25.01.2022 Gut Microbiome Composition is Associated with Age and Memory Performance in Pet Dogs The intestinal tract affects the brain through metabolites produced by gut...-inhabiting bacteria. In this study, we show that the number of errors the dogs commit in a short-term memory test and also their age is linked to the gut microbiome composition. The proportion of Fusobacteria is lower in older animals. Dogs with better memory performance (i.e., fewer mistakes) have relatively fewer Actinobacteria in their fecal samples collected right after the behavior test. This result is in agreement with the high abundance of some Actinobacteria in the gastrointestinal tract of persons living with Alzheimer’s disease. Links between memory performance and gut microbiota have been reported on rodents but not on dogs before. The research opens up new venues in canine aging and neurodevelopmental research. 24.01.2022 So it turns out these two reactive dogs could not care less about the dogs behind the fence in the off leash dog park, every session we're learning something new about these two, and their triggers. #mixbreed #reactivedog #norauscanineservices #dogtraining #townsville #tropicalliving
23.01.2022 Very well said!
23.01.2022 Canine Best Practice | Canine language Another great video on the natural wolf (Canis Lupus) body language which their cousins, our house wolves also share and ...many of us still strive to understand. We can learn so much from our brother wolf if we just take the time to observe with an open and learning mind. Great comment from Roger Abrantes Thanks for posting, Serena. That is a beautiful clip, an excellent illustration of canine language and group living (here in Canis lupus lupus). I’ve seen the same, with only subtle variations, in all canines, including Canis lupus familiaris. Note that the cubs do not show any fear of the ‘big’ adult or its teeth. Instead, following displays of ‘active submissive’ behavior, they repeatedly offer what we call ‘passive submissive’ behavior. At this stage, it doesn’t even make much sense to speak of ‘submissive’ behavior. It’s not primarily a demonstration of submissiveness. It’s more an eagerness to be accepted, to be reassured of the adult’s self-control, to bond. That is the test I describe otherwhere, to which youngsters submit the adults. An adult fails this test if (1) one doesn’t care, (2) one hurts the youngsters. Note also at the end, after the adult said, Enough! and leaves (I’d better go and wash the car) that the cubs follow him. They wouldn’t if they were afraid of him, didn’t trust him, didn’t need him. Healthy domestic dogs show the same behavioral patterns (I have hours of footage from my team’s research in the 1980s confirming that). However, based on ignorance and misinterpretations, human interference often disrupts their natural behavior, with dire consequences following. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SsVnKep1y7o
22.01.2022 One for my fellow geeks out there. :)
21.01.2022 Here is a quote from my colleague Dr. Anabela Pinto-Poulton, from our online course Animal Welfare that we are extensively updating at the moment. Please, com...ment and discuss from a scientific point of view only (e.g., animal welfare, ethology, psychology, ethics, aesthetics, economics). When needed, do not forget to indicate references so we all may become a bit wiser. :-) See more
21.01.2022 We all want our dogs to be healthy, and to have the right balance of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids in the food we feed our dogs. But are commercial dog foods a good... source for this, and are packing labels correctly stating what nutrients the food actually contains? Dr. Linda Case's research tells us it is not. Sure glad I add real sardines to the dog's meals every day! See more

17.01.2022 Spent some time with this lovely young lady this morning, Roxy needs a bit of help to figure out how to safely navigate this big, scary ol'e world of ours. Remember, dogs don't see the world the way we humans do, so it's important that we recognise and understand what's going on when they tell us that they're a bit unsure and uncomfortable. #blacklabmix #reactivedog #norauscanineservices #dogtraining #behaviourassessment #townsville

