24.01.2022 Last Friday, on 6 of November, we were lucky enough to be able to welcome Jandamarra Cadd to give a presentation at school. This event kicked off NAIDOC week, which had been officially moved from July to November this year due to COVID-19. Jandamarra Cadd is a nationally renowned Aboriginal Artist, his artworks combining both traditional aboriginal art techniques and signature contemporary portraiture, creating unique and incredible masterpieces. Within his presentation, he... showcased his art whilst telling his eye-opening story. Every student that attended left with knowledge and inspiration, definitely a presentation to be remembered. It was wonderful seeing so many students excited to listen and learn, especially being one of the largest cultural events within the school since lockdown, and it was a wonderful way to start it. A big thank you to Jandamarra for giving up his time to share his experiences, to the teachers who gave up their lunch break to help supervise and to the many students who came to listen. Thanks Elizabeth Delley and Zach Hughes Cultural Captains

The boys were mentored one-on-one by Strength Potential over a six week period and taken through the six-session RAGE Program with teacher Dave Tomba and Youth Support Coordination Heidi Campbell. Strength Potential culminated in a final session with the students’ mentors reading out a letter they wrote to their student. These ten boys and some Year 9 boys were selected to participate in a two week Well-Being Program delivered by the Game and Community Development Officer for the Brisbane Broncos Rugby League Club Darren Burns. Mr Burns speaks to the students about personal brand, relationships and careers with a league twist. The students and staff involved in Achilles look forward to the celebration of their progress and success this year, which will be held from 12pm to 1pm on Friday, October 30 at Noosa Botanical Gardens, Lake MacDonald. 20.01.2022 CHRISTMAS CONVOY CONNECTS NOOSA A festive convoy of Christmas cheer will come to life over four nights through Noosa this December. The Connecting Noosa Christmas Convoy aims to bring the Christmas spirit to local families and recognise the efforts of our emergency services following one of the most challenging 12 months.... It’s so exciting to be able to bring the festive cheer to the front yards of our residents, Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart said. The convoy is an initiative of Noosa Council with the support of Noosa’s local emergency services. Corporate partners HOT91 and Cricks Noosa have also jumped onboard. Cr Stewart said the convoy aims to spread the Christmas cheer in a COVIDSafe way in what’s been a challenging year. It’s unfortunate that many of the regular community Christmas events can’t go ahead due to the pandemic restrictions, but hopefully this will ensure we can all enjoy the Christmas spirit with our neighbours and family, Cr Stewart said. The convoy runs from Monday December 7 to Thursday December 10. Maps of the routes are available on Council’s website and will be promoted via Council’s social media channels and HOT91. https://www.noosa.qld.gov.au/christmas-convoy The convoy starts in Boreen Point and Cooroibah on Monday night December 7 and moves to Kin Kin, Cooran, Pomona and Cooroy on Tuesday. It travels through parts of Tewantin on Wednesday December 10, followed by the beachside suburbs of Peregian, Castaways and Sunrise Beach on Thursday afternoon December 11. Noosa Police Inspector Ben Carroll said it’s a thrill to be involved in such a unique COVIDSafe event. We jumped at the chance to be part of the convoy because it’s a wonderful way to celebrate Christmas with our community, he said. Our officers and all emergency service providers have been tested through last year’s bushfires and during the pandemic shutdown.

