16.02.2022 WATER UPDATE You may have noticed that I’ve been quite interested in water health and safety lately. We drink roughly 2 litres of water a day and 60% of the human body is made up of water so it goes without saying that water is a big contributor to our health. I definitely don’t claim to be an expert on water but I’ve been researching more into the different compounds that are found, formed or added to our water and what this might mean for us. We recently received a letter i...Continue reading

31.01.2022 I’ve been meaning to do this post for a while! It might be a little long but please stick with me, your health is worth the time to read this. I decided to do a test of Sunny’s mineral and heavy metal status using the Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis. I absolutely love this test as it provides so much information. I was doing it purely out of interest as Sunny doesn’t have any health concerns at the moment. I was shocked at the findings! Whilst the report is showing most heavy m...etals are not considered high, this is not an acceptable level for children and often what we see come up in reports for children having serious health issues (often behavioural, immune, skin, gut). So whilst he might not be displaying any issues in these areas at the moment, it could be a problem in the future if not rectified now. I’m working on a protocol to remove these heavy metals from his body and correct the mineral imbalances. There are many things I do to minimise our heavy metal load, so I was baffled as to the source of these. Water is a major source of many heavy metals so I decided to test our water source (see pic). We clearly have some heavy metals in there. Our Pura Tap which we replace frequently was doing nothing, nada, zip to filter out these metals (along with other things not being tested here). Thank goodness for the Zazen that we have been using for 9 months now. The green colour in the test tube is what we are using to identify the heavy metals and as you can see after Zazen filtration there are none! I think Sunny probably was still getting exposure through bath water etc but at least I know he is no longer drinking these heavy metals. It just so happened that we were having some plumbing issues at the time and Bayden dug up our piping which was old galvanised pipe that had corroded so much they were almost closed over (See pic). When galvanised pipes corrode like this,, the zinc coating often used releases all sorts of heavy metals including cadmium, lead, copper and aluminium. We have since changed our mains piping and have already seen a huge improvement in the water test findings. Zazen currently have some end of financial year specials on so if you are thinking about improving the quality of the water you drink, now is the time! I’m technically on maternity leave with only 3 weeks till babies due date so please reach out now. Touch base and let me know if you are interested in some more information. I’m also happy to test your drinking water for free if you bring me a water sample.

22.01.2022 Vegan meatballs Oh my gosh this dish was sooo delish. I’m not one to pull out the food processor for dinners as I like to cook quick but it was worth it and not that much hassle at all. Ingredients (for the meatballs)... 1/2 cup walnuts 2 tablespoons sundried tomato Handful of fresh parsley 2 garlic cloves 2 mushrooms Pinch of oregano 1.5 cups cooked quinoa (I used tri-colour) 2 tablespoons rice flower 1/2 cup brown lentils Pasta sauce 1 tablespoon oliv oil Half an onion 1 garlic clove 1 tin of tomatoes Olives Bunch of basil Pepper Process - Preheat oven to 180c - Place walnuts, garlic, parsley, sundried tomatoes, oregano and mushrooms in a food processor and blend till combined well. - Add the quinoa, lentils and rice flour for a quick pulse so all the in gradients are combined - Roll the mixture into your preferred size meatball and place on a tray and in the oven for 20 minutes (or until cooked) - For the tomato sauce, heat the oil in a pan and fry off the onion and garlic - Add olives, tomato and some pepper and continue to stir. - Throw in a handful of fresh chopped basil toward the end. For the pasta a I used a mix of gluten free spaghetti and zucchini shredded on a mandolin that I added to the pasta pot and the last minute then drain. Serve up and top with some more fresh basil, parsley and vegan Parmesan. Do you have my vegan Parmesan recipe? It’s the absolute best and Sunny loves it on his dinner. 21.01.2022 A week exclusively dedicated to mothers who breastfeed. An event created to shame non-breastfeeding mums or "rub it in their face". I wouldn't even say it's to celebrate mothers who do breastfeed. But the week does draw attention to the benefits and challenges of breastfeeding. Should women who have experienced those challenges (or not) and breastfed for however long (1 week or 4 years) not feel proud when reflecting on these things during... this time? Social media allows us to express more freely than ever before, and judge more harshly than ever before... come on people, let's stop shaming each other! I'm not a huge fan of the labels "breast is best" or "fed is best" but I liked a comment I read this week that was "mumma knows best". The important thing here though is that "mumma" and her support network have access to information and support so that they can make an educated decision and succeed with whatever they choose. A global campaign to raise awareness and prompt action (more so from governments) to ensure that women receive the right support if breastfeeding is the best option for them. WHO and UNICEF are calling on governments to protect and promote women’s access to skilled breastfeeding counselling, a critical component of breastfeeding support. Each year there is a different theme because infant feeding is diverse and complex. This years theme is . WBW 2020 is a valuable opportunity to raise awareness among decision-makers and the wider community of the contribution breastfeeding makes to population health, food security, environmental sustainability, and the need to invest. WBW is organised by World Alliance For Breastfeeding Action. Take a look at their site to learn more. www.waba.org.my/wbw Photo by Eibner Saliba

