18.01.2022 How can we continue to show kindness to each other, that we are not alone and in this together? Here’s some ideas...

17.01.2022 Last night in partnership with Bisinella Developments and Millars Lara over 60 community members from our regular Monday Neighbourhood Meal were treated to a takeaway/delivered Roast Chicken dinner along with a Pantry Pack. Thanks to our volunteers as well for organising and delivering these meals and pantry packs to the neighbourhood. Its wonderful to see our community and neighbourhood working together to make sure everyone is especially cared for during this time.

17.01.2022 Last week @The Farm Next Door was in the Geelong Advertiser featuring a partnership with our friends Good Cycles to deliver fresh vegetables via bike to our neighbours around Norlane and Geelong: "The quest for fresh vegetables rides on despite the coronavirus pandemic. A troupe of Geelong volunteers, known as Norlane’s Farm Next Door, have continued to deliver fresh produce across Norlane despite the closure of its weekly Saturday market amid the pandemic.... Volunteer Tom Allen said changes were made possible after Good Cycles Geelong, where he works as a mechanic and trainer, was forced to suspend the launch of its bicycle powered waste collection service. With both projects in limbo, Mr Allen decided to put the bike to good use. The project grows veggies on a suburban house block and resells them at low prices at local markets around the suburb. With COVID canceling markets he has been delivering door to door. Picture: Peter Ristevski Tom Allen volunteers for Farm next door project in Norlane. Picture: Peter Ristevski With the market on hold and no use for the bike, Mr Allen decided he would ride to deliver vegetable boxes to homes around the area. It’s been really good for developing connections within the community, there was a lot of anxiety during the height of the lockdown, he said. It was nice to have the interaction, even if it was just through a door dropping a box of veggies on the other side. The volunteer program runs under a pay as you feel system, typically offering up to 50 per cent off for residents of the 3214 postcode. The market is expected to re-open in coming weeks."

17.01.2022 An interesting article introducing the concept of economic localisation aiming to help us move towards a happier future for people and planet. "Ultimately, economic localization is about re-scaling the economy back to a human level. It is the process of building economic structures which allow the goods and services a community needs to be produced locally and regionally whenever possible. Localizing economies can strengthen community cohesion and lead to greater human health and material wellbeing, all while reducing pollution and degradation of the natural world." https://www.localfutures.org//l/learn-about-localization/

16.01.2022 The team at The Farm Next Door will be hosting a series of DIY urban farming workshops on Saturday mornings while the neighbourhood market takes a break over the winter months. We hope to create a time of co-learning where we increase our skills and knowledge about how to grow food in our own backyards and neighbourhoods and cultivate community-sufficiency. Our first event is below, would love to see you there if it interests you. #eatthesuburbs #urbanfarming #local #welovenorlane

15.01.2022 Thanks David Wilson for sharing this article, it has loads of great thoughts, questions and ideas to keep us reimagining what our neighbourhoods could look like. "Re-imagining our local neighbourhoods might also suggest a new way of thinking about how we plan our cities. Our behaviour response to COVID-19 is shifting the metropolitan planning spotlight from the macro to the micro the local neighbourhood and to the importance of applying as much thinking and resources to that area as to the dynamics of whole metropolitan area. A collaborative approach to a re-imagined neighbourhood will allow local communities to be actively involved in shaping their own and our collective future."

15.01.2022 After such a great response by the community to our dinner packs, our neighbourhood social enterprise cafe is offering a new thing...

14.01.2022 Big shout out to local businesses supporting our efforts during these challenging times to help us continue the Monday neighbourhood meal in Norlane. Usually this meal sees over 60 locals working together to put on a great feed for themselves and their neighbours. During this time of isolation the support of these businesses has enabled the neighbourhood meal to be prepared at a cafe and delivered to people’s homes along with a pantry pack. As usual here in this town, it is inspiring to see the ways in which people in Geelong continue to support one another. Let’s continue carefully cultivating this community spirit, searching for positive changes to our social systems and together address our exisiting challenges and all the new ones that come our way.

14.01.2022 World Localisation Day : A world-changing programme of inspirational talks, interviews, films, humour and music. Streaming online on June 21st. Let’s imagine a very different world...... One in which most of our food comes from nearby farmers who are part of our community and who ensure food security year round. Imagine children being free to play and explore their world safely under the watch of neighbours whom we know and trust. Imagine the money we spend on everyday goods continuing to recirculate in the local economy, building community wealth along the way. Imagine local businesses multiplying and providing ample, meaningful employment opportunities, instead of our hard-earned cash being immediately siphoned off to some distant corporate headquarters. Economic localization can make these visions a reality for us all. What is Localization? Ultimately, localization is about re-scaling the economy back to a human level. It is the process of building economic structures which allow the goods and services a community needs to be produced locally and regionally whenever possible. Localizing economies can strengthen community cohesion and lead to greater human health and material wellbeing, all while reducing pollution and the degradation of the natural world. It is not about isolationism or putting an end to international trade. It is simply about rebuilding human-scale economic structures by producing what we need closer to home. From community gardens to credit unions, from alternative learning spaces to small business alliances and co-ops, local economies create networks of place-based relationships that affirm our human desire for connection to each other and to the earth. It's the economics of happiness. By creating this structural basis for community, local economies make caring for one another and for the land into guiding principles of daily life. Imagine a world in which multinational businesses and banks adhere to the rules of society not the other way around.