09.01.2022 I'll just leave this here for you all to ponder. Some will get what I'm hinting to, some will not, and some will reject it as it does not conform to their belief system, which is emotionally based. ;) "Animals are more consistent in their rational behaviour than humans, who behave much more emotionally."... "Pet owners only have to look at their pets and register how often they show emotional behaviour versus the number of times they, themselves, allow their emotions to control their behaviour." Dr Roger Abrantes, PhD. Evolutionary Biology and Ethology Ethology Institute Cambridge
08.01.2022 ... In the last 24 hours a NSW woman walking her dog on lead in an on lead shopping area. Another dog off lead rushed over, ...attacks the dog and another dog runs over and joins in. The ladies fingers were partially amputated in the attack and it is unclear if the dog attacked has been killed. The two attacking dogs have been seized. When this happens it’s a very important reminder what responsible pet ownership is about: . . . . . My thoughts are with all involved. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHQigPv6RKc&feature=share
08.01.2022 Here's a look around our shop - everything you see is available online at www.muzzletomuscle.com.au/shop We realise we are very hard to pin down these days (it'...s lovely being busy!) - it's not too often we are in the shop waiting for you to 'just drop in'. This is because there is only ever one of us here at a time (either Jo or Teegin) and unless you catch us on our lunch break, we are most often always with a client. But... fear not! When you check out in our online store - there is a local pickup option. We can have your order ready by the end of the day you place it, and guide you to our pick up point on site once your order is ready and waiting, easy! There's always a postage option as well so if you're not in Townsville, we can post directly to you!

07.01.2022 Little bit of what we did at the shop this afternoon. You'll notice that the handler is using food during the first exercise, however, they are now at the stage where this really isn't necessary nor required. In this instance the treat pouch had become a security blanket for the handler, a crutch if you will. So I "confiscated" the treat pouch and had the team repeat the last heeling exercise without using a single piece of food.... Trust yourself and trust your dog. See for yourself how that worked out. ;) If your trainer tells you that you need to carry treats with you wherever you go with the dog, as the dog will otherwise not do what's required - well, guess what - your dog is not trained! And yes, this is the advice given to some of my clients by their previous trainer(s). :(

05.01.2022 Yup ,dogs are not the only ones doing great work in the world of scent detection. My tutor in scent detection at the Ethology Institute, Prof.Roger Abrantes, trained over many years both dogs and rats to do this type of work. :)

03.01.2022 Strawberry literally rotted from the inside out so her puppies could be sold in a West Australian pet store. She was only 10 months old when she died alone in... a concrete puppy farm cage. We can’t let her death be in vain - we need justice for her and the countless other dogs condemned to puppy factories. Join us at the West Australian Parliament TOMORROW to show your support for the Stop Puppy Farming Bill, due to be debated and see a tight vote in only a matter of weeks: https://www.facebook.com/events/364477554729152 If you live interstate, show your support by sending key crossbench MPs an email: https://www.oscarslaw.org//pass-laws-to-fight-west-austral
02.01.2022 Basil, the rather reactive Staffy X very first visit to this location. He's a very visual orientated dog, it's all a about the eyes, less so about the nose, and apart from being distracted by other dogs, there was novelty like council workers cleaning the environment etc. Well done guys. #staffymix #reactivedog #norauscanineservices #dogtraining #townsville #tropicalliving

01.01.2022 You must stop doing your daily walk! It is not good for you. You must stop doing your daily workout! It is not good for you. You must stop doing your daily yoga... session! It is not good for you. You must stop doing your daily run! It is not good for you. Why? Because all these activities will raise your cortisol levels. Ok. Now think about that for a minute... If we (or your dog) stopped doing everything that raises cortisol levels, we would be completely sedentary, asocial beings. Also remember this: Cortisol, and your HPA axis, do not differentiate that well between distress and eustress. Cortisol is necessary, normal. What is NOT normal, and is certainly damageable, is sustained, chronic levels, regardless of the cause (psychological, or physiological). Acute levels may, or may not, indicate a problem. Knowing this, go back and read the papers screaming that cortisol is evil and ask yourself if the authors understand the endocrinology. Sometimes they don't. See more