21.01.2022 Birth Time Documentary - Victor Harbor Screening Rebecca Martin (Naturopath and Doula) and myself will be hosting a screening of the documentary, Birth Time, in Victor Harbor on May the 12th. What is Birth Time?... Three women embark on a mission to find out why an increasing number of women are emerging from their births physically and emotionally traumatised. Their discoveries expose the truth and lead them to join the birth revolution and forge a movement that hopes to change the face of maternity care in Australia and across the developed world. We are hoping to have a few awesome extras available for you on the night , including the option of pre-ordering a nourishing meal option to enjoy during the film from the lovely Sarah from Real Food Life. 21.01.2022 A few people asked for the gummie recipe so here it is I recently purchased silicone moulds from eBay to make healthy gummie lollies for Sunny. Thanks for the idea from @culturedbaby They are super fun and he loves getting a snake or gummie bear as a treat. The recipe requires 1 cup of liquid and 3 tablespoons of gelatin. I used @nutraorganics gelatin. A lot of other recipes say to use 4 tablespoons but I find this makes them a bit chewy. For this batch I made; 1/2 cup of ...mango 1/2 cup of orange juice 1 teaspoon honey 8 drops of liquid stevia 3 tablespoons gelatin Blend all of the ingredients excluding the gelatin and measure out into a pan using a cup to ensure ratio is right (1 cup to 3 tablespoons). Sprinkle 3 tablespoons of gelatin over the liquid mix and slow to sit for 5 minutes (this leads to blooming and I have no idea of the significance but think it might prevent the gelatin clumping together). Then heat the mixture and simmer for 5 mins stirring as it goes. Turn of an allow to cool a little before transferring to silicon moulds an into the fridge. Tip. The moulds aren’t stiff so make sure you have them on a plate or similar before pouring and transferring to fridge otherwise the mixture will go everywhere. If you are looking for a plant based option consider looking into replacing gelatin with agar agar (a Japanese seaweed that has similar action). #homemadelollies #gelatingummies #guthealth #nutraorganics #thefleurieunaturopath #adelaidenaturopath #refinedsugarfree

21.01.2022 It’s world breastfeeding week and I have so much I’d like to share on this topic. I didn’t know much about breastfeeding before I had Sunny, I just new that I wanted to do it. I’d like to share my story with you in the hope it might help other Mums or Mums to be out there, because I thought breastfeeding would be easy, and it wasn’t. It’s hard work, but so too can many aspects of being a mother, and with what I have learnt since my experience, it really is something worth wor...Continue reading

20.01.2022 And on that note, I’m going to be logging off for a few weeks. I have lots of clients I am supporting at the moment who need my full attention and a little mini camping trip to celebrate this little guy turning 2! I’ll be back in late September. Clients and enquirers, please contact me via email.

20.01.2022 It’s been a... year. Hug a tree, it will make you feel better. I often prescribe clients lifestyle interventions that include getting out in nature. This is a simple, free treatment that can have more profound impact than you might imagine. It would be pretty hard to deny that as a society we have become more disconnected. From each other, for ourselves and from nature, our natural world that we would not exist without. It is part of our biology to have a connection with n...ature. Being in nature can help to reduce feelings of anger, fear, and stress and support happy emotions. Exposure to nature not only makes you feel better emotionally, it contributes to your physical wellbeing, reducing blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and the production of stress hormones. So after a year of too much isolation and at times even deprivation of something we all too often take for granted (free open air), get outside, go for a walk with a friend, breath in the fresh air and really notice your natural environments. They are beautiful beyond imagination, how they grow despite everything going on in this world. So clam.

