23.01.2022 Having received a record number of entries, we are thrilled to announce the winner of this year’s Lyn McCrea Memorial Drawing Prize! Artist Anh Nguyen has won the 2020 Lyn McCrea Memorial Drawing Prize for her self portrait titled, Green Coat. This year’s judge, the celebrated artist, Michael Zavros, made the following remarks about the quality of the entries he reviewed and his process for selecting a winner;... "It's an honour to judge this year's prize and I'm just so impressed by not only the quality of the works entered but by the diversity of the entrants. In an age defined by digital technologies drawing remains as vital to us today as it was to our forefathers making marks on cave walls. I'd like to say that I was particularly impressed by some of the realism entered. There are some truly beautifully rendered works in this exhibition of finalists. When I judge a prize I try to remove any parameters to my assessment of the work, attempting to put aside my own interests, politics, tastes. The shortlist and finally the winning work emerges because I keep looking at it. It's as simple as that. It asks me to look again and again and then I try to understand why. The winning drawing by Anh Nguyen is an arresting self portrait. Perhaps drawn from a photograph or a mirror, the subject sits at a table dwarfed by her studio and surrounding apparatus. It's an unusual composition, the figure just left of centre regarding us impassively, one half of her face completely in shadow. There is a joy to the drawing gesture here. Oil pastel, charcoal and watercolour or a wash combine to deliver a rich gestural surface echoing the studio itself and its myriad media. But this isn't careful rendering, Nguyen delivers more with less. It’s a spare and immediate drawing." - Michael Zavros Congratulations to Anh and to all of our wonderful finalists! 21.01.2022 ‘Process, material and place are traits that are central to my studio practice including ceramics and printmaking. Regarding my printmaking discipline, local iron, rich clays in bright warm hues, thick carbon cakes of ash layers, iron sand, fine ash from wood kilns and finds such as shimmering decayed granite serve as pigments for prints pulled from carved or layered printing plates. The prints are often about society and humanity, and focus on the qualities of raw materials ...and connection to people and place’ - Jennifer Halli FLAME PATH Now showing until 11 July 2021 Image: Jennifer Halli, Stockpile ll 2021, wood ash, iron, sand and terracotta printed on Thai Koro paper, 29 x 21cm.

16.01.2022 The Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) Children’s Art Centre and Regional Services are delighted to present the interactive exhibition ‘Now is the Time Kids on Tour’ for children and families in regional and remote Queensland. This touring exhibition has been adapted from the Children’s Art Centre exhibition ‘Now is the Time’ by acclaimed Australian artist Raquel Ormella. Raquel Ormella is an Australian artist who uses textile, video and drawing to make ...art about environmental and social issues. Her artworks often resemble protest materials and include elements such as flags, banners and slogans. Raquel is particularly concerned about climate change and its effect on young people. ‘Now is the Time’ was inspired by children around the world who have been calling for government action on climate change, sometimes protesting peacefully during school hours. ‘Now is the Tine’ invites children to speak up about climate change and the environment through a range of hands-on activities exploring the theme of protest. ‘Now is the Time Kids on Tour’ is a free entry exhibition and arts activity for children of all ages available at Noosa Regional Gallery until March 21.
