25.01.2022 RSL Victoria have created a special commemorative booklet which contains seven stories - two stories about wartime Melbourne and five personal accounts of wartime service from WWII veterans. We hope reading this booklet will help inspire Victorians to reminisce, start conversations and even educate younger members of the community about Victory in the Pacific. Copies will be available at reception when the Noble Park RSL re-opens. In the meantime, enjoy reading these wonderf...ul stories. http://rslvic.com.au//RSL-Victoria-Victory-in-the-Pacific-

The following day, 15 August, is usually referred to as VP Day, and in 1945 Australian governments gazetted a public holiday as 'VP Day'. This year’s service will be streamed online so all Victorians can participate.

19.01.2022 The 75th anniversary of the end of WWII will be extra special for WWII veteran Jean Smith, who will mark her 100th Birthday on August 15. The former Australian ...Women's Army Service (AWAS) member will celebrate this special milestone on the same day that many Australians hold close to their hearts. Jean, who's first husband passed in combat in Libya in 1941, joined the Australian Women's Army Service (AWAS) during WWII. Jean also worked within the Chemical Warfare Unit based in Innisfail, far North QLD, including three trials on Brook Island, where the unit did specialist chemical research under a code of secrecy until 1970. After the War she married Bert Smith who was initially in the Army 2/22nd Battalion which served in Rabaul and New Briton, New Guinea, then in the RAAF as an Intelligence Officer with No 77 Squadron. Jean is a very proud veteran and long-standing member of the RSL community. We thank Jean for her service to our country and wish her a very special 100th birthday! Bless you Jean. #VPDay75

12.01.2022 Today we commemorate the Battle of Beersheba. On 31 October 1917, the heavily fortified town of Beersheba, in what is now Israel, was the scene of a historic mo...unted charge by the men of the 4th Australian Light Horse Brigade. Commencing at dusk, the brigade stormed the town, using their bayonets as swords. The momentum of the surprise attack carried them through the Turkish defences securing the town before it could be destroyed by the retreating Turkish force. The unconventional approach was a successthe town and its wells were secured, providing the 60,000 allied troops with access to the region’s only dependable source of water. However, 31 men from the Light Horse lost their lives and an additional 36 were wounded. Sadly, at least 70 horses also died during the charge. This November, please remember to buy a poppy or donate as we honour all of those who served our country, both past and present, and thank them for their bravery. #remembertoremember

12.01.2022 11.11.20 - Although Remembrance Day was commemorated a little differently this year, we continued to pause for just one minute to remember those who gave their lives in service to their country, those who returned home injured or ill, and those who bravely serve our country today. Once again, much appreciation to Dallas Goldburg for taking these great photos. Lest We Forget

11.01.2022 The significance of November 11 as one of our most important national occasions is not lost on many Australians. It is a time at which we reflect and remember the men and women who sacrificed their lives for ours. #remembertoremember Image Courtesy: Australian Defence Force

10.01.2022 Today we remember those who served during the Boer War which concluded in 1902 with the signing of the Peace Treaty of Vereeniging. Boer War Day commemorates th...e first war in which Australia fought as a nation. In 1899 NSW Lancers were the first to join in this war followed by all of the other colonies and after Federation in 1901 Australian units. The Boer War was also the first war in which Australians also fought alongside New Zealanders. We pay tribute to the memory of the 23,000 Australian men and women who served and the 1,000 that paid the supreme sacrifice. #lestweforget Image Courtesy: ABC AUS

06.01.2022 Today we commemorate Victory in the Pacific and the end of the Second World War! Victory in the Pacific Day, or VP Day, commemorates the end of the Second Worl...d War on August 14, 1945, when Japan accepted the terms of the unconditional surrender set by the Allied Nations. Also known as VJ Day, or Victory over Japan Day, it is commemorated on August 15, the day that Australian Prime Minister Ben Chifley announced the end of the war in a radio broadcast, before the signing of the official surrender took place on board the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, Japan, on September 2, 1945. VP Day meant an end to Australia’s war against Japan in the Pacific; a war that had begun half a world away in Europe that was brought close to home after Japan’s unprovoked attack on Pearl Harbour on December 7, 1941, We remember the sacrifices and service of our Diggers who fought for our freedom in the Pacific. #wewillrememberthem. 04.01.2022 On Saturday, August 15, Australia will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War also known as Victory in the Pacific or VP Day. Due to COVID-19, the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific will be the second major commemorative event that Victorian's will be unable to mark by coming together at local war memorials or at their RSL Sub-Branch. But just because we can't come together, doesn't mean that we can't commemorate. Help promote the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific on social media using the following hashtags #victoriaremembers #vpday75
