24.01.2022 At todays General Committee meeting the majority of Councillors offered support for the relocation of a 100 year old house from within the Character Precinct in Cooroy. This position was contrary to the recommendation of our professional planning and heritage staff (which I moved with the support of Crs Wilkie and Jurisivec) . This location has been earmarked for the adaptive re-use of character houses for medical premises since the 1992 Cooroy Development Control Plan. ...The current proposal is to remove the house and replace it with a modern medical premises that is more suited to modern coastal suburban development. To my knowledge this would be the first time a Council has agreed to the loss of an important house in this precinct since 1992. This video of the houses in the Cooroy Character Precinct along Maple Street highlights the elements that the Planning Scheme values and has successfully protected for decades. In the past many Cooroy residents have shared with me their desire to retain the country town character of Cooroy. If you're one of them, perhaps now is a good time to let my colleagues know your views. Today's meeting is only a recommendation to Thursday's Ordinary Meeting, where the final decision will be made.

19.01.2022 DO YOU DIG GARDENING ? With a bit of rain forecast its a good time to think about planting your vegies for summer. Like many I increased my vegie patch during lock down and recorded the process in case people new to gardening wanted to see how a lazy gardener does it. I don't dig! Over the years I have adapted the 'No Dig Garden' method developed by Esther Deans in the 1970s. All it takes is a little bit of compost (or good quality potting mix) to create planting rows, s...ome manure, lucerne and mulch of your choice. Did you know Noosa Library Service now has a seed bank? Need help or a place to grow? Council supports three community garddens at Peregian, Tewantin and Cooroy. Watch the video for their details. Other than the exercise and healthy food you produce, backyard gardening offers a range of other broader benfits. For example: Food Miles: Backyard - 20 metres; Farmers market: 100km; Supermarket : up to 15,000km. Covid Safe: Backyard: 1-2 pairs of hands; Farmers Market : up to about 5 sets of hands; Supermarket : around 15 sets of hands. Climate Action: If you turn your scraps into compost and reuse garden clippings as mulch, then you are also saving landfill gas (methane a powerful green emission) escaping to the atmosphere.

18.01.2022 ELECTIC VEHICLE EXPO -nential The Minister for Transport and Main Road Mark Bailey, together with the member for Noosa Sandy Bolton and Mayor Clare were on hand to open this year's Zero Emmissions Noosa's expo. Whether you were keen to find out about a scooter, bike, trike, car or bus you had lots to choose from. A great event by a committed group of volunteers.... The revolution in electric mobility has well and truly started and will grow exponentially over the next 10 years. Other than the nifty new E versons of motorbikes the charity group providing excursions to the elderly using adapted e-bikes were the stand out for me. The Draft Cycling and Walking Strategy is out for consultation and aims to plan for the future of active transport in the Shire. Have a look and let us know if it has gone far enough.

12.01.2022 IMAGES FROM COUNCIL'S COMMUNITY FACILITIES Councillors did a tour of community facilities today. Starting at the Pergian Digital Hub and ending at Regional Gallery. For something a little different I captured some of the art and images on display at each centre.

11.01.2022 COMMUNITY HAS SPOKEN - COUNCILLORS LISTENED - COOROY'S CHARACTER THE WINNER In a great show of community pride, social media pages and Councillors inboxes were overflowing with residents wanting to see Council uphold the provisions of the Cooroy Character Precinct in the Noosa Plan and support staff's recommendation not to remove a classic house from Maple St. To their credit three Councillors considered the sentiment and the well reasoned arguments of numerous professionals... and community representatives on our Heritage Working Group. From a 3-4 vote at Monday's General Committee to 6-1 at last night Ordinary Meeting it was a great example of local democracy at work. My thanks to all those who participated in the groundswell of support for retaining the character of our local town. Last night I took the opportunity to reignite my advocacy for a review of the Planning Scheme to look at other areas throughout the shire that may be well served by the expansion of our Character Precincts. Many in Pomona requested it during the last Planning Scheme review and places like Old Tewantin are crying out for it ( see the video in my 2017 post below).

11.01.2022 Infrastructure Services took Councillors for a whistle stop tour of the hinterland to look at some of the current works projects. From the grader crew at Tablelands Rd Cooran, to the staff member who has looked after the Botanic Gardens for over 30 years, it was great to have a chance for a quick chat with, and say thanks to, the 'doers in the organisation.

06.01.2022 CLIMATE COUNCIL REPORT - 75% REDUCTION NEEDED BY 2030 The Cities Power Partnership asked me and others To help communicate the call to action in the report. The SBS online article may be of interest.
