20.01.2022 For our many horsey friends I just have to share our amazing new slow hay feeders. This is probably the best thing we have put in our new barn! You can buy th...e kit and put it together or just buy the netting and make your own. You can make them smaller if you like. Check out Brian's website diynets.net!! He also has a Facebook page that I think is DIY Slow Feed Hay Feeders. Brian is amazing to work with. I am making the post public so you can share. See more

17.01.2022 I discovered an amazing thing the other day. Firstly, that girths that have buckles which do themselves up exist!! Secondly, its possible to make any girth int...o a self-locating girth with just a few plaiting bands :D I've found this extremely handy on Larry, especially since we have a monoflap saddle. To do my girth up now I just need to pull the strap and the buckle finds the hole itself Its like magic 1. Loop a plaiting band over the post/prong bit (I used two for added 'ping!' 2. Pass it through the buckle 3. Twist the bands and pass back through 4. Loop over the post again 5. Voila See pictures below to see how to do it :D

11.01.2022 How to remove mold from saddles and bridles First deprive the mold from its food source Clean the leather thoroughly using saddle soap, make sure to remove a...ll mold, dirt and dust, then rinse the leather with very warm water (as long as your hands can stand the temperature, so does the leather, if the water is too hot for your hands, it will be too hot for the leather too!) Acid is the best mold killer, hence vinegar is suitable (if you hate the smell, then lemon will do for dark leathers, it can leave marks on lighter colored leathers though!). Because the leather is still wet and pores are open due to being treated with hot water before, the acid will get deep into the material sponge it all over the leather and again make sure to cover the corners and folds. The leather now needs to dry through and through, so best store in a well ventilated, shady (and not too cold) place. Give it time, mold needs moisture to thrive, so deprive it of it. Having used the soap and acid, you have now removed the protective layer of fats from the leather, so once dried, generously apply good saddle dressing (maybe with beeswax for extra protection). Clean the leather of any excess dressing after a few minutes fat sitting on top of the leather will catch dirt and dust hence provide footing for new mold! To keep the mold away from the leathers, make sure to keep them clean (most of the time the mould first settles on the dirt before attacking the leather). Store in a dry, well ventilated room far away from wet saddle blankets! Storing the saddle in a good cotton saddle bag (or simply using cheap second hand flannelette sheets to wrap them in ) is a good idea www.sonovetequinetherapy.com.au

