13.01.2022 POST CARE SUPPORTS: Long post but worth reading Make your new year's resolution With the close of one year and the beginning of another, we too are entering ...new territory. We are thrilled that our Care Packages are now being done by an organisation already funded by Department of Communities and Justice, and that we played a role in highlighting their importance to Government. Moving forward, we are launching new programs early in the new year that will see us support the young people the foster care system fails. Many, many young people are evicted from care on or shortly after their 18th birthday. Just think about that for a moment. A time that should be filled with excitement ... Parties, HSC, schoolies, uni, getting your driver's licence, TAFE, work ... Is instead, filled with fear and uncertainty. These are children who have grown up in hotels and group homes with rotating caseworkers, and even some from foster families who are unable to continue care past 18. Sure, there are a few homeless shelters or very temporary transitional housing. There are even some 6 or 8 week 'programs' the young people can undertake to fully prepare them for adulthood ... If only life worked like that. For anyone with older teenagers or adult children, you will know, from experience, that young people need a strong support network far beyond their 18th birthday. Children are leaving home later in life ... Well into their 20's and even 30's, I've even heard of 40's This is not an option for these young people. Through no fault of their own they were taken in to foster care, a system that should have looked after them, abandons them when they turn the magic number. All of a sudden they are nobody's responsibility and they slip through the cracks. I won't talk about their outcomes. The statistics around homelessness, teen pregnancies, self harm, substance abuse, incarcerations, lack of education and employment are all readily available on previous posts. These statistics have not improved in 10 years. There are great organisations that also document these ... THE HOME STRETCH and CREATE FOUNDATION to name two. Our supports will include: * Supported Housing * Education and Employment Pathways * Life Skills Training * Mentoring And not for 6 week or 3 months ... Until they turn 25 or as long as they need it ... The same as we would support our own children ... They deserve no less. We do not, and have never received Government funding. We rely on grants and fundraising activities to do what we do. And now we need your help. We need corporate partnerships and individual sponsorships. We need people talking about this issue. Our call to action: 1. Jump on our website today and donate whatever monthly amount you can. Even $1 per day will make a difference. And donations over $2 are tax deductible. www.fostercareangels.org.au 2. Share this post. Let's not be afraid to talk about their plight. They NEED us. The more people having these conversations, the closer we get to the NSW Government extending the care age from 18 to 21 ... or better. 3. Challenge your friends, family, colleagues, neighbours, everyone in your phone contact list and Facebook friend list to join you in an ongoing monthly donation. They say it takes a village to raise children, lets be that village.

12.01.2022 Thanks to the donors and supporters of Network of Caring and Network 21.

03.01.2022 Another reminder that the milestones for kids in care are drastically different. Before even turning 15, they're faced with planning how to support themselves f...rom 18. Let's give them a proper childhood and #makeit21. Please take a second to sign the pledge online: www.thehomestretch.org.au
