18.01.2022 IRLEN SYNDROME (Visual Processing Disorder) IS A LIFE-LONG CONDITION. Many children come to see us and receive Irlen lenses because thare having problems learn...ing to read, or to read fluently. They often have other issues as well, like being unable to concentrate or focus in class, or being fidgety in class and unexplained fatigue as the day progresses, Once they have their Irlen Spectral Filters, these symptoms improve, and unfortunately, many parents think that their child does not need them anymore once they start to read. The reality is that, while they can now read, if they do not wear their Irlen filters, their brain will continue to have to work much harder than it should, because it still has to deal with the wavelengths of light that cause their Visual Processing Disorder. So, if you have a child who had Irlen lenses when young, but now tells you that he/she does not need them anymore, be aware that they DO still need them. So, if they grow out of their frames, or if they have overcome their initial difficulties, PLEASE still bring them back for a recheck every 18 months. 16.01.2022 IRLEN SYNDROME IS HEREDITARY Today I tested a Year 2 boy, whose sibling and mother both have Irlen. Even though he has been tested recently with a high IQ and ...he reads incredibly well (he read and comprehended a Year 6 book to me) his mother wisely had him tested for Irlen as she knew the high instance of it being hereditary, regardless of him achieving well academically. These are the students who are often overlooked because they are achieving, however, they are often not achieving to their full potential and they are also subject to symptoms that could otherwise be reduced or eliminated by wearing Irlen Filters. These symptoms include headaches, eye strain and behaviour issues just to name a few, which all affect performance and if left unchecked could turn into greater problems throughout their schooling life. When we found this student's specific Irlen tint, he read with greater ease and comfort and reported that words don't move or shake like they do sometimes. 13.01.2022 Have been doing some consulting work at a small independent high school, assessing reading difficulties and providing pre-assessment for Irlen Syndrome and Phon...ological Dyslexia. Over the past two weeks I have identified a no of students with high indicators for Irlen Syndrome. The most disturbing aspect is that all 5 of these students were identified in primary school as experiencing some form of Dyslexia! All 5 identified so far basically are struggling to read above Year 3 level - though they are in Year 9 and 10!!. One had Irlen glasses in primary but was bullied so badly she won't wear them (and is struggling to read). Another young man used blue paper and transparencies in primary but there was no follow-up. A third struggled to read a Year 2 text - read easily with a transparency. A 4th was told he had Dyslexia but there was no follow up. The 5th student I just finished assessing! He was another one who was told he had Dyslexia - struggled to read at Year 3 level, until we tried 2 transparencies!! But was even more interesting was his description of the visual distortions he experiences! He can see the word he is reading but all the other words move around, blur or shake and he struggles to stay on the line he is reading. Hence his visual span is limited to one word at a time. What is so frustrating about these cases is that there is such a simple solution - Pre-assessment for Irlen (Visual Processing Difficulties) in early primary. These students have been allowed to "fail", and there is an associated cost to their self-esteem as well as their job prospects. What is even more disturbing that these 5 students have been on literacy intervention programs since primary with no progress because no one has taken the time to determine the "why". If your brain struggles with visual processing it does not matter how much tutoring or intervention programs you do - there will be little or no progress until the root cause is established! #IrlenSyndrome #readingdifficulties #visualprocessing #readingintervention See more

Common factors for brain change include: natural brain development with age (growth spurts), being on different medications, illness, experiencing concussions/TBI, hormonal changes. Adele first came to the Houston/Galveston Irlen Clinic when 8 years old, and blue was the color. The following year it was grey-blue. Mom and Adele didn’t expect much of a change this year, but being 10 years there had been a growth spurt and orange lenses were the result!
