19.01.2022 The theme for the Museum's School holiday programme is "A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words" and here is the proof! The kids have created the drawings by using a replica Pantograph, similar to what was used on the HMS Sirius. There is one more week of school holidays, so head "daun' taun" and pick up an activity booklet from any Museum or the R.E.O Bookshop. All school aged children and locals living on the island have free entry to all Museum venues. #norfolkislandhistory #kingston #museumactivities

19.01.2022 At 11 o’clock on the 11th day of November in 1918 the guns fell silent. On this day and on ANZAC Day each year, we acknowledge those who sacrificed their tomorrows for our today. "In 1914, when the First World War began, there were about 800 people living on the island. Seventy-seven Islanders went overseas to fight. You can look at the names on the Cenotaph, and see that two of the people who went were women. Eleven men were killed in the war, and twelve came back wounded" ...~ Courtesy of the Norfolk Island Living Library Lest we Forget ~ We nawa Gwen forget dem Be sure to visit the Museums on your next visit. The Royal Engineers Office (REO) currently has a temporary display of wartime memorabilia.

18.01.2022 A team of divers have been on Norfolk Island since 6 November conducting four test trench excavations from the sea floor on the west side of the Kingston Pier. The divers are on island to investigate archaeology deposits ahead of Commonwealth funded improvements to the channel planned for next year. Team members from the company Cosmos Archaeology are leading the project and include Cosmos Coroneos, Jane Mitchell, Milly Bendell and Conner McBrian. Three divers from the compa...ny Professional Diving Services are also present and include Malcolm Venturoni, Jason Blackwell and James Parkinson. You will also be able to spot a number of local faces with Ebony, Jesse and Jett working as sifters on the project, carefully checking the debris for artefacts. The dive team have also been contracted to inspect the 1790 shipwreck site of HMS Sirius which is located off Slaughter Bay. This is the first step in the development of a new management plan for the site. The majority of artefacts from the Sirius wreck were excavated and preserved on Norfolk Island in the 1980s, with a later dive project occurring in 2002. A number of anchors and large ballast mound still remain in-situ which the team have re-photographed and examined for the purpose of documenting how the site has changed over the decades since the initial survey. The team has recorded what appears to be a previously undocumented anchor located within one of the smaller ballast mounds. Conditions over the site have provided the opportunity for an excellent aerial video recording by drone to be done. This footage has been generously donated to the project by Nathan Weaver. Like the photogrammetry, the footage will provide an additional perspective to study the remaining artefacts. Have questions or just curious about diving or archaeology? The team will be back on Island in the coming months, be sure to catch them daun’taun when they return. #maritimehistory #kingstonpier #HMSSirius See more

09.01.2022 With over 60 children visiting the Norfolk Island Museums as part of the School Holiday program, we had many people both young and old inspired to draw a cartoon of Norfolk Island life. All entries went into a draw, and we are pleased to announce the following winners: Alasdair: Cartoon of a Medivac flight Frejja: Cartoon of the whaling industry... Ruby: Cartoon of a plane Multiple entries focused on planes (with Foxy’s cartoons at the REO perhaps providing guidance) but other topics depicted include fishing, birthday parties, falling avocados, Norfolk’s sea life and trips to Mount Pitt. We’d like to thank all those who entered and supported the School Holiday program. All the artworks will stay on display with the Temporary Exhibition ‘Pacific Pictures and Publications at the R.E.O until March 2021. #norfolkislandhistory #kingston #museumactivities
