25.01.2022 According to the recent STEM Workforce Report released by the Office of the Chief Scientist, only 31% of people with university STEM qualifications were female.... The Future You initiative from Australia's Women in STEM Ambassador aims to break down the stereotypes of people working in STEM and increase numbers of women undertaking STEM education and careers in Australia. Launched last week, the campaign targets children aged 8-12 and explores some of the exciting career possibilities and real-world applications of STEM skills. 24.01.2022 Did you know that all #prepackaged products must comply with National Trade Measurement Regulations? Our #TradeMeasurement inspectors routinely do checks on products to make sure they comply with these regulations. To do this, they follow the Sampling and Test Procedures for Prepackaged Products. The National Measurement Institute is proposing revisions to these procedures which include: ... incorporating new test methods for linear and area measurements expanding the range of products for volumetric measurement tests allowing flexibility in recording test results amendments to enhance clarity of test procedures and facilitate internal consistency. The draft revised Sampling and Test Procedures for Prepackaged Products is available here https://bit.ly/3kn1WAB. Feedback can be provided online or via email to [email protected] Consultation closes on 9 November, 2020.
21.01.2022 What does pesto have to do with our Food Safety team? A lot actually! After several pesto products were recalled this year due to peanut contamination, NMI convened an Allergen Testing Special Interest Group. The group brings together experts from government and private organisations to share food allergen knowledge and discuss the limitations of common testing methods. Laboratories use common testing methods to identify allergens in food. ELISA detects the specific protein... molecule of an allergen and PCR identifies the DNA molecule of an allergen. NMI is leading a project to compare these test methods and to better understand why peanuts were detected in some pesto products. Undeclared food allergens are a significant food safety hazard. NMI’s work ensures that we support safe manufacturing and food labelling, and businesses can trace undeclared food allergens, which can cause acute risks to some people. You can find out more information about the work we do in the food sector here https://bit.ly/32ARgrm #FoodSafetyWeek #AllergenTesting #FoodAnalysis

14.01.2022 The health and safety of our staff is top priority. In recognition of National Safe Work Month, NMI executive asked staff to take time out to consider safety and wellbeing in the workplace for themselves, their colleagues and the workplace. Whether working in a lab or from home our staff rose to the challenge. Activities included reviewing work places, completing online safety modules and ergonomic assessments, and even attending virtual or socially distanced morning teas to focus on mental health. What did you do to recognise safe work month? #SafeWork
08.01.2022 Measurement is part of all science and integral to the work of this year’s recipients of the top award - the Prime Minister’s Prize for Science. The team of Emeritus Professor David Blair, Professor David McClelland, Professor Susan Scott and Professor Peter Veitch from the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery (OzGrav) were recognised for their critical contributions to the first direct detection of gravitational waves in 2015. Wor...king with gravitational wave detectors that use high-power laser beams, the team identified the need to measure distortion impacting detector sensitivity. They created new precision measurement technology that can be applied not only to gravitational wave signals, but also earthquake early warning, Earth observation and navigation systems. We congratulate all the 2020 Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science recipients. #PMPrizes #science #innovation
07.01.2022 Are you aware that NMI is collaborating with the Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation (ILSC) to analyse Kakadu Plum for vitamin C and micronutrients? This work provides Indigenous communities information on the nutrient properties of Kakadu plum, and aims to support greater Indigenous influence and control in the Kakadu plum market, maximising the flow of benefits back to the communities. We are currently looking at ways to provide more in-kind support to the ILSC and Kakadu p...lum project. The department has just released its Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Business Support Roadmap which aims to provide a cohesive approach to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses to contribute to and benefit from Australia’s economic growth. https://bit.ly/32xIQRq You can read more about the work we are doing with the ILSC here https://bit.ly/2Ivg3Wm
06.01.2022 We asked NMI’s Superstar of STEM and mum of two, Helen Salouros why she thinks the new 'Future You' campaign is important to encourage kids into careers that use STEM skills, and this is what she told us: As a mother of an 8- and 10-year-old I am thrilled with initiatives like 'Future You'. STEM subjects foster creativity, curiosity and ingenuity, they sharpen critical thinking and problem solving, and teach us about the world we live in and the challenges we face. Not a day ...goes by where I don’t see sparks of STEM in my boys and my nieces and nephews. Few things make me more proud and happy than to be surprised with offhand remarks where the kids explain to each other how stars are born, how fractions work or the big argument around what would happen if you fall in a volcano (apparently you either disintegrate before reaching the lava, or you can swim in it as long as you wear a special suit). 'Future You' is a bit of magic with the potential to inspire more young minds onto the path of STEM and that’s exciting because these wonderful boys and girls are the next generation of Australia’s scientists! #futureyoustem #STEM #stemforkids
05.01.2022 Happy International Men’s Day! Today we acknowledge all the men here at NMI. To fit in with this year’s theme of Better Health for Men and Boys, we asked staff to stop and to check in on their health- not just physical but mental as well. #menshealth

03.01.2022 Today, chemists and measurement scientists worldwide are celebrating Mole Day (moleday.org). On 20 May 2019, the mole was officially redefined as being 6.02214076 x 10 to the power of 23 chemical units, be it atoms or molecules. This VERY large number is near impossible to comprehend. However, it is the concept that while the number of atoms or molecules in a mole is the same for all substances, the mass is different and directly related to the atomic weight. For example, o...ne mole of carbon requires exactly one mole of molecular oxygen to fully convert to carbon dioxide. In practical terms, 12 grams of carbon-12 react with 32 grams of molecular oxygen-16. So, it is through mass (SI unit kg) that scientists manage the concept of the mole. Did you know that the National Measurement Institute is Australia’s peak body for chemical measurement? See our short video on the mole https://bit.ly/34mxf9h #MoleDay #chemistry #OzChem
03.01.2022 NMI wants your feedback on our latest consultation for proposed revisions to NITP 5.1- National Instrument Test Procedures for Fuel Dispensers other than LPG Dispensers Part of NMI’s role in managing trade measurement regulations is ensuring that documentation relating to testing procedures is relevant and up to date. We recently reviewed the NITP 5.1- National Instrument Test Procedures for Fuel Dispensers other than LPG Dispensers. NITP 5.1 describes the test procedures for... the verification and in-service inspection of fuel dispensers (other than LPG dispensers). It assesses whether they measure to within the maximum permissible errors specified in the National Trade Measurement Regulations 2009 (Cth) and that they comply with the Certificate of Approval. The proposed revisions include: clarifying requirements for volume standards permitting the use of volume standards constructed from other suitable materials amendment to scope to include ethanol, avgas and diesel exhaust fluid adding the ‘Low Level Cut-off’ test for systems fitted with a low level cut-off device removing prescriptive safety requirements The consultation period is open until 9 November, 2020. Information available at https://bit.ly/31rwRUY Please provide your feedback either online or by emailing us at [email protected] #TradeMeasurement #FuelDispenser
