25.01.2022 September is Dementia Awareness Month! Today I took my Nanna along to a Brain Health seminar at the City of Melville Daniel Lane from the Perth Brain Centre shared with us what we can do to keep our brains healthy.... Every 3 seconds someone in the world is diagnosed with dementia, but there are things we can do to promote cognitive fitness. The more we actively use our brains by practising memory, problem solving and learning new things, the less likely we are to encounter brain problems as we age. Getting enough sleep , eating well and reducing screen time also help to keep our brains fit and healthy and reduce the chance of dementia.
20.01.2022 It’s Seniors Week! To celebrate, the City of Melville hosted The Man Cave, a mini expo targeted at men. The event included many stalls such as Tai Chi, Mah Jong, performances, table tennis, Men’s Shed, Neighbourhood Watch and many more. What a great opportunity for men to find an activity to get involved with as they get older. Well done to all involved in pulling this event together!
18.01.2022 MELVILLE BOWLING CLUB UPDATE After spending the last three Tuesday nights debating the Melville Bowling Club lease, the Melville Council voted 8-4 to grant a 50 year lease to the Club. As I said in the meeting last night, I believe 50 years is too long. Two weeks ago, I attempted to move an amendment to reduce the length of the lease to ten years with a further ten year option, but the amendment was ruled out of order by the mayor. ... Last night I tried to further amend the lease in response to community concern, but again, was unsuccessful. More detail in the video below.
15.01.2022 This morning I visited Bateman Primary School and spent some time exploring Bateman Bush Tucker, the school’s brand new Indigenous Education Reserve. Various stakeholders from the school community have come together to create something incredibly special for the whole community to enjoy. Visitors are able to learn about the amazing Indigenous edible and medicinal flora Australia has to offer, whilst enjoying the serenity of this beautiful little space, and perhaps even spott...ing some local wildlife. This project was a recipient of Project Robin Hood funding from the City of Melville. Round V of Project Robin Hood is coming soon, so keep an eye out!
11.01.2022 It was my pleasure on the weekend to attend the 44th annual City of Melville Art Awards. The exhibition showcases more than 260 artworks by established and emerging Western Australian artists, including local talent living in the City of Melville. The Art Exhibition is open now at the Melville Civic Centre and will be open until Sunday.
09.01.2022 Earlier this week, along with Mayor George Gear and Cr Karen Wheatland, I met with residents who would like to see a fence installed at their local park to stop children and dogs running onto the road. Locals say they’ve seen too many close calls, so they’re calling on the City of Melville to agree to the installation of a fence to keep everyone safe. The park is very popular with adults, kids and especially dogs, so the project has lots of community support!
08.01.2022 Today I joined some Kardinya residents for their street Christmas party I have been able to assist them with a couple of issues regarding parking and cleanliness of the street, so they were kind enough to invite me along today. What a lovely little community. Street parties like this aren’t as common as they used to be. It was beautiful to hear about how these neighbours look out for one another and help each other out in times of need.
07.01.2022 The Melville council is currently considering providing the Melville Bowling Club with a 50 year lease. The decision last Tuesday was put on hold and will be considered by the council this Tuesday night. What are your thoughts?
06.01.2022 Wonderful day at the WALGA Annual General Meeting at Crown Perth with Cr Karen Wheatland. Always good to catch up with councillors from all over WA and hear about some of the challenges faced by different local governments across our state.
