21.01.2022 Norfolk Island made bonnet to join exhibition in Tasmania Willow Court is located in New Norfolk, Tasmania and is the longest continuously operating mental health institution in Australia running from 1827-2000. New Norfolk was just one area allocated to the group of settlers and convicts who had been forced to abandon Norfolk Island as a settlement in 1814. A site for the invalid, mentally ill and disabled was set up in New Norfolk as early as 1827. By 1848 the hospital had... transitioned into solely a mental institution. The earliest building on site is the Palladian style Barracks constructed in 1831, designed by colonial architect John Lee Archer. The complex of buildings at Willow Court are hosting an exhibition of bonnets from Roses from the Heart to specifically commemorate female convicts who attended the institution. Norfolk Island was asked to contribute a bonnet to represent the many female convicts who were rehomed and established the European settlement of the area. Some residents of Norfolk Island may be familiar with the Roses from the Heart project run by Tasmanian artist Christina Henri. Running since 2003, the project has seen thousands of bonnets made to commemorate the 25,566 women transported to Australia as convicts from 1788-1853. A convict’s name is stitched onto the bonnet and used to promote her story and commemorate their life. Through the Norfolk Island Administrator, Eric Hutchinson’s contacts in Tasmania, the museum was made aware of an opportunity to promote Norfolk Island’s convict past at the November exhibition at Willow Court Asylum. Despite short notice, local Beverly Buffett was able to complete a beautiful bonnet to take part in the exhibition and ensure the women who re-settled in New Norfolk from our own island are remembered. The bonnet has pink embroidery, delicate pink roses, and a sash for securing under the chin. It includes the words, ‘From Norfolk Island to New Norfolk’. Thank you to Bev for her great work and to Anson King for ferrying it over the Tasman Sea for us. Knowing the talent here on Island and the many female convict stories we have to tell, the Norfolk Island Museum hopes to extend the project in the future with the goal of displaying local stories and bonnets made by current island residents. If you’re interested in participating in bonnet making for a Norfolk Island exhibit, please contact the Museums by phoning 23788 or email [email protected] . 18.01.2022 HMS Sirius Museum is OPEN to the public! Daily 11.00am to 3.00pm "Yorlyi kam lukorn" - Come and have a look The building is known as the former Protestant Chapel as it was built in 1840 as a chapel for the convicts in the Second Settlement during the time of the reformist Commandant, Alexander McConochie. After the close of the settlement it fell into disrepair by the 1870s. It was substantially re-built in the 1890s and used once again as a Church. 17.01.2022 Today marks 10 years since the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage Property was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. With two convict settlements from 17881814 and from 18251855, Kingston and Arthurs Vale Historic Area, Norfolk Island is one of 11 historic sites that together form the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage Property. Collectively, these places tell a story of exile from one side of the world to the other and how a nation was formed from hardsh...ip, inequality and adversity. Each site represents key elements of the story of forced migration of convicts and is associated with global ideas and practices for punishment and reform of criminal elements of society during the modern era. 14.01.2022 Pier Store Museum is OPEN to the public! Daily 11.00am to 3.00pm "Yorlyi kam lukorn" - Come and have a look The Pier Store was originally known as The Beach Store and was built in 1825 as a Commissariat (a Government or Military store). Located at the end of Kingston Pier, it was the most efficient and suitable place to unload goods to. After a tsunami hit the building in 1834 it was converted to a mill where corn was ground by use of hand-mills. In 1841 the upper storey beca...me a guard-room and the lower continued to be used as a store. After the arrival of the Pitcairners in 1856 the lower floor became a customs shed and the upper storey was also used as a coffin room. A complete renovation of the building began in 1977 and it was then used as a store for lighterage gear, old crankmill machinery and pallets of beer. In 1988 the building became available for use by the Norfolk Island Museum. See more

13.01.2022 On Saturday the 6th, the Seventh Day Adventist Church held a Bounty Day worship service with a focus on family bibles and the rich faith heritage of the Island. Three bibles from the Norfolk Island Museum Trust Collection (NIMT) were also on show and a short presentation given. The first eight pages have always been well documented as they contain the names, birth and death dates of the Adams family. Legible names include John Adams, George Adams, John Adams II, Jonathan Adam...s, Josiah Adams, Polly Adams, Sarah McCoy, Margaret Adams, Richard? Adams. It is believed to have been owned by John Adams II, who also recorded his grandfathers and fathers details. A number of interesting finds can now be added to this fascinating objects history. Many of the other family bibles on display at the SDA church service had spent the majority of their lives at home due to their value and often their large size. The same had been assumed about the Pitcairn Bible. However, a service program sheet was found neatly tucked into the bible on page 319. Titled, LENT SERVICES, 1884 the program outlines the pastors speaking at the Church of England and include Rev. A Penny, Rev Charles Bice, Rev, R. B. Comins, Rev A. Brittain, and an unidentified Bishop. Also included is a small devotional by J. R. Selwyn most likely the unidentified Bishop also overseeing services. Other interesting finds contained within this bible include two fragments of hair, a dried leaf used as a bookmark, and even a preserved and pressed moth (which was removed). In the book of Isaiah from chapters 24 to 37, someone has coloured in and decorated the enlarged letter beginning each paragraph. It is uncertain whether the marks were made during its use on Pitcairn or Norfolk Island. One passage is also marked with an X in Ephesians Chap 4 verse 14. The Church of England program sheet and the annotated pages are an important find, showing that the bible was brought to services on Norfolk Island and not just in use while on Pitcairn Island. It also indicates the Isaiah passage was studied at some point, and confirms that the bible was actively read and not just a family heirloom.

