23.01.2022 'VERY SLIM' CHANCE OF HAIL STORM STRIKING SUNSHINE COAST THIS AFTERNOON See local forecast at bottom The Bureau of Meteorology is warning there is a slim c...hance the Sunshine Coast could be struck by a significant hailstorm this afternoon. The forecast says thunderstorms are possible later today, but the Bureau of Meteorology says is an 'off chance' that it could evolve into a hail storm. Forecaster Peter Markworth says if that did happen, the hail would likely strike inland areas of the region, but could reach the coast. "If those storms do get organised, which is still just a slight possibility, they may have an impact and there may be some warnings out," he said. "Those would include damaging winds and large hail which is greater than 2cm." He said while there was a 40% chance of storms on the Coast today , the risk of a hail storm would be "less than 5%". "It's a pretty harsh environment for one of these storms to get up, so most of the thunderstorms that do appear will be fairly benign -- just a little bit of lightning and a little bit of rain." "But there is potential for something more significant to get organised. "It's just a slight possibility but we can't rule it out." In November last year the Sunshine Coast endured a "catastrophic" hailstorm that caused more than $40 million in damage to vehicles, and buildings. FORECAST FOR THURSDAY Sunshine Coast: Partly cloudy. Medium (40%) chance of showers in the late morning and afternoon. Up to 2mm possible. The chance of a thunderstorm during this afternoon and evening. Light winds becoming northeasterly 15 to 20 km/h in the middle of the day then becoming light in the evening Gympie: Partly cloudy. Medium (40%) chance of showers in the late morning and afternoon. The chance of a thunderstorm during this afternoon and evening, possibly severe. Light winds becoming northeasterly 15 to 20 km/h in the late afternoon then becoming light in the evening. In November last year, a catastrophic hail storm caused more than $40 million in damage across the region. There is a slim chance of a hail storm striking the region this afternoon. He fought in the Second World War, and at the age of 100, he did what he could to raise much needed funds for the British NHS. I’m sure I speak for the entire P&DWW team when I issue my condolences to the family of Sir Thomas and to the United Kingdom as a whole.... RIP Sir Tom. Nathanael Ford, FRSA Director.

14.01.2022 POLICE ACT TO BACK LOCKDOWN Police will stop some vehicles travelling to the Sunshine Coast from Brisbane to enforce new lockdown orders that come into ef...fect tonight. The State Government has ordered a three-day lockdown from 6pm of the Greater Brisbane region, covering the Brisbane, Moreton Bay, Redland, Ipswich, and Logan city council areas. People within those areas are required to stay at home unless needing to leave for essential work, providing healthcare for a vulnerable person, essential shopping, or exercise in their local neighbourhood. Anyone elsewhere in the state who has visited Greater Brisbane since January 2 has also been asked to self-isolate for three days. Superintendent Craig Hawkins from Sunshine Coast police said there would be an increased police presence at access points between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast to support the lockdown so the situation that Brisbane sees itself in doesn't migrate up to up to the Sunshine Coast. We're not enforcing roadblocks but we have a system that will be intercepting vehicles as we recognize that they might be a Brisbane resident or coming from the Greater Brisbane area, Supt Hawkins said. As well as stopping cars, Supt Hawkins said message boards on the Bruce Highway between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast would display reminders of the need for people to self-isolate if they come from the Greater Brisbane region. Acting Sunshine Coast Mayor Rick Baberowski said the Coast was fortunate to be outside the lockdown zone, but good will and discipline were needed to keep it that way. I hope that everybody will pay the best attention they can to the directions, and obviously, if you are thinking about coming to the Sunshine Coast, and you've been in one of the declared Greater Brisbane areas, please don't do it, he said.
14.01.2022 The times for tonight’s eclipse. Enjoy!

