25.01.2022 A long line of Pow’s on their march back towards Chania. Photographs such as this were often taken with private cameras belonging to German troops .

24.01.2022 Well what can I say .. the walk has started ..off to a late start at that but have made good time considering the temperature . There is a nice sea breeze coming from the north . After a busy walk through Suda Bay and along the main road to rethymnon I've taken a break just outside of Aptera, next stop Stilos.

21.01.2022 A good day on the wreck of LCT A6 At Falasarna yesterday . It's very ominous to pass over the forward ramp and head towards the stern. Visibility was good but I could not see the stern from the bow.... A6 took part in the evacuation from the mainland to Suda while A20 suffered engine trouble and stayed in Suda Bay. It's estimated A6 carried 900 men during its journey to Crete . A6 and A20 were heading to Sphakia when sunk by stukas. Good book written by Australian archeologist Michael Bendon is available . www.forgottenflotilla.com

20.01.2022 A short video showing the route taken by myself in 2018..as I was using a different gps for my main recording I forgot to activate the relive app which I had not used before . Hence the late start point .

07.01.2022 Welcome to the Facebook page for www.nocountryforoldboots.com In 2018 I will be travelling to the island of Crete Greece on an expedition to trace the former evacuation route over the mountains taken by thousands of Kiwis,Aussies,Brits and troops from other nations at the end of the Battle of Crete 1941. The 75 km + journey will be made in 3 days similar to the original where more than 15,000 pushed themselves to the limits to potential evacuation from the fishing villiage of... Sphakia. More information can be found on the website. I will be adding more content soon. Thanks for visiting ! Mike Smythe

06.01.2022 A rare WW2 New Zealand made enamelled blue canteen with cover found recently in Greece,it appears to be un-used going by the condition of the original stopper, string and the cardboard base on the underside. also the insides are not rusted . apart from a bit of mothing it will make a good usable canteen to take with me to Crete in 2018 !

05.01.2022 Welcome to the No Country For Old Boots Facebook page. Follow the journey of retracing the walk thousands of allied troops took in order to evacuate the island of Crete in may and june 1941. The expedition will take place in May 2018,77 years after the event.

05.01.2022 German 1940 dated 9mm bullets found in the area of the former 7th general hospital and later POW Camp at agii apostoli just west of Chania A rare find these days

03.01.2022 Crete 2011 Maleme airfield with Theodorou island in the distance.

02.01.2022 An example of a WW2 New Zealand made boot worn by Kiwis on Crete. The soles were leather which was what people were used to then ,apart from wearing out quickly they lacked the cushioning and comfort we have today . Many men walked over the white mountains in bare feet ,feet wrapped in bandages or even ripped clothing.
