25.01.2022 {{ Food as Medicine ~ Parsley }} Although Parsley is really commonplace, it has been used as a medicine in Europe since the time of Galen and Hippocrates. There is so much to write about Parsley - it may just be our herb of the week some time! Parsley is a wonderful anti-inflammatory and broad detoxifying agent. It is also a diuretic, meaning it helps the movement of water out of the body via the kidneys. Parsley is in fact a very useful herb for treating edema aka fluid re...tention. The master herbalist Culpeper in fact said that parsley is the herb par excellence for the kidneys and bladder, and is a reliable general remedy for bladder infections. It is also very well known for prostate swelling, and should be in the diet of every male above the age of 50! In addition to that, it has a subtle, yet effective ability to temper activity in the digestive tract, making it great for heartburn and indigestion. Parsley root is also a traditional remedy for fatigue and adrenal exhaustion! It nourishes the blood, and is an overlooked women’s remedy, where it has been used to treat oestrogen deficiency disorders including menopause, PMS and amenorrhea. Hands up if you love parsley!

In the diffuser may affect some children in this way. Diffuser Blend recommendations: 3 drops each of Grapefruit, Mandarin and Sandalwood 3 drops each of Rosemary, Basil and Lemon (day time blend) 3 drops each of Orange, Juniper and Lavender NB: If you would like a consultation I do free mini ones in the Apothecary on a Saturday afternoon or you can book in a full consult by emailing me at [email protected]

19.01.2022 {{ Food as Medicine ~ Black Pepper }} Black Pepper is commonly known as a medicinal food, yet I don’t think we really appreciate the breadth and depth of this medicine here in the West! In Asian medicine, black pepper is considered THE foremost blood cleansing and detoxifying remedy - it digs deeply into your cells and helps your body get rid of accumulated waste material.... Black pepper is an oily remedy, which makes a wonderful digestive remedy. Naturally, it is heating, which helps to stoke the digestive fire, or ‘Agni’ as it is called in Ayurveda. It helps to bring blood to the digestive tract, and aids in the secretion of digestive juices to enhance absorption. In fact, adding black pepper to other digestive spices can enhance their absorption dramatically (we know this well with turmeric!) Black pepper is also a potent antioxidant because of a constituent called piperine. In Ayurveda, it is a tradition cold and flu remedy when combined with honey - it helps to loosen and expel stubborn mucous. Black pepper also has antiseptic properties! AND here is a most interesting fact - scientific research has shown common black pepper (Piper nigram) to have 7 - 19% (E)--Caryophyllene in it, which is a food based cannabinoid aka CBD! What do you think - will you be adding extra pepper to your meals from now on?
13.01.2022 >>>> Herb of the Week <<<< { Marshmallow - Althaea officialis } Ah, sweet Marshmallow - the universal soothing balm to both psyche and soma. Although many people think Marshmallow as a simple gut demulcent, this stalwart of herbal medicine has a lot to offer if we care to take a deeper look.... Marshmallow is such a powerful remedy it has its place in traditional medicine across ancient Greek, Arabian and Indian medicine. Energetically, Marshmallow has a sweet or bland taste. Its sweet-blandness attests to its nourishing and tonifying properties. This taste does not elicit a strong action from the body, which testifies to Marshmallow’s gentle and nurturing action. Marshmallow’s mission is simply to make you feel comfortable. Let’s start with Marshmallow’s most famous action - as a demulcent. A demulcent is any herbs that soothes irritated tissue. The main site in the body that it does this is in the gut, which makes it the go-to remedy in cases of inflammation in the stomach or intestines due to food allergies, poisons, or conditions like ulcerative colitis or peptic ulcers. It is also excellent for leaky gut, because it helps to seal the ‘tight junctions’ that form a protective membrane in the gastrointestinal tract. On the skin, Marshmallow has much the same effect, relieving irritated and dry skin conditions with its soothing and nourishing nature. Broadly however, Marshmallow is a systemic inflammation modulator. This being because a lot of inflammation begins in the gut. On a deeper level however, Marshmallow is a balm and buffer for the psyche, and it systemically opposes the heat and excitation activity that presents itself in the body as a response to stress. This makes Marshmallow a wonderful, and often overlooked, tonic for living in the 21st century! Because Marshmallow is a water remedy (cooling, soothing and slimy!), it has an affinity for the waters of our body, which are processed through the kidneys and bladder. This makes Marshmallow an effective diuretic (aka increases urinary output), especially in the way it is able to move stagnant water aka fluid retention. And finally, Marshmallow definitely has an effect on hot, dry and inflamed lungs (think dry, hacking coughs), and is great for respiratory infection where stagnant phlegm needs to be loosened and expelled. Sweet Marshmallow is the embodiment of softness and flow. Whether one has hard and stagnant swellings, dry irritated inflammations or there is a psychological ‘hardness’ and tension, Marshmallow is there to soothe, and simply tell you everything is going to be OK. A very special plant indeed, and well needed in these times. Nimbin Apothecary sells Marshmallow root, tincture and glycetract. Contact us if you are in need of some softening and soothing!
11.01.2022 http:// DIAPHORETIC \\ Diaphoretics are a REALLY cool class of herbal actions that were well utilised in the early 19th Century They are a great way to learn about the fundamental principles of herbal medicine, because their action is all about supporting the body’s vital process, rather than suppressing it... This is because diaphoretics are specifically used to support a very particular process - a fever A fever is a kind of a heat-producing, inflammatory response by the body to burn off an infection. It is designed to make the internal environment too hot for the invading pathogen to survive. The body is super intelligent! When it recognises an invading pathogen, it closes off the pores and ramps up the activity of the immune system. This causes our temperature to rise. Over the counter medicines suppress a fever, which make us feel better in the short term, but prolong the sickness because the invading pathogen is allowed to survive. Enter the magic of diaphoretics! The definition of a diaphoretic is a substance that assists the body to sweat. It does this by opening the pores so that the heat of the fever can move to the surface to be expelled, thereby cooling down the body. It’s really quite amazing! There are two kinds of diaphoretics - stimulant and relaxing diaphoretics. Stimulant diaphoretics are best used in the beginning stages of a fever. They circulate blood from the core out to the skin, which causes the body to open its pores and induce a sweat to relieve excess heat. Plants in this category include Black pepper, Cayenne, Ginger, Thyme and Garlic Relaxant diaphoretics are better for the late stage of a fever. They ease the tension and constriction so that blood can flow (remember how tense you can get during a fever?!), and the pores relax so that heat can be expelled through a sweat. Plants in this category include Elderflower, Lemon balm, Peppermint, Boneset and Catnip Diaphoretics are a really interesting herbal action to learn about. They teach us to support the vital force instead of suppress it! #diaphoretic #herbalactions #medicinalherbs #herbalmedicine #herbaleducation #naturalmedicine #folkmedicine #apothecary

