24.01.2022 Very interesting research.

22.01.2022 LOGGERHEAD TURTLES NINGALOO BOUND 33 critically endangered turtles will be released into the Ningaloo Marine Park after they were found washed up in the So...uth West. Dozens of loggerhead turtle hatchlings were washed ashore due to strong winds and large swells last year. They were rehabilitated at AQWA and the Bunbury Dolphin Discovery Centre and have grown from a weight of 200 grams to some now weighing over a kilo. The turtles will be flown up to Exmouth with a number of them fitted with satellite transmitters to monitor their activity. Minister for the Environment Stephen Dawson said the release and tracking of the turtles was an excellent example of collaboration and community involvement and support. The release highlights the importance of people reporting strandings of any marine species to the Parks and Wildlife Service and the release of rehabilitated animals, he said. : State Government

17.01.2022 SHOCK DISCOVERY OF 'PERFECT LITTLE STAR' FOSSILS IN NORTH WEST The discovery of hundreds of sea lily fossils in a dusty riverbed near Exmouth has rewritten... the species' history book by millions of years. The find challenges paleontologists' theory of marine life evolution in the southern hemisphere. 10.01.2022 HOW DO CORAL REEFS PROTECT THE COAST FROM CYCLONES? Tropical Cyclone Olwyn battered Denham, Exmouth and Carnarvon in 2015. The category three system flatten...ed plantations, ripped roofs off homes, uprooted trees and power poles and left thousands of people without power. While TC Olwyn lashed the towns, scientists studied how the Ningaloo Reef protected the coastline from erosion. Pressure sensors on the seabed at Tantabiddi Beach near Exmouth measured changes in water pressure from passing waves. The University of Western Australia ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies - Coral CoE researchers measured waves up to 10 metres tall during the cyclone. Dr Michael Cuttler says the reef caused waves to break offshore, providing natural coastal protection. The study compared the impact of TC Olwyn on Tantabiddi Beach with coastlines without reefs where similar scale cyclones are common. "We found these beaches eroded up to 10 times more," Dr Cuttler says. He warned the ability of reefs to protect coastlines was predicted to decline due to deceasing coral health and rising sea levels. Picture: Dr Michael Cuttler at Tantabiddi Beach. 07.01.2022 THE UN MOVES TO PROTECT THE BIGGEST FISH IN THE SEA Whale sharks were among 34 species chosen for extra conservation protection at the world's largest wildlife ...summit in Manila last week. The United Nations 12th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Migratory Species is held every three years to reassess vulnerable or endangered animals' status. Last year, whale sharks were bumped up from vulnerable to endangered on the IUCN Red List, which means they are at risk of extinction. Until now, countries with whale sharks in their waters were encouraged to protect them but now they will have to implement stricter legislation. Parks and Wildlife Service Exmouth whale shark protection officer Dani Rob says all 120-odd countries with whale sharks need to pitch in to protect them. "There’s a number of countries that are whale shark hotspots - Madagascar, Mozambique, Pakistan and Tanzania - but they don’t have any legislation in place.. so we need to get them on board to do the right thing," Ms Rob said. "Whale sharks at Ningaloo are fully protected under our Federal and State legislation but some of our satellite tracking has shown that our sharks head up into Indonesian waters. "Indonesia isn’t a signatory to this convention at the moment so when the sharks leave our waters, what happens when they reach Indonesian waters is out of our hands." Ms Rob said the Exmouth population appeared healthy, but because it takes 35-40 years for whale sharks to reach sexual maturity, it could take a long time to notice changes. "It's imperative we're doing as much as we can now to look after them," she said. Picture: Dani Rob

06.01.2022 New research by Al Harry shows that sharks and rays may live much longer than we previously thought. Check out his guest post on what he found, and what it could mean for shark fisheries management! http://www.southernfriedscience.com/long-live-sharks-and-r/

06.01.2022 Devastating. Time to get loud and involved...again.

04.01.2022 Our new global study shows that whale sharks congregate in specific areas of shallow water, next to steep slopes that quickly give way to areas much deeper wat...er (usually between 200 metres and 1,000 metres). We identified three main reasons. First, the deep water is used by whale sharks for feeding. Studies have shown the sharks diving to depths of almost 2 kilometres (1,928 metres to be precise) to feed on zooplankton and squid. Second, the steep slopes are known to bring nutrients up to the surface from the deep, which in turn increases the abundance of plankton and attracts large numbers of filter feeding species. And finally, in shallow water, as well as feeding on coral and fish spawn, the sharks are able to thermoregulate, warming themselves back up after their dives into deep water which gets as cold as 4. https://theconversation.com/whale-sharks-gather-at-a-few-sp
