25.01.2022 Meditation is hard! It's particularly hard for those with busy minds... the very people who need it the most. Part of dealing with modern life and learning to offset the stress that it brings with it, is learning to calm the mind. . You can do breathing exercises or listen to calming rhythmic music but, really, nothing actually beats learning to meditate. There is nothing as good as meditation for really calming the mind and/or seeding it with benefit for the whole body. . N...ope, I don't recommend sitting quietly and trying to do this all on your own. Honestly, if you can crack out a good 3-5 seconds thinking of nothing then you are a hero. It's bloody hard! . What I do recommend is the use of guided meditations. I have several favourite apps that I recommend to clients, one of which is INSIGHT TIMER. You can use the app or the website; you can pay or just use the free meditations, like me. . Today, I found this beauty. It runs for 15 mins so I listened to it while I lay in the sun (7 mins on each side like a rotisserie chicken). Don't be put off by this guy's presentation - his voice drops you very quickly into a mental space where real benefit takes place. . Go now! What else do you have to do? Do you even know what day it is? Enjoy! . www.ninaward.com.au https://insighttimer.com//gui/finding-peace-in-this-moment

24.01.2022 LEARNING TO BE FLEXIBLE!!! . Huh? OK, back to square one. . If there's one thing we can walk away from this year with is a new understanding of not getting to attached to our plans and learning to roll with the punches. ... . I've been super impressed with how well these few days of hard lockdown have gone - people have been uber respectful of one another. . There's a bit if me that's sad about moving back out of my happy little home bubble but another that's relieved that, for now, we filter back into near normality. . See you all on the flip side. . www.ninaward.com.au See more

24.01.2022 When science catches up to herbal medicine!!! I love it when this happens... . This brand new research done by the University of Michigan confirms actions of humble ginger in helping to reduce antibody activity in autoimmunity, something that conventional medicine struggles to do. . In autoimmunity, the immune system is inadvertently triggered to identify certain tissues of the body as 'foreign'. This can results in antibody formation for (and attack of) tissues like the thyr...oid, joints, nerves, skin or the gut lining. One of the biggest goals in autoimmunity is calming the immune system and reducing antibody production. When we do this, the attack on 'self' is reduced and inflammation goes down. . https://www.sciencedaily.com/releas/2021//210106133030.htm . I use ginger therapeutically with clients but you can make a start yourself at home. Use grated ginger to make tea or add to to meals if you have any inflammation (pain, swelling, redness, fatigue), nausea/gas/bloating, if you feel the cold, or if you have an autoimmune condition. Apart from lowering autoimmune antibodies, ginger is an immune enhancer, is soothing to the digestive system and boosts circulation. . If you want to learn more about how you can better manage your autoimmune condition, please reach out. There's plenty that can be done apart from managing pain and inflammation. . www.ninaward.com.au See more

24.01.2022 KEEPING MOTHERHOOD REAL!!! . I'm not afraid to say that my plunge into motherhood was awful - I couldn't cope, I was exhausted, felt I was losing my mind, felt unsupported (despite being surrounded by people), and out of control. And this shizzle went on for years. If you feel like this or have felt like this, I want you to know it's totally OK. . Some women literally do have amazing post natal experiences - their house is immaculate, they're calm, feel like they have a plan ...through this time, and could basically conquer the world while simultaneously raising the heroes of tomorrow. These are not my people... but I am super pleased for you if this was/is you. . I've been watching this hilarious show, The Letdown; it's therapy really. It's one of those straight up, honest demonstrations of what mothering babies (plus trying to stay clean, socialise and accept help) is really like. So insanely refreshing! My babies are enormous now (teens) but I've still found this show really cathartic. It's just so nice to know that, although I desperately felt it at the time, I'm not alone... and neither are you. . 24.01.2022 HOW TO HACK YOUR BRAIN CHEMSITRY TO CUT BACK ON ALCOHOL!!! . OK, so let's get real here. It's the end of January, kids are back at school, you just can't use the "festive drinking" excuse anymore. Is it time? Is this the part where you decide that moving forwards you wont drink as much, maybe have a dry month or two or stop all together? . I'm not going to lecture you here about the damaging risks of drinking every day but I will draw your attention to why we turn to evening ...Continue reading

