23.01.2022 Can bees see colours ? Yes , but differently to us. We base our color combinations on red, blue and green, while bees base their colors on ultraviolet light, blue and green. In the invisible for human eye world of ultraviolet light, many flowers have a bull’s eye pattern that helps bees find the source of nectar easily. ... Seeing the world as insects may see it can reveal "landing strips" which are invisible to the human eye. These act to guide insects to the nectar they feed on. The most likely colors to attract bees, according to scientists, are purple, violet and blue. Photo by @chris_wheelwright . #beescanseecolour #honeybee #theworldofblue #borage #bees #beefacts

16.01.2022 Can bees see colours? While our eyes can detect three different colours red, blue and green, bees cannot see red, but they can see blue and green, as well as ultraviolet light Professor Dyer from Australian University RMIT lead a reserach that indicated there was a strong link between the colours commonly seen in today's flowers especially blue and white and the colours bees could best detect and discriminate against others.... The research showed that flowers in Australia have evolved to suit the colour vision of Australian native bees. In many parts of Australia, native plants have evolved to have red flowers, specifically to attract birds. Scientists think the reason some plants have evolved to have a red hue that attracts birds, and not bees, might be to do with the concept of "resource partitioning". . . . #australiannativeflowers #honeybees #whiteflower #colour #bees #backyardbeekeeping #bluemountainsnsw #pollinators #pollen #hibiscus See more

09.01.2022 Swarming The beautiful, majestic dance happening in the sky in front of our eyes is swarming , or in other words : reproduction at colony level. When we think of bee reproduction, we think about the queen laying eggs, the adult bees emerging from eggs and so on. This represents reproduction at the level of the individual bee. When bees swarm, a single colony becomes two. This can be considered reproduction at the colony level and it is an essential element of the way bees... live and survive. The colony acts, in many ways, as an organism unto itself. The collective wisdom of the colony greatly outweighs the awareness or actions of any one bee. Like any organism, the colony needs to survive and is also motivated to reproduce. It is through swarming that the colony reproduces Worker bees are able to detect when it's time to swarm . In preparation for the swarm, the workers will deprive the queen of food in order to slim her down so she can fly. They will also agitate and run her around in order to prevent her from laying many eggs. If they are going to swarm, they will create new queen cells and allow the queen to lay eggs so a new queen can emerge and take over the hive. If you see a swarm , please report it at http://www.swarmpatrol.com and a local beekeeper will receive a text about swarm . Local beekeepers often move swiftly to pick up swarms for their apiaries . #beeswarming #beecolony #swarminthesky

07.01.2022 What happens in autumn? In summer , when nectar and pollen are in abundance , Queen Bee sees the incoming food and lays up to 2000 eggs per day to support a colony of 60000 -80000 bees. In autumn as the foraging bees bring less and less food, the worker bees start to change the shape of the brood cells to tell the queen to decrease the laying of eggs for brood.Once the queen bee has started to decrease laying eggs, worker bees will then start to starve the drones ( male ...bees) and kick them out. Optimising the numbers of colony and stored supply will help bees survive during cold winter months. #autumnhoney #honeybee #beehive #overwinter #optimising #honeystorage #bee #beefacts #beautifulinsects #insectsofinstagram #beesofinstagram #beelove #ninasbees

Here's what Kim says: "The beard will be 2 years old this Christmas. It's been trimmed once, not to mention a small fire while welding once that I managed to get out myself !!! I feel the natural balms / oils are more beneficial than the chemically based ones, that are so readily available in the major chains. 06.01.2022 Blue Flower Wasps You might have already guessed, I love wasps as much as I love bees. I only get upset when I see European wasps around. They don't belong in Australia . Like native bees , most native wasps feed on nectar from flowers and are great pollinators. I particularly love Blue Flower Wasps, they have catchy bright blue wings . ... Have you seen those thick, white grubs in the soil that feed on the grass roots ? Female flower wasps dig through the soil to reach the beetle larve ...to lay an egg on it . The developing wasp larva then eats the living grub. Hmm..breakfast lunch and dinner . 06.01.2022 "Welcome home Sister " . To help their sisters to find way home , worker bees stand at the entrance of the hive and release "Welcome home" pheromone. Workers have ascent (Nasonov) glandat the tip of the abdomen. To release the chemical mixture (pheromone) the workers stand high on the hind legs with the abdomen elevated and tilt the last abdominal segment downward while fanning the wings. 05.01.2022 Ever notice the more some lip product you apply to dry lips, the more of that product you need to keep them soft ? Yes, some lip balms exacerbate dryness! The answer lies in the ingredients . Some ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin pull moisture out of the skin, especially in a dry environment (according to the leading dermatologist Leslie Baumann, MD) . Another culprit is petrochemical derivatives like petrolatum , mineral oil , benzene, anything with PEG, ... DEA , MEA, anything that starts with butyl, propy. Nina's Bees lip balm is carefully formulated with balanced moisture retaining ingredinets (like honey) and occlusive ingredients that lock the beautiful moistute in ( like beeswax and cocobutter) . No additives or preservatives, just pure , natural ingredients that will make your lips soft and moisturised without drying them. . . #lipbalm #softlips #naturalskincare #beeproduct #ninasbees #cleaningreadients #lipcare

02.01.2022 Where is my home? When bees are out foraging they use landmarks to orientate themselves back to their hive. By creating a mental map of house roofs, gardens, orchards, fields, and natural landmarks, bees basically have aGPS screen in front of their eyes, guiding their trips back and forth from the hive. Instead of North, South, East or West directions , bees use sun orientation. If a bee maintains a strict angle between the angle of the flight and the angle of the sun, it... should be able to easily replicate that on the way back to the hive. But wait , there is more ! Bees also have an internal honing device which works like a GPS to orientate themselves by magnetic variations around them. photo by @queenjovado #amazing #honeybee #orientation #beesflight #beefacts