18.01.2022 SUMMER CLEANSE (Post 3 of 3) Ok, a quick note on cleanses and detox programs, especially important at this time of year. Its something that I learnt through experience, but that big blow out that we sometimes do before starting a health kick... is sooo detrimental to our overall health and success with cleansing. We act as we'll never eat those foods again, and we go bananas! It sends our blood sugar balance into chaos, our liver struggles more, our cravings are abated but t...hen when we start our cleanse, they are all 10 fold. The sugar withdrawals are more intense, the detoxification symptoms more evident, and we all too soon give up. Im not a big fan of saying "new year, health kick", and so I don't want this Summer Cleanse to be used as a new years resolution. It just happens to be a time in the year where we might be holiday, its warmer, the fresh fruits and vegetables are abundant... so it just works. I wrote a post on this a few years back, take a read as it sums up the point I'm trying to make here.. and it's very important for getting the best out of your cleanse and ongoing success with your health goals. http://www.thefleurieunaturopath.com.au/new-year-new-you/

17.01.2022 Another delicious recipe from Molly. Chocolate, peanut butter granola. Sooo much better than the sugar laden cereals at the supermarket. Did you know that a study showed that consumption of 100g of refined sugar can disable the immune system by approximately 75% for at least 6 hours! Keep that in mind when you are preparing your kids breakie and sending them off to school to mingle with other children this coming flu season. Ingredients: ... - 2 cups oats - 6 dates chopped in small pieces - 1 Tbsp cacao powder - 1/2 cup nuts (Almonds, Brazil nuts, walnuts, hazelnuts) - 1/2 cup shredded coconut - 1 tsp cinnamon - 1 tsp vanilla - 2 Tbsp peanut butter - 1 Tbsp real butter or coconut oil - 1 tsp honey Method: 1. Put the oats, dates, cacao, nuts, coconut and cinnamon in a bowl and mix to combine. 2. Over low heat put melt the peanut butter, butter, vanilla and honey until melted. 3. Pour over the dry ingredients and mix together until well incorporated. 4. Spread out onto a lined baking tray and kind of squish it together so it is one giant thin cookie (when it cooks it makes like clusters of the granola). 5. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until just golden. 6. Allow to cool completely and enjoy. 7. You can have it on top of yogurt and fruit, have a bowl of it with milk or just eat it as a snack. #norefinedsugar #kidsnutrition #immunesupport #winterwellness #naturalhealth #wholefoods #realfood #refinedsugarfree

15.01.2022 SUMMER CLEANSE! (Post 1 of 3) Overdone it a bit over the festive season? Waking up with a bit of a groggy head today... that's probably your liver saying.. HELP! There is a bit of controversy around detoxification and cleansing, but I feel like its biggest critics are probably those that cannot commit. Yes, sometimes it involves a big shift in someone's diet and lifestyle which can be challenging, and no, we may not always see changes in biochemical markers to give us scienti...fic proof of what is taking place, but anybody who has successfully completed a cleanse in the past can not deny the feeling of improved wellbeing. And when done regularly, the accumulative effects overtime on our health and wellbeing can be profound. So, I've decided to offer a simple, naturopathic detox program, guided by me, to kick-start your return to optimal health and well-being. Interested? Check out my next post for all of the details.

10.01.2022 (Post 1 of 2) Sorry a little late with the rest of my story but you know #mumlife The next challenge we had with breastfeeding was that Sunny was not interested in eating! He would latch, but he wouldn’t drink. You might remember from my previous post that the suckling effect helps to bring the milk in. So even though that around day 3, when I came home from the hospital, I felt my milk came in (and the baby blues) within 48hrs it just seemed to disappear. To cut a long st...ory short, when the midwife visited on day 5 and I was referred to a lactation consultant, advised to feed Sunny every 3 hours, and top up each feed with expressed breast milk. So Bayden raced off to buy a breast pump and I settled into a new routine of feed, top up (via finger feed), pump, repeat, something I recently learnt was called triple feeding. We chose to finger feed instead of using a bottle to minimise the risk of nipple confusion and further impacting on Sunny’s latch. The Dr also recommend I start a medication to try and entice my milk back in, something I felt uncomfortable about, especially after more medication during birth than I had wanted, but it was intended for short term and I new that fast action was required plus I already had an armoury of naturopathic intervention that I could start to use and slowly wean of the medication. All of this really sent my post partum anxiety through the roof, in my mind, I thought Sunny was going to starve to death. I was lucky that my Aunty, a CaFHS nurse and midwife, came to visit and helped me to understand that Sunny was getting more milk than I thought. She also gave me a DVD to watch which helped me to understand feeding cues, proper latch, the different feeding positions, etc. I was also seeing the lactation consultant regularly and that really helped.(continued in next post)

