10.01.2022 Seed Cycling for Hormonal Balance Seed cycling is a simple practice that can assist women to balance their female reproductive hormones and boost their fert...ility. It’s a beautiful opportunity to get in touch with your menstrual cycle and recognize the magical ebbs and flows of your hormones. Along with checking cervical mucus and measuring basal body temperature, seed cycling is a lovely tool that any woman can use to take their female hormonal regulation into their own hands. The benefits of seed cycling are extremely subtle compared to the individualized liquid herbal tonics that I prescribe at Forever Fertile and Noosa Natural Medicine and should be considered as complementary to your fertility or female reproductive protocol. What Is Seed Cycling? Seed cycling means eating specific seeds during the two different phases of your menstrual cycle to encourage a healthy balance of your female reproductive hormones. How To Cycle Seeds: In the follicular phase (day 1 to 14) or from menstruation to ovulation of your menstrual cycle eat daily: 1 tablespoon of raw, ground flaxseeds (linseeds) 1 tablespoon of raw, ground pumpkin seeds The follicular phase of your cycle is from menstruation to ovulation and ideally coincides with the waxing moon (new moon to full moon). Flaxseeds and pumpkin seeds modulate estrogen. In the luteal phase (day 15 to 28) or from ovulation to menstruation of your menstrual cycle eat daily: 1 tablespoon of raw, ground sesame seeds 1 tablespoon of raw, ground sunflower seeds The luteal phase of your cycle is from ovulation to menstruation and ideally coincides with the waning moon (full moon to new moon). Sesame seeds and sunflower seeds boost progesterone. Ensure that your seeds are raw, organic and thoroughly ground up. You can use a coffee grinder. Add your ground seeds to a smoothie or salad, mix them into coconut yoghurt or quinoa porridge or make a pesto or seed butter. Who Can Cycle Seeds? All women can cycle seeds including breastfeeding mums and menopausal women. It’s not recommended for pregnant women. Women with hormonal dysfunction like PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids, amenorrhea, oligomenorrhea, dysmenorrhea or PMS will benefit most from seed cycling as it may help to balance female reproductive hormones and regulate cycles. If a woman isn’t menstruating such as during breastfeeding or menopause, it’s best to cycle seeds in accordance with the moon cycle. Follicular phase = waxing moon, luteal phase = waning moon. Why Do I Love These Seeds? Seeds are rich in essential fatty acids, protein, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants - all essential for egg development and the production and function of healthy female hormones. Flaxseeds or linseeds: contain phytoestrogenic plant constituents called lignans which modulate your endogenous estrogen levels. Modulation means that when you have excessive estrogen levels, flaxseeds can help to reduce estrogen whereas when your estrogen levels are too low, flaxseeds can help to boost estrogen. Clinical studies demonstrate that flaxseeds reduce excess estrogen levels by inhibiting aromatase activity which may improve female hormonal conditions associated with a hyperestrogenic state such as fibroids and endometriosis. Eating flaxseeds promotes ovulation and lengthens a shortened luteal phase. Additionally, flaxseeds contain inflammation-reducing omega 3 fatty acids which improve all female hormonal issues. Pumpkin seeds: are rich in vitamin K, iron, magnesium, phosphorus and manganese. Pepitas contain all 9 essential amino acids and healthy unsaturated fats. The lignans in pumpkin seeds have mildly estrogenic effects and promote the maturation of a primary oocyte into an egg capable of being fertilized. Pumpkin seeds are rich in zinc, an antioxidant that is crucial for female fertility, ovulation and early embryo development. Zinc may also reduce menstrual cramping. Sunflower Seeds: are rich in vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant which supports egg and embryo quality. Sunflower seeds contain selenium, another antioxidant which creates healthy ovarian follicles and protects against DNA damage. The potent combination of magnesium and vitamin b6 occurs in sunflower seeds which may help to alleviate PMS symptoms. These seeds are also high in essential fatty acids, protein, thiamine, manganese, phosphorus, copper and selenium. Sesame seeds: are an excellent source of antioxidants. They are rich in plant protein, vitamin E, magnesium, zinc, selenium, iron, copper and vitamins B1, B3 and B6. Sesame seeds contain lignans which assist in decreasing androgens and increasing sex hormone binding globulin thus regulating female hormonal levels. Sesame seeds are especially useful for improving declining hormones in postmenopausal women. If you wish to balance your female hormones or have a baby, I am a qualified medical herbalist, clinical nutritionist and kinesiologist specializing in female reproductive medicine and fertility. l would love to help you at Forever Fertile by Anne-Marie Corral
