21.01.2022 The Cinva Ram revolution!!!! (But was it?) Images of the mechanical mudbrick press machine. This unit was shipped down from Northern NSW after being found on eBay in a clearing sale. It was Manufactured in New Zealand and designed in New York USA. It produces smaller mudbricks than the traditional Australian mudbricks, about half size. A Cinva Ram has many advantages but also disadvantages. The clay/ soil mix is drier than the turkey nest mudbricks. The upper bricks in th...e images are produced from the golden Eltham clay that made Nillumbik famous for stunning mud bricks. Soil from a trench was used with little mixing and no added water. Producing dense, solid mud bricks ready to lay into a wall with in hours. The Cinva Ram is temperamental with regard to soil moisture, any Foreign materials in the soil, and type of soil being used. The advantages is a fast, single man operation, a neat mud brick operation. Creating mud bricks from site to wall within days. FYI - a little bit of heritage: the mud bricks in the lower of the stack are from JohnO of Mud-larks made in the 1990’s, laid in a muddy on Kerri Cresant in the 1990’s. Then during a renovation in 2020 salvaged and shipped down to Diamond Street to be reused. Who would of thought Mudbricks were so amazing - out preforming any other building products for 60 000 years. ( my claim ) Black and white images are from The famous EBS Bulletin, Earth wall construction, third edition 1982.
14.01.2022 Good News: Nillumbik Shire Council have committed support to continue the artist in residence on laughing waters. This will see the continued to use and preservation of these amazing mud brick buildings. Unfortunately the serpent house maybe beyond repair.
14.01.2022 Tuesday Trivia: Who Am I? One for the Mudbrick buffs among us. 1. I started my career as a bank clerk 2. After WWII, I became a designer, builder & landscape ar...chitect 3. I used recycled materials & in a touch of irony a recycled rubbish dump converted into a park bears my name. 4. Some consider me to be a pioneer of modern mudbrick building 5. I designed more than 1000 houses throughout Nillumbik as well as other parts of Australia. I am ..... ? Nillumbik has a rich history of mudbrick buildings & I support the work of the Nillumbik Mudbrick Association. These buildings have a local charm & an eco advantage as we look towards a greener building future. https://www.mudbrick.org.au/I
12.01.2022 Such a lovely note from Brendan Wild at Wild Homes - thank you so much! #theownerbuilder 'Just having a clean up and made a stack of all my TOB mags that goes f...rom no.10 to present with only a few missing. We realised what a big influence TOB has had on our ideas of building homes and out of different materials and even on what homes mean to the occupants. So big shout out to TOB for inspiring us and others! Keep up the great work!! Cheers Brendan' http://www.wildhomes.com.au See more
08.01.2022 ISBN 0644 02086 5 Commonwealth of Australia 1982 EBS Bulletin #5 Earth-wall construction. Third edition. ... It may look boring but it’s nothing less than a milestone in the documentation of earth wall buildings. Published by the Australian Government, and written by the late G. F. Middleton. This publication is a very serious attempt to write a standard of earth wall construction in Australia. It has also become a very important historical document of early buildings of colonised Australia. First published in 1952, it under went five editions until the end of the government run Experimental Building Station in NSW (it seems to have ended around the early 1980’s) A small and concise book that covers all types of earth walls, with images of early building examples. You will find that it is still being used as a reference in newer publications. A fantastic book to hunt for.