23.01.2022 DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER!!! . We all love a stunning looking meal but we don't want to let our quest for beauty put us off from throwing together something functional and tasty. . Here is today's ugly-assed but super tasty and nutrient dense offering. And it took 5 minutes to toss together. Bonus!... . Leftover roasted cauliflower and broccoli florets, hidden underneath is some leftover roasted capsicum (super yummy), a light sprinkle of hard goats cheese (or whatever your fancy is), 2 grated carrots sauteed until caramelly, and a small can of salmon in spring water. . If I was going for pretty, I could have drizzled over olive oil, some chopped parsley and perhaps some pepitas for crunch. . Super yummy!!! . www.ninaward.com.au See more

21.01.2022 MORE TRAINING!!! . It's constant learning in this field. Reassuring for clients, I always feel. Part of this is imposed on Health Practitioners in order to retain our association memberships to practice and part is a HUGE love of staying up with research and new ways to help clients. . I'm about to launch into months of additional training specifically to support a client group that can be challenging... Metabolic Conditions. This includes thyroid dysfunction, PCOS, diabetes,... fatty liver, menstrual mayhem as well as inflammatory conditions like autoimmune disease which are often magnified by hormone and blood sugar concerns. . What's super exciting about this support programme is that it's 100% food based and personalised to each individual. . I'm looking forward to sharing this programme with my clients. . www.ninaward.com.au See more

17.01.2022 CHEMICALS IN PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS!!! . This morning, I did something that I literally NEVER do. I commented on the post of some makeup influencer dude who was talking about the safety of chemical sunscreens (as opposed to barrier sunscreens) and of how safe toxic chemicals used in skin care are. . This guy, who looks about 23, has gorgeous skin (bless!) and was commenting on the skin of a famous woman exactly my age who has aged beautifully. He used her 'poorly aged' skin ...as an example of why we need to use chemical sunscreens. What a way to get any woman off side !!! Amazingly, his followers were all joining in. (there's a whole other post right there). . Anyway, he (being in the cosmetic industry) has fallen under the spell of 'if things are allowed in our sunscreens and skincare then they must be safe'. Here's a few important things that anyone putting things on their skin needs to know... . * the skin is totally permeable. That means that, if a molecule is small enough, then that little dude is going to slide on into the skin and the tissues and blood vessels underneath * there are around 70,000 different chemicals with varying impact on our bodies and the environment that are being used in personal care products and household cleaning products. A compound's approval for use is not based on safety testing. It is buyer beware! * reports on different compound groups and the outcomes for humans include endocrine disruption (that's sex hormones and thyroid all out of whack - infertility, PMS & weight gain), cancer causing (like talc and coal tar products), skin/ eye/ nose/ lung irritation, brain toxic (like lead in some hair dyes and cheap red lipsticks), promotion of antibiotic resistance, and other neurological effects (ever felt dizzy after painting your nails?) . What you choose to put on your skin is 100% personal choice and it's fair to say that just because something is 'natural' that it's not always safe either but it's important to be aware and do your research. . If you think you could tighten up your skincare, haircare, sunscreen or cleaning product regime, avoid overwhelm but just swapping out one product at a time. Use customer reviews when researching products online and if you really want to dig deep into what's in your own products consider researching ingredients at EWG Skin Deep. . Lastly, here's some pretty shocking research by the University of California that just came out last month about the quantities of chemicals from all sorts of different sources being found in our bodies. . https://www.sciencedaily.com/releas/2021//210317094621.htm . www.ninaward.com.au See more

