10.01.2022 The photo at the top of this page is approaching the summit of a mountain called Weissmies (4017m)on the Swiss/Italian border. It was the first acclimatisation peak we chose in preparation for climbing the Matterhorn (4478m) in 2010. Having come from sea level in Australia I really felt the altitude on this summit. My system had not had any time to adapt to cope and perform in the rarefied air. Core skills were all fine. We climbed a number of other 4000m peaks and it prog...ressively became easier to operate at altitude as my system adapted. Organisational metaphor. What if people in companies seeking high performance develop much the same as how my system responded during these climbs. To go straight to a high peak causes stress on the system beyond its capacity to cope even though core technical skills are present. Perhaps the role of leaders is to develop and manage a careful progression of successively higher peaks that allow a sense of success while systems adapt and resilience builds. We can read or view stories about mountaineering legends and want to go straight to high performance. There is always preparation and a development progression to go through to normalise and cope safely in high performance environments. Leaders that can map and mobilise this kind of progression in a company will have a far better chance of leaving satisfying sustainable performance behind them. Feel free to share..............



03.01.2022 Heading north to work in Europe this week. A mix of USA and Western/Eastern European people to work with. Looking forward to the rich context these people bring. Looking at African market strategy as well! Then down to Taiwan and working with a team focused on Asian markets. So a week in Europe and a week in Taiwan. Here we go!

02.01.2022 Have arrived in JiuJiang via Nanchang. Lots of lakes. Rivers and forests in this part of China. An area with a lot of mountain walks. Hotel on banks of Yangtze River. Looking forward to exploring!