09.01.2022 H E R B A L - M O N O G R A P H { Kelp ~ Laminaria spp } Taste // Salty... Temperature // Cool Effective Qualities // Moist . Kelp is an original superfood and wonder-medicine that is a little underrated in our opinion! It has so many benefits, which can be summed up in its ability to provide deep nourishment and restoration to a depleted system. Its salty taste means it is loaded with minerals. The modern Western diet has moved away from the consumption of sea vegetables, which is unfortunate - because Kelp is abundant with minerals and trace elements that have a broad, regulatory action on our entire metabolism. In fact, Kelp is an important remedy for any conditions of chronic toxicosis, particularly heavy metals. Kelp is a unique remedy in the way it contains amounts of iodine like no other plant on Earth (or sea!). Iodine has been described as that which ignites and maintains the flame of life itself. It’s what kindles our innate fire, it is the spark of our metabolism. This is why some form of Kelp is frequently prescribed in hypothyroid conditions. In fact, this is Kelp’s central use - as a harmoniser and regulator of the endocrine system, of which the thyroid is a key player! Along with nourishment, detoxifcation and endocrine regulation, Kelp also clears inflammation, removes fluid congestion and stimulates digestion - especially if there is dryness in the intestines. Kelp is a great example of food ad medicine, although it can be taken in powder, capsule or tincture form. Jump on the Kelp train! You won’t regret it - it’s a fabulous remedy to maintain health and vitality. #kelp #seaweed #medicinalplants #naturalmedicine #iodine #thyroidhealth #energetics #plants #apothecary #nimbin

