23.01.2022 More than just fascinating wildlife, Exmouth also has an interesting history. The SS Mildura was carrying cattle when it hit the reef during a cyclone in 1907. At the time the crew survived but the cattle were lost. 11.01.2022 Every day it’s something different - yesterdays trip we saw... Mantas Dugongs Humpback whales And then these guys... False killer whales These sleek animals are actually more closely related to dolphins but their name apparently comes from having a similar shaped skull to orcas. 05.01.2022 So the whale sharks might have moved on for the year but we are seeing plenty of other wildlife including their cousins the leopard shark also known as the zebra shark. These guys are a type of carpet shark like the whale shark and another of our favourites the wobbegong. Young sharks have vertical stripes (like a zebra) while adult sharks have the easily recognisable brown spots. It’s mating season and females like this are dragging their 100-150kg bodies up to beach to lay up to 200 eggs. Often they return to the same beach where they were born miles away from their feeding grounds....very hard work indeed!
