23.01.2022 Hoodies depend on our beautiful Aussie beaches for survival. They have no alternative place to live. If we keep our beaches pristine, we hold on to life in and above the sand! Sand, surf and Plovers forever!

22.01.2022 Levy’s Beach in Warrnambool is a sacred burial site of traditional owners. But it’s under threat racehorse training could be allowed to go ahead on the site w...here many including babies are dreaming. I was privileged to deliver a message stick on behalf of traditional owners to the Premier, asking him to meet them on country. They are respectfully waiting for his reply. I hope he will take up the offer.

19.01.2022 Serious clout: Top-gun academic Dr John Sherwood, from Deakin University, is preparing a report on the Levy's Beach area which has been earmarked for large-scal...e racehorse training. Dr Sherwood, a member of the State Government's new Marine and Coastal Council and the 2017 Warrnambool City Council Citizen of the Year, has been keeping a quiet eye on the plan to allow up to 160 racehorses a day into what is part of the Belfast Coastal Reserve. Dr Sherwood is now looking closely into the so-called "Hoon Hill" area, which has been woefully under-researched in terms of its potential environmental and cultural importance. Respected local ecologist Jodie Honan is also preparing a report on the plants and animals in the area, because - once again - we don't really know what is there. Despite this gaping hole in the data, the Warrnambool City Council and State Government intend to allow up to 120 racehorses a day on the beach and 40 a day on the dunes, five days a week, from November. As you do...in a coastal reserve. Both reports have been commissioned by the Belfast Coastal Reserve Action Group which, as we know, has been fighting commercial racehorse training on beaches for almost four years now. Dr Sherwood entering this issue is, to me, monumental because he comes with decades of experience and a tonne of respect. His most recent work, in case you have been hiding in a cupboard, gained international attention after it raised the possibility of humans living at Moyjil/Point Richie in Warrnambool up to 120,000 years ago - 50,000 years longer than previously thought. I will be fascinated to see his and Jodie's reports. Image: Deakin University Research.

13.01.2022 NEW: Next Monday night's council meeting is a critical one. It will see a vote on whether to allow racehorse training at Levy's Beach, but, more importantly, it... will be a test of our true respect for Indigenous culture. Is the Warrnambool City Council ready to listen? https://www.the-terrier.com.au/racehorses-respecting-count/

12.01.2022 In South West Victoria, Traditional Owners have set up a ‘resistance camp’ in the dunes at Levy’s Beach, near Warrnambool, to protest the Victorian State government’s approval of industrial scale racehorse training that will see 160 racehorses a day trampling through culturally and environmentally sensitive beaches and dunes. Tell Daniel Andrews and the Warrnambool City Council we say ‘nay’ to racehorses on beaches Contact the Premier: ... 03 9561 5000 [email protected] & Warrnambool Mayor Tony Herbert: 0427 669 760 [email protected] #noracehorsesonbeaches @noracehorsesonbeaches www.noracehorsesonbeaches.com.au

11.01.2022 MORE RACEHORSES TO RETURN TO SOUTH-WEST BEACHES? West Australian horseman Lindsey Smith Racing Stables says he won't takeover disqualified trainer Darre...n Weir's Warrnambool stables unless Warrnambool City Council can arrange increased beach access for trainers. Smith has applied for a Victorian Trainers Licence, but says a planned move east wouldn't be viable unless trainers are granted increased access to the beaches. Smith says Warrnambool City Council is working to help. "There's a council meeting in a couple of weeks to get the numbers changed back up to 70 per morning where at the moment it's 50," Smith said. "Because it's such an expensive move for me, I can't come all this way over with restrictions on the beach." But Warrnambool City Council says it hasn't received a request to amend access. In a statement, a council spokesman said, "There are no plans to apply to (for) changes to the number of racehorses on beaches at the next Council meeting". Smith is a multiple Group 1-winning trainer in Perth, and has previously stabled horses in Warrnambool with Darren Weir. It was announced last week that he intended to take over Weir's Warrnambool operation, after it was purchased for an undisclosed amount by a mystery buyer. Smith was adamant that he wouldn't take over the stables at Warrnambool racetrack unless improved beach access was granted. "It's not the same then - it's not the same environment that all them winners come out of," he said. "I'm big on systems, and I know that system worked. "I'm just trying to take advantage of a system where, with someone's bad management, I was just going to try and copy some of his methods." Smith confirmed he hopes to run a satellite stable in Warrnambool initially, but said he would not offer Jarrod McLean, Weir's ex-foreman and a trainer in his own right, a position. 08.01.2022 Will Dan Andrews meet with traditional owners at Levy's Beach before it is too late? I hope so. Today I read in a motion that reminds him they have been camping there since January in opposition to racehorses training on and decimating their sacred burial site.

06.01.2022 A big shout out to Zephlyn Taylor- Greens Candidate For Wannon for meeting with the Traditional Owners and concerned community groups at Levy’s Beach today to d...iscuss the issues surrounding the commercial training of racehorses on the dunes and beaches of the Belfast Coastal Reserve. An important part of being a political candidate is to listen to the people of the electorate and yesterday Zephlyn did just that. She came and sat on country and she listened. Thank you. #saveourbeaches #communityvoices

04.01.2022 It was an honour to ask a question to Dan Andrews on behalf of Uncle Rob Lowe today. Today was the last day of the Warrnambool Racing Carnival and members of pa...rliament have put on the record that they would have been there if it were not for the sitting week change. But still nobody has been to visit the aboriginal community at Levy’s Beach, which is also in Warrnambool, who are camping in protest at racehorses being trained on their sacred site. Levy’s Beach is a burial ground for our First Nations people, there are countless bodies dreaming there, including those of young babies. Elders invited the Premier to meet on country and talk about their concerns and tell him the site’s history. They made this invitation via a message stick, which I personally delivered. I hope The Premier will take up their request to meet on country.

03.01.2022 "A lot of people don't know about the true value of this area, they look at it and think it's just dunes, plenty of tea tree, plenty of sand. But it's not what's on the dunes, it's what's below them,’ Please listen.. Dan Andrews

02.01.2022 "The issue is important to me because of my ancestor's remains that are all through these dunes and landscapes here. The bones, the remains, the middens,"

01.01.2022 The 22km Mahogany Ship beach walk from #IAMWarrnambool to #IAMPortFairy passes the last known resting place of the elusive Mahogany Ship, thought to be a Portug...uese caravel that was wrecked in the early 1500s. It later vanished under drifting sands in the 1890s. The area is also home to echidnas, rare hooded plovers, mutton birds and crested terns. In winter or spring, you might even glimpse a southern right whale. For shorter walks, enter the region at one of several access points along the way.