09.01.2022 NDSHS Geography students communicate with the BoM Noosa District State High School Year 12 Geography students were thrilled to hear from the Bureau of Meteorology Senior Meteorologist Diane Eadie yesterday. Ms Eadie responded to the students’ weather-related questions in great depth and detail. Year 12 student Lauren Hall asked why Australia is severely affected by La Nia and El Nio, with Ms Eadie explaining that this is due to the fact Australia is heavily influenced by s...ea surface temperatures. Warmer water equates to more moisture in the atmosphere, which leads to a greater potential for rain, Ms Eadie said. The students were also interested to learn how the BoM predicts the time and location of cyclones. The presence of certain tropical waves (Madden-Julian Oscillation, Kelvin Waves, Mixed Rossby-Gravity Waves) can have an effect on the monsoon. When the monsoon is active, there is an increased likelihood of tropical cyclone development, Ms Eadie said. The students were relieved to learn that the BoM do not expect to see a bushfire season as severe as last season. Eastern Australia is less likely to see prolonged and widespread fire activity like we saw last season. That being said, even one bad day can have devastating impacts, and conditions remain dry in the west, Ms Eadie said. Lauren Hall also asked whether a cyclone could be named in her honour. Ms Eadie said there are many requests from members of the public and it could take over 50 years before a name is allocated. Those who would like to have a name suggested are to submit a written request (including the pronunciation) of the name to: Manager Tropical Cyclone and Extreme Weather, Bureau of Meteorology, GPO Box 1289, Melbourne, VIC, 3001. Ms Eadie said her favourite aspect of working at the BoM is that she watches the weather all day. Meteorology is an evolving science, and we don’t have all the answers that means I am constantly learning new things and being amazed by phenomenon that I haven’t seen before, Ms Eadie said. Another important benefit of working at the BoM that Ms Eadie noted was that she is always the one who remembers to bring an umbrella when all of my friends forget and get caught in the rain. The Year 12 Geography class found the exchange with the BoM to be fascinating and appreciated the time Ms Eadie took to answer their questions

04.01.2022 Congratulations Jessica! Jessica Creevey has been awarded 2nd place in the Queensland History Teachers’ Association competition for 2020. Jessica investigated The Battle of One Tree Hill - a successful resistance campaign staged on the outskirts of Toowoomba by First Nations groups in 1843. This is a fascinating chapter in Queensland’s history, because it tells the story of how Aboriginal strategy and ingenuity could halt the influx of white pastoralists. For this task Jessic...a devised inquiry questions; wrote a rationale; carefully selected historical sources (which she analysed and evaluated); and composed a critical summary of her conclusions. This source investigation is insightful, nuanced and sophisticated. Jessica has demonstrated an academic ability comparable to a university level and is to be commended for her independent inquiry and diligence. Well done Jess. Noosa High is proud of your achievement.

04.01.2022 Huge congratulations to former Noosa High student, Jake Friend on his State Of Origin debut for the winning Queensland Maroons last night. Jake graduated in 2007 and represented the school in Rugby League (of course), Touch, and Athletics in each of the five years he was here. He also was selected in the Queensland and Australian Schoolboys teams as an U15 and U18 schoolboy, having played for Sunshine Coast at State Carnivals. His is a great example of dedication, hard work ...and persistence after being behind Cameron Smith for so long. Go Queensland!! (With the help of a Noosa High boy!) 03.01.2022 Recently, I had the privilege and pleasure to take the newly-elected School Leaders Year 11 School Leaders on camp to Mimburi. The main purposes of the camp were to get to know and trust each other via numerous challenges and to plan for a busy 2021. We problem-solved and received advice on how to deal with the additional responsibilities when undertaking such an important role in the school as a leader. The students were also challenged physically and mentally in team ch...allenges demonstrating excellent teamwork when solving climbing problems and co-ordinating obstacles. Then the students shared stories around the fire and during meal breaks. I have no doubt that this keen group of leaders will continue our very high standards of student leadership. I would like to welcome the incoming School Leaders for 2021 and thank them for their efforts at the leadership camp. The 2021 School Leaders are: Ella Wilkinson School Captain Ceri Bright School Captain Grace Hehir School Vice-Captain Keely Long School Vice-Captain Zach Hughes Cultural Captain Elizabeth Delley Cultural Captain Tom Sparks Sport Captain Zarli Greentree Sport Captain Zane Springall Student Council President Eryn Newton-Brown Student Council Secretary Bianca Grau Interact Club President Sofie Byrne Interact Club Secretary Thanks Mr Gordon HOD Learning Enhancement

01.01.2022 Last Friday NDSHS competed at the Annette Brander Rugby League Gala within the Year 7 & 8 division. The girls had a fantastic day with many playing their first game of Rugby League. The team proudly represented NDSHS on and off the field and this was highlighted by another team’s coach: We played against the NDSHS girls in the Annette Branders competition. It was a game played in great spirit and ended in a draw. Unfortunately, as is the nature of a contact sport, we sustained a couple of injuries towards the end. The caring and compassion shown by the NDSHS girls, both as the injuries occurred and after the game, was a powerful testament to the fine young women they are."