06.01.2022 From the Shop // Immunity & Resilience Herbal Extract . Immunity is not all about Vitamin C and Echinacea ya know!... In fact, the immune system is HIGHLY dependant on other, fundamental systems for it to function at its optimum. One such system is our endocrine system, in particular, our adrenals - which govern our stress response. When we are in fight or flight, all our energy goes towards ‘surviving’. Our blood vessels dilate so that blood can get to our extremities, our pupils dilate and our heart rate increases. The body prioritises survival over digestion, reproduction and, you guessed it, immunity! That is why we developed a special herbal formula that works on the intersection between stress and immunity. It’s an integrated formula that not only includes classic ‘immune herbs’, but nourishes the adrenals, the nervous system and the digestion ~ all things that are essential to a robust immune response! Here’s what’s inside: ~ Astragalus :: Traditional TCM remedy that generates Qi and bolsters immunity, particularly gut-based immunity ~ Ashwaganda :: Ayurvedic master tonic that regulates cortisol, boosts immunity, promotes sleep and tempers stress ~ Elecampane :: A traditional western adaptogen that nourishes the adrenals, aids digestion and assimilation and dispels phlegm ~ Olive Leaf :: Classic immune remedy that also supports the liver and cardiovascular system ~ Rhodiola :: The master resilience plant that modulates the stress response and ‘enters the spleen’ in TCM - meaning it supports digestion, assimilation and immunity ~ Tulsi :: Sacred Ayurvedic master tonic that supports body, mind and spirit. Calms the nerves, stimulates digestion and boosts immunity This is the kind of tonic that you can take every day through the colder months to avoid getting sick. Since it is such a broad, yet deep acting formula, it’s benefits reach far beyond immunity ~ its supportive for your entire being! It’s available in four sizes. Grab yours from our online shop before the chills really set in > https://nimbinapothecary.com.au//immunity-resilience-herba #herbalextract

04.01.2022 H E R B A L ~ M O N O G R A P H { American Ginseng ~ Panax quinquefolius } Taste // Sweet & slightly bitter... Temperature // Cool Effective Qualities // Restoring, relaxing & Nourishing . If there was a single tonic that could be recommended to combat the stress of living in the 21st Century, American ginseng just might be it! Although not as popular as some of our other adaptogens such as Reishi or Ashwaganda, American ginseng’s deep restoring and nourishing qualities mean it is definitely culturally indicated Let’s begin with its taste. We know American ginseng is a tonic because it is predominantly sweet, and we all need a little sweetness in our life! At its core, American ginseng is an adrenocortical restorative, adaptogen and supreme Qi tonic. This is because the plant restores our adrenals, our gut and our liver. The holy trifecta of stress, digestion and metabolism is thus wholly supported and nourished by American ginseng and its ability to tonify and regulate these fundamental functions. Another wonderful feature of this plant is its neuroendocrine restorative effect - making it perfect for conditions such as chronic depression, memory loss and insomnia Whilst our other ginsengs are primarily stimulating, the moist aspect of American ginseng also classifies it as a Yin tonic - it restores our deep waters. It has a particular affinity for restoring the waters of the lungs, and is a go-to remedy for a dry, irritated cough. American ginseng is a special plant, one that has perhaps, and regrettably, been forgotten when we think of our most powerful adaptogens. Contact us if you feel like this plant is right for you! #americanginseng #herbs #herbalist #traditionalmedicine #herbalenergetics #apothecary #nimbinapothecary

02.01.2022 >>>> Herb of the Week <<<< {Olive Leaf ~ Oela europea} Olive is an original superfood! Since ancient times, olive, as both food and medicine, has been revered as one of Nature’s finest tonics for health preservation and vitality. ... Olive oil was used extensively throughout traditional Europe, both internally and externally to nourish, lubricate and soften. It was particularly used topically where there was generalised swelling or oedema to encourage the movement of fluids. Energetically, Olive leaf, which is what is largely used in modern herbal medicine, is bitter and astringent. Astringent means that it has the ability to tone and tighten overly laced tissue. Traditional medicine would say Olive leaf is mildly cooling and draining, which is great where there is excess heat, infection or inflammation. In terms of its affinities, Olive leaf favours the cardiovascular system, the liver and gallbladder, spleen and pancreas. Of course, most of us know Olive Leaf as the classic immune system remedy - which is affirmed by its significant antiviral, antibiotic, anti fungal and anti parasitic properties. What has been forgotten about Olive, however, is that it is a primary cardiovascular remedy. Phytochemically, Olive leaf contains Oleuropein - one of the most powerful antioxidants known. This makes it protective against inflammation and oxidation, especially in the heart and blood vessels. It is also a vasodilator which helps improve blood flow. It is specifically useful for high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Olive leaf is also useful in states where the body is chronically inflamed, once again because of its high antioxidant content. In addition, it is useful in cases of insulin resistance because it helps to lower blood sugar - making it a specific remedy for those with metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. And finally, this wonder plant’s bitter compounds help both the liver and gallbladder to generate and release bile, aiding in digestion (its a mild laxative suited to those who tend toward constipation) and lipid metabolism, particularly if there are gallstones! Olive Leaf is a great example of a tonic herb that is hiding within plain sight! The easiest way to imbibe this superfood is with a tablespoon of Olive oil per day - but if you have specific symptoms the leaf may be what you need! Nimbin Apothecary sells Olive leaf tincture - contact us if you feel you are in need of this ancient medicine.