15.01.2022 DOING NOTHING!!! . When was the last time you did nothing... and felt guilt free about it? Modern life has us poorly programmed and prizes busyness. 14.01.2022 USING THE INTERNET FOR GOOD!!! . Jeez, the interwebs and social media is full of shit! We scroll through people whingeing and whining about stuff, teens and their self obsessed TickTok dances (I'm in a few - don't judge), people shouting out things as fact when they just aren't, bored lockdown folk road testing bizarre items that we're so unlikely to ever need, and the cat and dog videos - oh the cat and dog videos. The prefect time wasters!!! . If you haven't lost a good 3-5... hours from 'just sitting down for a quick scroll' then you've been living under a rock. The entirety of human knowledge is on the net and we knowingly make these choices to watch cat videos. Huh? . Anyway, today I have used I have used the internet for good. I feel, how the internet should be used. Kind of like when a teen says, 'hey I'm going to build a computer', watches a few YouTube vids and then ACTUALLY builds a computer (true story), or when the washing machine breaks down and you decide to self repair using more instructional YouTube vids (another true story). These are awesome cool things, right? . My success today is not quite as high achieving as building a 'puter or repairing a white good but I'm pleased none the less. From the moment I though, 'I really need to work out how to properly crisp a salmon skin', to the learning and completion was about 10 delicious minutes. THIS is the internet at it's best. . 10.01.2022 Get in before the PRICE INCREASE!!! Book now for the best prices. . I need to substantially increase my initial consult fees for 2021 to reflect the amount of value that I offer to my clients. My current clients will attest to the depth of research that I like to do after an initial consult and, with most, I draw up visual reports and thorough pathology reviews, which I love to share so that we can both understand the person's underlying causes/drivers. This is a big part of ...our success together. . This is the service I love to provide and it helps me to get great results with clients as well as helping clients to stay focused because they get an understanding of each step along the way. . With this in mind, if you have been thinking about coming to see me (or you have a friend who would benefit from hanging out with me) but perhaps the time hasn't been quite right, I urge you to make a booking before the prices go up on the 4th January 2021. 09.01.2022 MANTRAS THAT ARE SLOWLY KILLING YOU!!! . + If I don't do it myself it wont get done + If I don't do it myself it wont be done 'properly' + I can do this, all the other *mums*/ *biz owners*/ *staff* can cope. Why can't I?... + If I don't do this myself then I haven't proven my worth . This applies to every area of your life - home life, work life, business owners. If you can afford to pay someone to do mundane things in your life that you hate, do it (gardening, cleaning, meal prepping). If other people live or work with you, they should all be helping out. If they're not, ask them to. It's part of the 'deal' of cohabitation/ coworking. If you're a business owner (particularly a sole trader), outsource the boring things like accounts and design so you can focus on your area of genius. . Thinking that you can (and attempting to) do all the things will burn you out. You'll be tired, feel overwhelmed, unappreciated and resentful. When you look back at life, you'll want to remember that you had time and energy to have fun, not that you slaved yourself into an early grave. I see this pattern in myself and my clients ALL the time. It's time for a change! Are you in? . I'd like help with my out of control lawn edges, meal prepping and general 'keep crap tidy around the house' kind of things. I'm loosening my reins to allow the help to come to me. . 08.01.2022 CORE MUSCLES!!! . Do you know how hard it is to work the core muscles? Those sneaky little fellas that wrap around our abdomen, both externally and internally... such a pest! . You've got sit ups, bridges, planks, all those moves where you're on your hands and knees lifting bit and bobs up while you try and balance. Not really that fun, right?... . Well what if I told you that there was a move that would force you to smile, transport you back to simpler times of your childhood, and leave your midsection toned and quite achy to prove it (good achy)? Plus, you only really need to do 5-10 minutes at a time... then you are pooped, for sure. . So here it is folks! HULA HOOPING! Such an awesome activity that it doesn't even feel like a work out. There's so much concentrating going into just keeping that sparkly hoop going (and falling) that you don't even realise that it's good for you. . Hot tips - find a big hoop (not a kids one), channel your 6yo self and be persistent. I kid you not, first time around and you'll be pleased with 60 seconds. 