13.01.2022 Here’s a piece for some weekend reading and also why we love our social enterprise neighbourhood cafe The Aviary Cafe which we hope can re-open soon! The hours I’ve spent in my local coffee shop have increased my level of attachment to my neighbourhood and the people who inhabit itwhich, over time, has made me less likely to dream of being somewhere else https://stevemacdouell.com/three-things-ive-learned-in-my-/

13.01.2022 It’s time to think more deeply about the place we call home, our neighbourhood... Re-imagining our local neighbourhoods might also suggest a new way of thinking about how we plan our cities. Our behaviour response to COVID-19 is shifting the metropolitan planning spotlight from the macro to the micro the local neighbourhood and to the importance of applying as much thinking and resources to that area as to the dynamics of whole metropolitan area.

11.01.2022 During isolation our neighbourhood meal and peoples pantry has become a pickup and home deliveries initiative. Local business leaders including Bisinella Developments, Costa Property Group and Keith and Barry Fagg have supported financially to allow us to provide 40 families each week with a hot takeaway meal prepared by a local cafe and a pantry pack. Each week neighbourhood volunteers come together to pack the food and deliver the meals uber eats style around Norlane, Cor...io and Lara. This week there was a wonderful surprise included of a Geelong Cats merch pack thanks to Bisinella Developments. Together we hope all of our neighbours feel supported during this time and can't wait to connect again in person as restrictions improve. You can read all about it here: https://bisinella.com.au//geelong-cats-fans-from-the-nort/

11.01.2022 Growing food right in your backyard addresses the challenge of food security especially in times of trouble, creates a sense of cooperation sharing in your community, improves your health and wellbeing, reduces carbon emissions and helps the planet and of course it is so satisfying to watch something planted as a seed grow into food for your table and your community. That’s why in Norlane we promote and champion initiatives like The Farm Next Door, who have been working hard as the seasons change to grow more good and healthy food for the neighbourhood.

11.01.2022 Did you know that we recently celebrated The Aviary Cafe first birthday! It's been one great year here at The Aviary! Here is just some of what we have achieved! But we couldn't have done any of it without your support. A huge thank you to all of our customers, supporters, and encouragers along this journey.... A huge thanks goes to Baptcare for its support and opportunity to co-locate at the Coasthaven Community Hub on Robin Avenue. Their massive investment in community facilities, affordable housing and aged care in Norlane is amazing. We can't wait to see what this next year at The Aviary brings!

10.01.2022 Many of us in Norlane often dream about new types of neighbourhood. What would a neighbourhood based around the idea of a farm look like? Other people are not just dreaming but putting ideas into action.

08.01.2022 On Tuesday 15th September we were very excited to see the completion of the first stage of the Spruhan Ave Neighbourhood Hub redevelopment and receive the keys from Hamlan Homes for our brand new 5 bedroom residence built on site at the Hub. The first stage of the neighbourhood hub is a five-bedroom residence where community development workers will live and work alongside community members to offer neighbourhood hospitality, care and facilitate programs and local initiatives...Continue reading

08.01.2022 Good news from our neighbourhood cafe....

06.01.2022 We love the work of Relationships Australia and Neighbour Day. Check out their great resources here http://neighbourday.org/resources/

06.01.2022 Here is what our neighbourhood cafe is offering the Norlane and Geelong community : affordable and nutritious food delivered to people’s door! Supporting this initiative helps keep you feed and The Aviary going during this challenging time

06.01.2022 Place based stigma. Not helpful Geelong Advertiser. People need to ask what’s it like for someone living in Norlane/Corio to wake up in the morning and over breakfast read a headline like that. How does it affect a young persons mental health or sense of self worth? Yes there are issues as identified in the article about the neighbourhood mentioned but why publish a comment that puts down another neighbourhood and the thousands of people who live here? ‘I feel safer in Norlane and Corio’: Geelong’s crime hotbed https://www.geelongadvertiser.com.au//94cf74df00f91801898b

03.01.2022 Thanks to the THE RK GROUP - corporate and event catering for their donation of food to our community meal! A great sign of goodwill that if we all work together during this time we can help each other and our neighbourhoods safe and healthy.

02.01.2022 Interesting article on screen time vs green time, kids mobility and safe neighbourhoods. How can we make our neighbourhoods more green and more safe for our kids? There is no doubt whatsoever that green time improves our health and wellbeing, and our attention and ability to focus. There is a strong correlation there [and] that correlation comes from speaking to teachers," she said. The way back is to increase the amount of green space in our cities and towns, but also to ch...ange our thinking around risk and children, according to Professor Gray. 'Life out of balance': Major study evaluates 'screen time' vs 'green time' and the consequences for kids http://www.abc.net.au//screen-time-mental-health-/12612454

02.01.2022 Check out this wonderful and colourful winter veg being grown at our urban farm in Norlane.
