22.01.2022 This is Patsy, one of the most amazing people you will ever meet. Patsy is one of many in Australia living and fighting the vicious Motor Neuron Disease (MND) a...nd doing it with a beautiful smile on her face every damn day. MND or ‘The Beast’ as AFL legend Neale Daniher likes to call it, (who is also putting up an incredible fight) affects the motor neurons that communicate between the brain and the muscles that allow us to move, speak, swallow and breathe. There is currently no cure and the average life expectancy once diagnosed with MND is a devastating 2-3 years. As Patsy’s Exercise Physiologist I am working with her to help maintain muscle strength in the hope she can continue completing functional everyday tasks such as getting dressed and getting in and out of bed. We also do some balance training to help reduce the risk of tripping and falling. Despite the unknown future closing in Patsy is able to laugh and we have a lot of fun together every session and I feel honored to be working with her. Tomorrow, half time of the Melbourne vs Collingwood clash, FightMND will hold its 7th Big Freeze, an event and charity (Neale being the co-founder of) raising awareness and money to help research in the hope for a cure and to help improve treatment. Please please please buy a beanie or donate and help FIGHT MND! Keep fighting Patsy, Neale and all other Aussies fighting this horrible and debilitating disease we know as MND.

So what are some of the signs your mental health might be declining during the pandemic? And what can you do about it?

19.01.2022 This is an inspiring story from a mate JUST A DIGGER I write this as a representation for all the diggers, their welfare and squandered potential through... the misallocation of resources, corruption and lack of fundamental understanding of what an Australian digger is. After two deployments to Afghanistan as a searcher (MTF-2 & ATF-1) carrying a 60kg pack day in day out, my enthusiasm for the army herniated along with my L5-S1 disc, the only option was back surgery and a medical discharge. I was ticking over my 8th year in uniform with a blank rank slide when I was finally forced to face the question that bores into the back of every soldier’s head What will I be when I’m not being a solider?. The deployments and job role consumes your identity, making it a question typically answered by dubious crickets. The only boy hood dream I had was to be an engineer, but I lacked the discipline required at school, and so the army was a respectable alternative. The defence force crippled my body but imparted me with discipline and I still had my brain after all. It was suddenly obvious; I was going to see if I could realise my dream and become an Engineer. My chain of command naturally bastardised me through my transition and when they heard of my plan for higher education could only respond with cynicism. You’re just a digger., You guys are too dumb for uni.. I listened with quiet confidence. I wasn’t the first digger to attend university, I’d done my research. I’d just crossed paths with a mate in the base gym who was one semester into his law degree and leaving the next day. He was super calm about the whole process. Maybe it’s not such a big deal? When the day came to discharge, I had a compulsory meeting with DVA who told me due to my medical discharge they had an obligation to vocationally rehabilitate me. Good, I can use all the help I can get. DVA offered me an RPL to be a security guard or a forklift course. As attractive as those prospects were, I advised them of my plan to be an Engineer. DVA’s reply was more PC but just as inspiring as my chain of command’s. The more I asked the more blunt they were. We are not supporting you through university, it is a bad idea and we do not want to support what is sure to be a failure of a rehabilitation plan. DVA were going to be of no help to me, that was clear. I moved into a share house around the corner from the university and did semester after semester, with a few long nights, but definitely nothing compared to long nights in uniform. In the year that was 2020, with the world falling apart, I did my honours year of two degrees in Civil and Mechanical Engineering and assisted in founding a student veteran chapter to support the same method of transition. As the student veteran chapter’s first President I witnessed the faces of all the diggers on their first day of the unique military to university bridging course (Military Academic Pathway Program -MAPP). Many were full of nerves and trepidation, as well as speaking the familiar words that were also said to me. Uni is no place for a digger. Sadly, nothing had changed, but these new vets were the lucky ones, because they about to learn what I now know. It is very achievable! Many diggers have succeeded before me and many are still succeeding, they just don’t turn back to identify who else needs to see the path they took. The most attractive aspect of the role was to inspire and support the exploited and disillusioned diggers to realise their own potential dwarfs anything the defence could offer. Any digger that has contemplated their own potential, I encourage you to reach out to your fellow diggers currently studying at an Australian Student Veteran Association chapter. To the diggers that are currently studying, having crossed that mental boundary, you should inspire others to see that it is achievable and help shape the space by being active in the chapter. It’s just diggers helping diggers. More value than what is currently on offer. I am done studying for now and it’s time to get my hands dirty again. Some of the biggest learning curves will not be in any of the words contained within my old textbooks. The most satisfying part is showing them what a digger can do. They did not decide how that story ends, I decide how this story ends.

14.01.2022 While South Australia has managed well through the pandemic so far, we need everyone to keep doing the great work that got us here. We cant be complacent. The... situation in Victoria has shown how easy it is for COVID-19 to spread. We can all follow Professor Spurriers trusted guide to staying COVID safe and play our part to stop the spread. Wash your hands regularly Minimise touching your face Wipe down frequently touched surfaces Cover coughs and sneezes into your elbow or a tissue Stay home if youre feeling sick Keep your distance from others whenever and wherever possible And remember, if you have symptoms (fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny nose, shortness of breath, loss of taste or smell), even mild, get tested: www.sahealth.sa.gov.au/covidtesting

13.01.2022 Anxiety affects 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men in Australia. Now, many of us are feeling increased stress and anxiety in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, and ex...perts are concerned there will be an increase in mental illness as a result. Being regularly active not only reduces your risk of developing mental health conditions, but it can also help those living with conditions like anxiety to manage their symptoms more effectively. Remember to get up regularly, avoid long periods of sitting, get some fresh air when you can and prioritise daily exercise. For some great breathing exercises to help manage anxiety, head to our website and check out our latest blog. Lastly, remember that you're not alone. If you need to talk to someone, call Lifeline on 13 11 14. #ExerciseRight #MentalHealthMatters

12.01.2022 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a critical resource that is in very high demand across South Australia, as it is in other health care systems around the ...world. Right now, it is vital that our frontline staff have priority access to PPE. There is very little evidence supporting the widespread use of face masks in healthy people to prevent transmission in public. Face masks are effective when worn by someone who is ill with COVID-19. If you have the virus, or think that you might, you must self-isolate, and wear a mask when you are near other people (such as seeking medical attention). To stop the spread, its better to: Practice social distancing (staying 1.5m away from others) Wash your hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds Cover coughs and sneezes Minimise touching your face Stay home if youre unwell Learn more: www.stopthespread.sa.gov.au

10.01.2022 It can be hard to be positive right now... But mindset is so important. Feeling robbed that your gym is closed? Can't go walking on in your favourite national ...park? Can't get to the beach to surf? Favourite exercise class cancelled? WE HEAR YOU. But try to see the flip side... You can try new exercises - and who knows, you might find something you love. You've got more time to be active. Self isolation gets pretty boring, am I right? You may as well spend some of that time working out! You can get your family involved. Working out with your partner and family is a great way to connect. Remember, this won't be forever. Stay positive and stay active... your body and mind will thank you for it!