07.01.2022 Every family has a story of loss from war. Every family! Even if that was 70 years ago, the stories shared within a family keep them alive and still evoke deep emotion in those descendants who never even met them. . This is one of our family's losses. Elaine Balfour-Ogilvy was my grandfather's sister, my mothers aunt, my great aunt, my children's great great aunt. There are three generations there who never even got to meet her yet we keep her story alive as do the various wa...r memorials around Australia. During the second world war, her transport ship was bombed, she made it to shore only to be shot in a planned massacre with 21 nursing colleagues. We and Australia only know of the events due to one miraculous survivor who made it back to Australia 3.5 years later as a rescued prisoner of war. . Today, my daughter tells Elaine's story at a school assembly for Remembrance Day, every year my mother and her sisters and cousins rally around for an annual service, and today I share this story with you. . It's no surprise that people become more interested in their ancestors as they age. We come to realise that part of how we find ourselves in the now and the future is based on those who came before us. To you that might mean emulating or breaking away from family strengths or weaknesses. It doesn't matter. Sharing family stories helps everyone with connection and understanding. . 05.01.2022 Well, here's some big news!!! The TGA have approved low dose CBD oil (it's non addictive and doesn't get you high) for over the counter sales at pharmacies . No matter where your head is regarding medical cannabis (smoking), it is hard to refute the effectiveness of CBD oil on the nervous system without all the unwanted side effects. Medically, we are already seeing huge leaps for people with anxiety, insomnia, ADHD, Parkinson's, pain and terminal management. . 04.01.2022 GARGLING - GET ON IT!!! . I recommend gargling to quite a few of my clients - hard, violent gargling. The sort that makes you tear up. I actually do this as this is a great way to stimulate the vagus nerve improving anything to do with internal organs or brain/mood balance - fatigue, low mood, poor digestion, swallowing issues, blood pressure issues, etc (this is a whole other post but you get the jist). Weird right? . Also, surely by now you have heard about salt water garg...les for when you have a sore throat, particularly soothing with warm water. You probably heard this gem from Grandma or a great aunt. It's been around a while. . Well, you just have to love this bit of scientific research which I stumbled across today when looking something else up. Turns out that it is now shown that gargling just with plain water (even better with salt) actually substantially reduces you chances of catching viral infections and reduces the length of illness once sick. . This research has actually been done on our most recent viral friend but you might have noticed that I don't really like to comment too much on that. That being said if you want something simple that you can be doing at home with the family to reduce viral infections this winter, get onto it. . Try 1/4 tsp salt in 1/4 - 1/2 C warm water, take a sip and gargle for 1 minute morning and night to prevent, and three times a day to reduce the duration of, a viral infection (aka cold or 'the big dude'). Spit water out after gargling and take another sip for round two. Couldn't' be more simple! . 04.01.2022 ADDICTION!!! . Addiction comes in many forms and often we don't even recognise an addiction, as some are so commonplace and normalised. Have a look at this list and see if you resonate with any of these addictions (or maybe someone in your life). Is anything that you do regularly stealing life experiences away from you? . I love this quote as a really simple way of helping us identify an addiction.... . - Drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and caffeine (substance addiction) - Food, particularly foods that works against us and our goals - Phone use and TV - Computer games (parents of teens, are your kids giving things up in order to game?) - Work - Pursuing the next best thing and not enjoying what you have - Shopping - Learning (yes, it's true, some are obsessive learners) - Exercise - Sex - Gambling . Can you think of any others? . To me, addiction is mostly about neurotransmitter balance (brain messengers). We seek a release of certain neurotransmitters to fulfil shortfalls (both of neurotransmitter levels and other unfulfilled emotional things in our lives). Dopamine is the biggest culprit but other neurotransmitters will get involved in addictive tendencies as well. All neurotransmitters are made from, and excesses broken down by, the foods we eat (protein and micronutrients). Food for thought! . Great share, Emma Lorenzo . www.ninaward.com.au See more

01.01.2022 HERE'S THE VEG AGAIN!!! . So often I recommend to my clients a savoury breakfast... my favourite being eggs and precooked vegetables. It is so insanely easy and can very prepared quicker than you think. . Roasting can make any vegetable taste divine. Out comes the sweetness and flavours that you never knew a vegetable had. Cauliflower is the perfect example. It was roasted cauliflower that finally got my kids eating this 'evil veg'.... . You can whip up a couple of roasting trays of veg in about 10 minutes, quicker if you're knife savvy. Wipe with olive oil, sprinkle on some salt and herbs and you're on your way. I allow 45 mins for hard veg (mostly I done even peel them) and about 25 mins for softer veg then keep them in containers in the fridge to use for breakfasts and add to meals. Give it a go! It's too easy. . www.ninaward.com.au
