flag design and colours. They explored the symbolism behind the colours red, yellow and black, and then used these paint colours to create their own art. The discussion inspired a beautiful collection of work from the children. Michelle shared with the children the Kunwinjku Aboriginal Dreamtime story called "The Turtle and the Echidna". This story is very special to Michelle as her sons were apart of the movie production while living in the West Arnham region community of Gunbalanya. The story told how the turtle got his shell from rocks, and the echidna got his spikes from spears. DEWALI Today Educator Harpreet (Happy) brought in some of her traditional dress jewellery and clothing from her country, India, to teach us about the celebration of Dewali. Dewali is a Hindu celebration, also referred to as 'The Festival of Lights' - a celebration of light over darkness, good over evil. The children loved trying on the 'tika's' (head dress) and some of the clothing that Happy shared with us. Our Play Studio 2 friends very delicately painted clay 'diya's' (oil lights)... And the children in Play Studio 3 and 4 designed their own 'diya's' and then sculptured their 'diya's' out of playdough. A wonderful week of culture and insight into our magnificent multicultural community <3

18.01.2022 A big Happy Fathers Day to all of the dad's, father figures, important male role models and to the mum's doing both jobs, we wish you a happy day and we hope you enjoy your keepsakes from the children at our service. Have a wonderful everyone!

18.01.2022 Today is World Children’s Day. Today has invited us to reflect on how we as Early Childhood Educators incorporate and reflect on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. "The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child is an international human rights treaty which sets out the civil, political, economic, social, health and cultural rights of children". This document underpins everything we do as Educators and Advocates of children, and formalises a commitment to every child.

17.01.2022 Have you met our incredible CEO? we are so lucky to be led by such a strong group of champions who advocate so passionately for the rights of every child.

17.01.2022 Tune in at 11.30am NT time.

16.01.2022 Tomorrow!!!! Can't wait to see your crazy socks!!

15.01.2022 During #ScienceWeek2020 our children participated in various group art experiences, creating large scale turtles. These were given to #NightcliffPrimarySchool and added to the many turtle projects which collectively created a giant turtle image viewed and photographed from a satellite. This was a NT Department of Education project with schools participating throughout the NT. Check out the satellite image! (Zoom in on the school oval)

15.01.2022 See you all tomorrow!

15.01.2022 Once again we are staying in our PJ's all day on Friday July 17 to raise money and awareness to the Pyjama Foundation. We will be asking for a gold coin donation, however if you would like to give a little more or prefer an online donation follow the link below. Every little bit counts!

15.01.2022 Happy Early Childhood Educators Day everyone! We take the time today to thank all of our wonderful Educators for their hard work and recognise the important role that Early Years Educators have in the lives of young children. 'THANK YOU' If your child is not in attendance today, perhaps you would like to do a video message for the team at Nightcliff Community ELC!... https://www.earlychildhoodeducatorsday.org.au//special-tha See more

14.01.2022 Come dressed up as a bee or in bee colours to celebrate World Bee Day, raising awareness of the importance of bees and bee keeping. We have been having discussions between our staff and our children about the importance of bees and the many vital aspects bees contribute to our ecosystems. We would love to hear from anyone who has had experience in keeping native stingless Australian bees as we have begun researching having our own native bee hive in our Sustainable garden at the ELC, a joint project between the ELC and Nightcliff OSHC.

13.01.2022 Another week down and we are half way through February already! This week we were gifted with some beautiful sunshine. Its been a great couple of weeks, so it was nice for the children and Educators to be able to get out and about in the garden in the sun. Our chooks have become very curious and brave of late and this week they were out and about for the children to engage with - Anna chicken even laid an egg on the grass! We continue to find new and exciting ways to use our... loose parts materials - this week the crates were used as an obstacle course for Play Studio 2, where the children were encouraged to navigate through various heights in a continuous up down up down pattern. And didn't we see some interesting methods! Our Play Studio 1 infants and toddlers used toilet rolls to stamp love hearts with paint onto paper for Valentines Day. Look at the little faces with the incredible concentration on their faces as they focus on their hand to move the stamp up and down onto the paper. We had some yoga happening in Play Studio 3 and 4 this week, as well as some picnics by the lockers, a sandpit treasure hunt, and some awesome construction. The preschoolers were architects this week, designing their build before getting into the construction of a house. How impressive! Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

12.01.2022 This is a great explanation of how to support every child as an individual and recognise as a parent your child's personality and development and how you can support them.