08.01.2022 Equine Health and Performance Centre DE-WORMING PROTOCOLS FAECAL EGG COUNTS (FEC) - Also known as ‘Worm Egg Counts’... - You can come into the EHPC and collect and faecal egg count kit for free - Otherwise drop off a sample of fresh manure to reception - A member of staff will be in contact with your faecal egg count results, normally within 24 hours. - As of the 09/11/2020, the price is currently $29, however this is subject to change so please confirm with the clinic at the time of dropping the sample off. FOALS - Recommend treating with fenbendazole (Panacur) at 2 3 months and again at 4-5 months of age o Keep confined for 24 48 hours and monitor manures for appearance of ascarids. Figure 1 Mature ascarid in faeces from a foal o FEC recommended so faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) can be performed to ensure efficacy of de-worming product used FECRT performed 2 weeks after de-worming product was given If Ascarid eggs (Parascaris spp) are still present after fenbendazole deworming, then a pyrantel containing product should be used. - Faecal egg count at 7-8 months of age to target required de-wormer o If ascarids consider pyrantel or fenbendazole with FECRT o If strongyles - consider ivermectin (or moxidectin depending on timing of year) - Moxidectin should be given in autumn or winter time when foals are at least 4 months of age. YOUNG STOCK - Immunity to worms is not fully developed until 5 or 6 years of age - Recommend at least 3 monthly FEC to assess worm burden - If >200-250 epg, then recommend de-worming with ivermectin unless autumn/winter time o Also recommend performing FECRT 2 weeks after de-worming product was administered. - Recommend routine de-worming with moxidectin (Equest + tape) in autumn time o Also, possibly in spring if pasture overstocked, if manure clearance has not been performed or if very mild winter - Recommend routine deworming with praziquantel & ivermectin in spring to target tapeworms ADULT HORSES - Faecal egg counts should be performed every 3 months, but at least twice per year. - Recommend moxidectin in autumn/winter period - De-worm according to FEC results - If >200 250 epg recommend de-worming - If you have a natural water source on your property: recommend routine deworming with praziquantel & ivermectin (Razor) in spring to target tapeworms AGED HORSES - Horses >15 years of age or those who have PPID (Cushing’s) should have FEC performed every 3 months - Immunity to worms may be lower than in horses aged 6 15 years - De-worm according to results - Moxidectin given in autumn/winter period outside of last de-worming products effective stage (normally >3 months of de-worming). GENERAL PASTURE/PADDOCK MANAGEMENT - Removing manure from the paddocks at least twice per week - Rotationally grazing, either resting paddocks entirely for at least 1 2 months - Can rotate paddock grazing with ruminants to reduce egg/larval burdens on pasture - Do not wean foals into the same paddock every year.
06.01.2022 another one for today? :-) Hope you like it, please share with friends. It is a great exercise whether you are a show jumper or not, with Cavaletti or very low j...umps this is suitable and a great training for dressage horses, show horses etc as well and they might enjoy doing something different from the routine. This course starts with longer lines between the cavaletti or jumps with the circles becoming tighter towards the last ones. Start slow and focus on keeping the same rhythm throughout the course, count if it helps you to notice changes in rhythm, be soft and look for bending the whole horse, not just pulling the head into the direction of the next jump. Collection will come naturally as the circles become tighter if you and your horse don't fight. I would suggest to start with Cavaletti or low jumps in trot and only when this works perfectly, start doing the exercise in canter and with higher jumps.
05.01.2022 DO YOU KNOW WHAT CLASS YOU'RE ACTUALLY ENTERING? (**educational post**) With a few state shows coming up, i thought it might be helpful to provide this passage ...from our Pintos SA Judging handbook. It is targeted towards Open breed shows, but the outline of the class descriptions is applicable for all societies. I have had many competitors come to me, questioning why their horse (or they themselves) didn't win, and after discussion it has become clear they aren't sure of the judging criteria for the category they were entered in. SO, here you go! its always helpful to know what the judge should be looking for in your class :) 1. Judging of Breed or conformation (Led) events: a. Breed or conformation (Led) events are to be judged on the merit of the animals conformation, presence, soundness and action. Height and actual breed of the animal are to be ignored excepting in direct relation to the above criteria. b. Blemishes such as scars and hair missing from the coat, mane, or tail due to accidental causes are to be ignored unless such blemishes are direct evidence of conformation or action defects. 2. Presentation events: a. Best Presented Horse & Handler events are to be judged on the following basis: 1/3 points for presentation of the horse 1/3 of points for dress of the handler 1/3 of points on proficiency of the handler in presenting the horse and themselves to the judge. b. Smartest on parade horse events are to be judged on the following basis: 80% of points for preparation of the horse 10% of points for preparation of the tack 10% of points for dress of the rider 3. Handler Events: Handler events are to be judged on the showmanship and proficiency of the handler only. 4. Ridden Events a. Ridden events are to be judged on the animals suitability as a ridden horse, being the ability of the entry to correctly perform the prescribed workout with due consideration to manners, balance, responsiveness and paces. b. English pleasure is to be judged on the following basis: 30% points on conformation 70% points on performance. Performance is to be assessed on the basis of the animal most pleasant to ride ie. Good balance, responsiveness and manners resulting in kind, easy paces. c. Western pleasure is to be judged on the following basis: 60% of points on performance and manners 30% of points on conformation and substance 10% of points on presentation The performance should indicate a well balanced, tractable animal with good manners that is a pleasure to ride. d. Hack classes are to be judged on the following basis; 30% of points on conformation 70% of points on manners and paces in performing the workout prescribed by the judge. This is based solely the HORSES performance and not the rider. e. Rider classes are to be judged on the following basis; 50% of points on technical ability of the rider 50% of points on presentation and correctly carrying out the workout prescribed by the judge. This is based solely the RIDERS performance, and not the horses.
