03.01.2022 A big thank you to Mr Michael Ewer for hosting the inaugural Secondary Chess Competition. The students really enjoyed it ... here is the wrap up of the final from Mr Ewer ... enjoy the read! :-) The eagerly anticipated final of the 2020 NCC Chess Competition was played yesterday. Eli the Eliminator played Tristan the Titanium Titan to decide who would be crowned Champion. Both contestants had quietly progressed through each round without much brouhaha and here they were, liv...ing their dreams. Breaking away from the usual setting in the Library, these two goliaths of the game squared off in a more unconventional Chess Pit environment, surrounded by Year 12 enthusiasts and the aroma of hot chips. Some said they had prepared all year for this, whereas others said it has been a lifetime of preparation. In truth, being the inaugural NCC Chess Competition, it had only been four weeks. Nevertheless, it was game time. There was no holding back with both players making confident, bold, and open starts. Tristan seized the early initiative when he captured Eli’s wayward bishop which had broken ranks away from protection. To brace his defence, Eli performed a castle manoeuvre. The middle ground saw most of the subsequent action, with some positional play of the highest order. However, it would be Tristan to strike again. This time a loose pawn, on the right flank, right in front of Eli’s king. The taking of this lowly pawn was an ominous development. Without time to ponder, Tristan’s knight suddenly powers in from nowhere. The only move left was for Eli to sacrifice his queen and save his king. Tristan was looking imperious, as his bishop swooped in to add to Eli’s defensive woes. Eli countered with his rooks acting in unison, forcing Tristan’s prominent queen away. Eli’s defence was working, at least for the time being. Tristan’s attack paused so that he could regather his strength for another assault. The screw was about to be turned and Eli’s position was becoming increasingly uncomfortable. At this time, jovial verbal exchanges were made, in an attempt to distract Tristan’s focus. The Titanium Titan then proceeded to exhibit a relentless determination to strive to victory, as he reinforced his renewed queen led attack. This time there was no saving Eli’s king. The Eliminator had graced the competition and had achieved victory in every round, although this was to be one step too far. Tristan called Check Mate and the attack, the game, and the competition had come to a close. Rising from his chair, to stand triumphantly, Tristan claimed his deserved victory. Well done to all contestants, those who watched, and those who added their support along the way. I hope you all enjoyed this year’s Chess Competition. Until the pawns advance again, from the Pit Master, Mr Ewer.