04.01.2022 **This bushfire warning is no longer current please refer to the QFES Facebook page for updated information** PREPARE TO LEAVE: Kingfisher Bay Resort and Villa...ge (part of the K’gari, Fraser Island bushfire) as at 1.20pm Tue 1 Dec Bushfire warning level: WATCH AND ACT Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) advises there is a bushfire near the Kingfisher Bay Resort and Village on K’gari (Fraser Island) and conditions could get worse. There is a separate warning for residents on K'gari (Fraser Island). Residents should refer to this warning for further information. Any person at the Kingfisher Bay Resort and Village should follow the directions of Queensland Fire and Emergency Service or Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service officers. You need to be ready to follow your bushfire survival plan. If you do not have a plan, or intend to leave, you should be ready to leave the area because the situation could get worse quickly. Currently as at 1.20pm Tuesday 1 December, a bushfire is travelling from Boon Boon Creek south towards the Kingfisher Bay Resort and Village. Extensive waterbombing is continuing to slow the spread of the fire. Fire crews are working to contain the fire but firefighters may not be able to protect every property. You should not expect a firefighter at your door. People in the area will be affected by smoke, which will reduce visibility and air quality. Call Triple Zero (000) immediately if you believe your property is under threat. WHAT YOU SHOULD DO: Listen to your local radio station or visit the Rural Fire Service (RFS) website for regular updates. If you have a bushfire survival plan, finalise it now so you are ready to follow it. If you do not have a bushfire survival plan, or if your plan is to leave, identify where you will go if you leave the area. Advise family and friends of your plan. Close windows and doors to minimise smoke exposure. If you suffer from a respiratory condition, keep your medication close by. Drive with caution in low visibility conditions. Contact your neighbours to see if they need help preparing for the bushfire. Pack important documents and essential items (e.g., passports, birth certificates, prescription medication, food and water, and protective clothing) in case you need to leave the area. Put on protective clothing (e.g., a long-sleeved cotton shirt, boots with thick soles). Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Bring pets inside; restrain them with a leash, a cage, or inside a secure room; and provide them with plenty of water. Take action to protect your livestock. Move flammable materials such as doormats, wheelie bins, and outdoor furniture away from your house. Fill containers such as your bath, sinks, and buckets with water so you have access to drinking water and firefighting water. Close windows and doors, sealing the gaps under doors and screens with wet towels to keep smoke out of the house. KEEP UP TO DATE BY: Following QFES on Facebook (@QldFireandEmergencyServices) and Twitter (@QldFES) Staying tuned to your local radio station. Find your local ABC radio station at https://radio.abc.net.au/help/offline and your local commercial radio station at http://www.commercialradio.com.au/find-a-station/queensland; Visiting the Rural Fire Service (RFS) website at www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au/map FURTHER INFORMATION: For bushfire preparation tips, visit the RFS website: www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au/BushFire_Safety For information about road closures, call 13 19 40 or visit www.qldtraffic.qld.gov.au The next update will be provided by 3.20pm or if the situation changes.

01.01.2022 The fire destruction of K’gari (Fraser Island) is hard to comprehend. Please head across to Save Fraser Island Dingos FaceBook page and show your support. Thi...s was a deliberately lit, illegal fire. No one can go though another season of our country burning. Be fire smart. Report any suspicious activity. Be vigilant. Australia will take decades to recover from the fires at the end of last year through to February this year. The loss of wildlife? Populations may never recover.
01.01.2022 Survey Monkey results! Good afternoon every, and thank you to those that participated in the anonymous yearly survey! We are especially glad to hear that all of the respondents were quite happy with our efforts. As a response to a couple of questions received in the survey, Facebook does limit what posts are seen by our followers based on your level of interaction with us (liking, commenting & Sharing). That unfortunately cannot be helped.... The other question/comment received was regarding the logo. It was suggested a more modern and recognisable logo be used. So this newer one has been knocked together and its now up for a community vote! To explain the designs, the current design is a 'P' for Pomona surrounded by a storm and the new proposal is a standardised/simplified symbol for a cyclone. Like this post if you prefer the new fresh and modern design or Love this post if you prefer the current design.