09.01.2022 Reconciliation in action - Where to start? *** Be a good ally! *** 1. Preference our voices.... 2. Be ok with not always being part of the conversation. 3. Be there for the good times *and* the bad. 4. Say something when you hear someone say inappropriate things about Aboriginal people. 5. Don’t take it personally when we don’t agree with you. 6. Don’t go it alone. 7. Understand that Aboriginal people are *not* all the same.

04.01.2022 Some of our gems from last week

04.01.2022 It was so great to have some of our dad's and families come and spend some time with us this afternoon. A sausage is a great way to catch up and reconnect those relationships that were distanced through the past few months while we have had restrictions in place at the service. Here are some pics from today!

04.01.2022 1.... 2... 3 baby chickens!!! There's plenty more eggs still to hatch! We're all very egg-cited! :P Mumma is very protective and is keeping her babies warm and safe.

03.01.2022 Reconciliation in action - What next? *** Call out racism *** "Racism damages lives and livelihoods. Whether in the city, regions, online or in public spaces, getting abused, ignored, refused service or getting followed by security, has long-lasting damaging effects." https://nrw.reconciliation.org.au/actions-for-reconciliat/ ... Check you understand how your unconscious bias and attitudes affect your thinking and actions. "Unconscious biases are the learned stereotypes about certain groups of people that are formed outside of conscious awareness. They are automatic, unintentional, deeply engrained in our beliefs, universal and have the ability to affect our behaviour. Unconscious bias can be favourable or unfavourable attitudes which form the basis of positive or negative impressions of others." (Source: https://racismnoway.com.au//understandin/unconscious-bias/) https://www.sbs.com.au//what-can-be-done-reduce-unconsciou A study from the University of Washington revealed "negative biases can be conveyed through gestures, body language, and facial expressionsand that children pick up on these nonverbal cues to form their own biases." Allison Skinner, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Washington and the lead author of the study, says she "is hopeful that her work and the work of others will lead to important insights and potential avenues for avoiding social bias. At least it may alert parents and teachers to how their behaviorsand not just their wordsaffect children, so that they might try to be more aware of their own body language and aim for kinder treatment toward all kids." https://greatergood.berkeley.edu//how_adults_communicate_b" Did you know there is a method of testing your unconscious bias'? Although controversial, Implicit Association Tests are used by psychologists to measure individuals unconscious personal bias'. 03.01.2022 Today the infants and toddlers in Play Studio 1 made damper with lemon myrtle. Each child was invited to participate in the pouring and mixing of ingredients. The children and the Educators took time to enjoy the beautiful aroma of the native lemon myrtle. Once the ingredients were mixed each child was given some dough to knead and roll ready for baking. Renee (Service Director) and Michael (Food Coordinator extraordinare!) worked together today to review the service menus a...nd integrate native ingredients within our recipes. Here is a sneak peek at some of the new additions: * Surprise breakfast cups - baked spiced oat crumb, topped with Greek yoghurt, topped with fruit and a sprinkle of dried quandong. * Aussie bush stew with pepperberry and fresh made lemon myrtle damper. * Bush tomato and chicken rice pilaf. We regularly receive lots of great feedback from our children, staff and our families, so we will be sharing some recipes over the coming weeks - WATCH THIS SPACE! #NRW2021 #MoreThanAWord #cookingwithnativeingredients

02.01.2022 Fun in the sun on this beautiful dry season morning.. and then a sandpit building competition in the afternoon with children from Play Studio 3/4. Happy weekend everyone! Please note: there were no children harmed in the climbing pictures. These children are 2 year olds and some younger - knowing their own capabilities, calculating risks, and pushing their big muscles to do tricks on the climbing frame. These same children have been working up to this stage for weeks, practic...ing in their own time and making choices for their own learning and development. And yes, the child upside down has been practicing this trick for weeks AND she's just turned 2 years old! #expertlevelgymnastics #riskyplay #childrenmakingchoicesforlearning #capableandcompetentchildren See more

02.01.2022 On the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, a minutes’ silence is observed and dedicated to those soldiers who died fighting to protect the nation. In Australia and other allied countries, including New Zealand, Canada and the United States, 11 November became known as Armistice Day a day to remember those who died in World War One. After World War Two, the Australian Government agreed to the United Kingdom’s proposal that Armistice Day be renamed Remembrance Day ...to commemorate those who were killed in both World Wars. Today the loss of Australian lives from all wars and conflicts is commemorated on Remembrance Day. The day continues to be commemorated in Allied countries. We are so lucky to enjoy the freedoms we have today, so please take a moment to be grateful for everything you have
