22.01.2022 If you have a fear of public speaking, then I highly recommend you, watch this new video. Speaking in front of people is one of the most effective ways to communicate your message to mass audiences. This is one of the best ways to grow your business and build authority within a marketplace.... But the phobia is real. Speaking in front of people is one of the biggest phobias in the world. But it’s also one of the easiest to overcome. PM Noranda Toastmasters for more skills and tips. https://www.harveker.com/tagr/fear-of-public-speaking/

17.01.2022 All of us should have mentors and it is our mentors who guide us through our journey through Toastmasters, some for the very first time whilst others are continuing. They are there to celebrate our milestones and more importantly there when we need them. Mentors don’t get the recognition they deserve so during the month of November why not contact your mentor and simply say Thank you for being my mentor. You could do more of course but that is up to you.... In District 17 we have many wonderful mentors who go beyond their role to ensure their protégé’s develop and improve in their Communication and Leadership Skills. Mentors provide us with support, encouragement, knowledge, inspiration and many more. I am aware of some mentors that meet their protégé outside meeting hours even on weekends and on telephone calls late at night. Without mentors by our side we would be lost, and it would be far too easy to simply give up. In my opinion a strong Toastmaster’s Mentoring Program will assist all clubs in maintaining stability within their membership. Mentors and protégé will stay at the club longer to continuing their journey TOGETHER. So, your club should have a Mentoring Program, and If not, then you should start one immediately and you will see the positive difference for the members and the club itself I am sure most of you will have some wonderful stories/memories to tell us about your mentors. I put a challenge to all of us to write an article, with photos if you have them, and tell us why your mentor is so special to you and submitted to the Black Swan for the December issue. Let’s all give our mentors the recognition they richly deserve. To my own personal mentors Ian Pickens and Robyn Richards, I would start by saying thank you to you both for supporting and believing in me. I would not have been where I am without your guidance and assistance. Henry Yau, DTM District Director District 17, Toastmasters International

17.01.2022 Setting Goals Amidst Uncertainty With all that is unknown, making resolutions and leading with goals becomes even more critical. By Renée Covino... We were still in the middle of a pandemic when 2021 arrived, that much is certain. Are we clear about anything else? Despite the looming uncertainty, setting goals is still a powerful new-year leadership toolperhaps more so this year than evernot to just maintain your team’s productivity and energy, but also to save your sanity as the person many will be looking up to. So, while leaders should still think about making resolutions and outlining goals for the upcoming months, they may want to think about the steps a little bit differently. Here is a quick compilation of expert advice for setting goals during these unprecedented times: First, do not get hung up on what was not achieved in 2020. Thankfully, that year is overand with it, went countless aspirations and agendas. And that’s okay. Start this year with gratitude and pride. You are one year older and many years wiser after surviving a very difficult year. Use what you learned and the changes that took place in your workplace, clubs, and personal life to help shape your new or renewed goals as a leader. List what was achieved in 2020and smile. When you put 2020’s accomplishments down on paper, you will probably be surprised at what was achieved. List everything you can think of that contributed to your team’s survivalwe learned how to conduct meetings and support one another on Zoomcounts. Ask yourself some fun questions. What did you find yourself enjoying more last year than you expected to? What new skills did you learn or discover? What did people ask you to door pay you to dodifferently than before? How do you see yourself incorporating these answers into this year’s goals? Keep trying. For those goals that did not come to fruition last year, or were only partly resolved, decide if they should be incorporated into this year’s roster. There is no failure when you keep trying a different way to move forward. Write your goals down and make them visible. Perhaps even use one or two as your online meeting background! Having goals on display can be a great conversation starter for you to help others achieve their goals and for them to contribute to your goal success, too. Apply the SMART goal strategy. SMART goals still apply in these times; they are: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely. Using this method to set goals ensures they are clear, attainable, and meaningful. Following this methodology will lead to more success in following through and accomplishing more, even in this very uncertain year. Re-evaluate your goals monthly. Volatile times call for constant measures. This is not the year you can set goals and forget them. Gather feedback from team members on a regular basis. Get everyone involved in the goals and adjust where you can. Listen to your team. Trust your instincts.

16.01.2022 Would you like to give a speech without notes, or at least with very few notes? Memorizing your speech word for word is not only difficult, it can result in a stilted style or in completely forgetting what you are going to say. While it is a good idea to memorize your first sentence or two, and your lastto tie down the ends of your speechmemorizing a speech word for word rarely is worth the effort. As a professional speaker and presentation coach, I tell my clients, Don’t... memorize. Internalize. I first heard that phrase years ago from the 2001 World Champion of Public Speaking, Darren LaCroix. Internalizing a speech works well for most people as a three-step process. Step 1: Create memorable content. Step 2: Practice the content without being concerned about delivery. Step 3: Incorporate gestures and space out your practice.