04.01.2022 With over 60 children visiting the Norfolk Island Museums as part of the School Holiday program, we had many people both young and old inspired to draw a cartoon of Norfolk Island life. All entries went into a draw, and we are pleased to announce the following winners: Alasdair: Cartoon of a Medivac flight Frejja: Cartoon of the whaling industry... Ruby: Cartoon of a plane Multiple entries focused on planes (with Foxy’s cartoons at the REO perhaps providing guidance) but other topics depicted include fishing, birthday parties, falling avocados, Norfolk’s sea life and trips to Mount Pitt. We’d like to thank all those who entered and supported the School Holiday program. All the artworks will stay on display with the Temporary Exhibition ‘Pacific Pictures and Publications at the R.E.O until March 2021. #norfolkislandhistory #kingston #museumactivities

04.01.2022 "What I like most about visiting Norfolk Island is you can detach yourself from life as much as you want to; stay in a remote cottage, swim on deserted beaches ...and wander through bushland while barely seeing another person. Or meet the friendliest folk in the Pacific wholl take you in like a long lost family. The choice is entirely yours, just watch out for those cows!" "In 1914, when the First World War began, there were about 800 people living on the island. Seventy-seven Islanders went overseas to fight. You can look at the names on the Cenotaph, and see that two of the people who went were women. Eleven men were killed in the war, and twelve came back wounded" ...~ Courtesy of the Norfolk Island Living Library Lest we Forget ~ We nawa Gwen forget dem Be sure to visit the Museums on your next visit. The Royal Engineers Office (REO) currently has a temporary display of wartime memorabilia.

02.01.2022 The Commissariat Store is located on the lower level of All Saints Church on Quality Row. When the Pier Store was flooded in 1834 Commandant Anderson decided to build a new Commissariat away from the waterfront. The Commissariat took only six months to build and was opened in 1835. It consisted of three floors and a basement. The first floor contained a glass partitioned office, a meal room, office and store. The second an engineer store, grain store and office. The third flo...or was used solely for the storage of grain. The basement originally housed the liquor and general store which in 1845 was converted to an issue room. The front steps were constructed after the main building masonry had been completed and are unusually positioned as they cover a part of two of the basement windows. After the Pitcairners arrival in 1856 the basement continued to be used for a store. In 1874 the main or lower floor ceiling was removed to create a double story space for All Saints Church. The basement level was opened as a Museum in the 1990s. Today this Museum displays fascinating items from archaeological digs around the Kingston Site including Polynesian and Convict artefacts, and is open Monday to Saturday 11am - 3pm. 01.01.2022 A team of divers have been on Norfolk Island since 6 November conducting four test trench excavations from the sea floor on the west side of the Kingston Pier. The divers are on island to investigate archaeology deposits ahead of Commonwealth funded improvements to the channel planned for next year. Team members from the company Cosmos Archaeology are leading the project and include Cosmos Coroneos, Jane Mitchell, Milly Bendell and Conner McBrian. Three divers from the compa...ny Professional Diving Services are also present and include Malcolm Venturoni, Jason Blackwell and James Parkinson. You will also be able to spot a number of local faces with Ebony, Jesse and Jett working as sifters on the project, carefully checking the debris for artefacts. The dive team have also been contracted to inspect the 1790 shipwreck site of HMS Sirius which is located off Slaughter Bay. This is the first step in the development of a new management plan for the site. The majority of artefacts from the Sirius wreck were excavated and preserved on Norfolk Island in the 1980s, with a later dive project occurring in 2002. A number of anchors and large ballast mound still remain in-situ which the team have re-photographed and examined for the purpose of documenting how the site has changed over the decades since the initial survey. The team has recorded what appears to be a previously undocumented anchor located within one of the smaller ballast mounds. Conditions over the site have provided the opportunity for an excellent aerial video recording by drone to be done. This footage has been generously donated to the project by Nathan Weaver. Like the photogrammetry, the footage will provide an additional perspective to study the remaining artefacts. Have questions or just curious about diving or archaeology? The team will be back on Island in the coming months, be sure to catch them daun’taun when they return. #maritimehistory #kingstonpier #HMSSirius See more
