25.01.2022 A few great tips here for smart phones batteries.

24.01.2022 Opinion: Why does my phone battery die so fast? http://www.abc.net.au//phone-battery-charger-ever/10037368

20.01.2022 So I thought I would post handy tech tips every now and again to help out. Today's tip is data backup. A lot of people post on Facebook "I've lost my phone, everybody please send me your phone number".... Android phones can backup your contacts to your Google accounts and iPhones can do the same with your Apple account. Very simple to setup and it saves a lot of hassle if you ever lose your phone :-) Photos are also another item that can be backed up easily. Using the Google Photos app, or even Microsoft OneDrive or Dropbox, these can be setup to upload your photos to the cloud immediately, or next time you have Wi-Fi access for your phone. I use both Dropbox and Google Photos so I never lose my precious memories. Text messages are another that can be backed up, apps like Sms backup and restore are free and can save your messages.

20.01.2022 Got a new PC and need to install all the essential apps and programs on it, but don't want to download them all, install them all one after the other... well there is a simple way. https://ninite.com/ On the site, you tick all the programs you want, then click "Get your Ninite". You download a single file that you run, and it will auto install all the programs you selected. So simple. I've used it a lot of times over the past few years and it's very handy to have. Even if it's just 2 or 3 programs, it saves a lot of time.

Please don't throw your computer out the window, I won't be able to fix THAT.

11.01.2022 Simply rebooting or power cycling a device or computer can fix most issues. If your phone, tablet, computer, laptop or even internet modem are playing up, disconnecting the power for a minute and connecting it again, can most of the time restart the device up fresh and fix some issues. Give it a go before calling tech support and spending a while on hold.

07.01.2022 Using screenshots is a great help to IT support staff and others to help understand what you are seeing. In windows you can press the PrtScrn button on your keyboard to copy a screenshot to the clipboard, then paste it into a word document. Even better is a screenshot program such as GreenShot which I have been using for many years. It allows you to crop the screenshot before or automatically saves and can save in many different formats. This software software is freeware. http://getgreenshot.org/ On Android phones usually Samsung, a combination of Volume Down and the Power button takes a screenshot and saves it to your photo gallery folder. Then you can early share it to an email etc.

02.01.2022 Got a new device? All excited about it? Great, lets see what this baby can do (Disclaimer, not a real baby). Let's install some cool flashy apps. Some Live Wallpaper, some cool widgets. Wow... so awesome. A few weeks later... "Man, this phone sucks... the battery only lasts a few hours.. I hate Apple/Samsung/HTC/LG/etc"... I'm not going to buy this brand again... Well.. wait a minute.... That's not what you said a few weeks ago?... What's going on here? Well, every app you install on your device takes away disk space and some memory as well if it runs in the background. All those widgets are always running if your phone is on. And those Live Wallpapers, while they look really cool, they do chew through your battery very quickly. Suddenly your brand new device, which had enough battery for 1-2 days, now only lasts a few hours. While having heaps of apps is cool, you need to remember that they can chew your battery quickly. Let's start with each area: Apps.... some apps can stay running in the background, sometimes sending data back to their server, or pushing notifications on an hourly basis (Sometimes even more frequent). This uses a lot of battery if it's quite often, as well as your precious data! Widgets... they are also running in the background because they are on your main screen. If you don't need them, remove and uninstall them. Live Wallpaper... yeah they look awesome but are a HUGE battery drain. Go for a static wallpaper, a photo of a loved one or that cool car you might never be able to afford. Also, darker wallpaper is less of a battery drain than bright wallpaper, as the screen uses less power to display the image. So there you go, by uninstalling those flashy apps that you only used for a few days, and getting rid of some widgets and wallpaper, your device should be able to last longer, as there is less drain on the battery. And while we're talking about batteries... DO NOT LET YOUR BATTERY DROP BELOW 30%....Every time you do this, a kitten dies... (Disclaimer, no kittens were harmed in the making of this post). But it does take some life away from your device's batteries. Most devices now have a Lithium Polymer battery, and if you let the battery drop below 30%, instead of having 2000 charge cycles in it's life, it will end up having 1 or 2 every time it happens. Some of my devices are 5 years old and the battery is still in good condition, but if you let it drop below 30% too often, you will find the battery will only last 1-2 years. Best is to charger your device as often as you can, keeping the device full whenever possible. Most devices have power saving, where it slows down the processor to a lower power usage after the battery hits 50%.