09.01.2022 (Post 2 of 2) Things started to progress and Sunny started getting better at feeds and I started pumping more milk. It was still quite a challenge sticking to the 3 hourly feeds as Sunny would take a long time to wake up for a feed and would keep falling back a sleep. Then once awake and fed he would sometimes take another 30 minutes to get back to sleep, then I’d have to pump for 30 minutes, the whole process lasting at least 2 hours. So I had an hour to have a rest before s...tarting again. This went on for over a month. During this time I also developed an infection in my stitches and so that hour of rest between feeds was spent sitting in a sitz bath! When Sunny was around 3 weeks old, our lactation consultant noticed a lump in Sunny’s neck. We referred to WCH, which was an experience in itself that left me in tears. He was diagnosed with a sternocleidomastoid tumour which was a benign mass likely caused by trauma during birth (sunny came out via ventouse with his neck slightly twisted to the side). We were given a series of stretching exercises to help prevent complications of torticollis. Another thing to fit in that rest time! But here we are, 23 months and still feeding. Even though breastfeeding is fully established, Somedays I can still find it hard. But it’s also amazing that he can be soothed any time anywhere and that he is still benefiting from the immune protection that breastmilk offers. Many people think a child doesn’t need breastmilk once solids are introduced but it offers sooo much more than just nutrition and shaping the microbiome and pathogen protection is potentially the primary and original functions of breastmilk. It is not only the baby that benefits from breastfeeding either. When we breastfeed, the feel good hormone oxytocin is released for both the mother and baby. Breastfeeding has also shown to reduce the mothers risk of hormone related cancer, osteoporosis, heart disease, diabetes and hypertension. Breastfeeding is beautiful and challenging, intimate but also benefits from the support of friends, family and professionals. I hope to learn and share more about breastfeeding because I wish I’d known more before I had Sunny.

09.01.2022 Are you worried about the quality of the water you and your family drink? I was and that's when I started to do some research into what actually is in our drinking water. Our drinking water can contain rust, sediment, asbestos, chlorine, micro plastics, herbicides, pesticides, mould and mould spores, parasites and bacteria. As somebody who knows the importance of getting 2 Litres of water a day, I realised that's a lot of something that might not be as pure as I thought go...ing in to my body. We were already using another under sink water filter, but it didn't quite have the guarantee I was after and it didn't filter out fluoride, a sometimes contentious topic that really does deserve its own post so I'll come back to that another day. Thats when I came across the Zazen Alkaline Water Filter System. A bench top system that revitalises your tap water, transforming it into mineral water that not only tastes good but is nutrient rich. The system ticked all the boxes for me Filters out THMs harmful chemicals produced when water is chlorinated Filters poisonous heavy metals and other bacteria Removes rust, sediment, asbestos, herbicides, pesticides, mould and mould spores. Reduces fluoride content by up to 90% Is free of BPA and phthalates, and comes with a glass bottom tank option Remineralises the water with a balanced range of ionized Minerals and Electrolytes Hydrates the body at the cellular level It's so important to have a water filter that not only removes increasing harmful water contaminants such as carcinogenic compounds, but also replaces the minerals we need. The Zazen Alkaline Water system does this through a 10 stage process of filtration and remineralisation. I was absolutely shocked to see the first stage ceramic filter turning from a bright white to a dark orange/brown colour within a few months, even when we were filling the tank with water already filtered from our under bench system. I realised we had been drinking this sediment for the last 4 years! I've loved our Zazen so much that I've decided to make them available to my clients and community. I have a Christmas special available!Contact me for more info.
