25.01.2022 Good morning, hope you all had an awesome weekend. Not many sleeps till Christmas now! Some fun Christmas food facts to start the week: - Fancy a festive family bucket this Christmas?... In Japan, eating Kentucky Fried Chicken has become something of a Yule tide tradition for millions of people, and can be so popular some diners have to preorder their special KFC Christmas dinner two months in advance. Mince pies banned? Did you know it was once illegal to consume these popular festive treats on Christmas Day? Banned by Oliver Cromwell and by extension the Church of England. Anyone found baking them would be punished, or as more often happened, encouraged to inform on the customers who ordered them. In order to fox the Church, mincemeat pies became smaller and easier to hide, where once they were much larger, made from meat and used to feed whole families. Yule logs - This chocolate treat takes its inspiration from the Celts with the tradition originally started by the Druids, who believed the sun stood still for twelve days in the middle of winter and during this time a log was lit to conquer the darkness, banish evil spirits and bring luck for the coming year. Large scale Yule fires remained a common way to mark the season over the centuries in Scotland, particularly in northern harbour towns, however, the chocolate version remains popular throughout the UK. And that's today's fun food facts, hope you enjoyed them!

Shakespeare gives a recipe for a warden pie, which includes mace, nutmeg, ginger, prunes, raisins and saffron to colour it. The 1st-century Roman cookbook Apicius makes various mentions of recipes which involve a pie case. By 160 BC, Roman statesman Marcus Porcius Cato (234149 BC), who wrote De Agri Cultura, notes the recipe for the most popular pie/cake called placenta. With the development of the Roman Empire and its efficient road transport, pie cooking spread throughout Europe. ("What did the Romans ever do for us!") The first known pie fight appeared in 1909’s Mr. Flip, in which an obnoxious general store manager gets his comeuppance in the form of a pie to the face. Though the film itself is forgettable, other filmmakers of the time were inspired by the pie throwing scenea visual gag perfectly suited to the then-soundless medium. Almost instantly, the pie fight became a staple of silent films. That's today's fun food facts! Have an awesome day everyone, hope to see you at lunchtime!

Fun food facts time, looking at food which is good for sportsmen and women (hope Queensland are reading this!)... First on the list is rice. Rice and pasta are essential foods for sportsmen and women. However, rice has the particularity of being gluten-free, a useful aspect for intolerants. Next up, the breakfast of champions. Today, we know that not all cereals are equal. For breakfast, you can choose a large bowl of oatmeal combined with a vegetable drink to improve your health. But did you know that consuming 70 g of whole grains such as oatmeal would reduce the risk of premature death by 22%. This is because these cereals help to prevent certain cancers and cardiovascular diseases, which represent the #1 era cause of death worldwide. And we can't forget eggs - the humble egggg is one of the favourite foods of athletes. Wrongly accused of being responsible for raising the level of "bad" cholesterol, it can be easily consumed at any time of the day and in 1001 different ways! For lunch, try some chicken. Sports performance requires a high-performance muscle. However, white meat, like chicken, promotes muscle development, maintains our muscles and participates in recovery. Last one for today - Bananas! They can be taken everywhere and consumed in no time at all, making them one of the sportsmen's favourites. Easy to eat, it is useful to boost, provide quality carbohydrates before exercise or prepare for recovery in post-training. Have an awesome day everyone!

22.01.2022 Need something healthier in the morning? Why not have one of Marika’s smoothies, or a fruit salad? This one is a mixed berry smoothie made with Greek yogurt, mixed berries, milk and honey.

Fun food fact - if you say "Food by Ange" 5 times in a row, even just saying it will make your mouth water. Imagine what it's like eating Food by Ange dinners! OK - some Friday fun food facts about...Italy: - Pizza was invented in Italy, in Naples, in the 19th Century It’s also there that the Margherita pizza was invented, when pizzamaker Raffaele Esposito made a simple pizza for the queen of Italy, Queen Margherita. He made a pizza to the color of the Italian flag with mozzarella for white, tomato for red and basil for green. Who likes Tiramisu? Did you know that unlike some classical Italian desserts such as sfogliatelle or cannoli, it was first made in only 1960. Lots of Italian dishes are made with tomatoes, however...the tomato is originally from the Americas, and was only brought back by the European explorers in the 16th century. They first appeared in Italy, in Tuscany, in 1548, and were first used as tomato sauce in pasta in the early 1800’s. That's today's fun food facts, have a fantastic weekend everyone, and hope to see you all for lunch today.

22.01.2022 Happy Thursday everyone, looking like another sunny day! Celebrate with one of Ange's pulled pork tacos - they're delicious! Slow cooked pulled pork in Ange's blend of Mexican herbs and spices, with sides of tomato salsa, feta and soft tacos - you know you want one! Fun facts time: -... Tacos are really really old! While there is some debate over when exactly the first taco was created, most experts state that the first taco was actually invented somewhere between 1,000 and 500 B.C. At the time, the taco was more about having an edible spoon and since has morphed into the dish that we know today. The Biggest Taco Ever Was HUGE! The biggest taco ever made was constructed on November 20th, 2011 in Queretaro, Mexico. It was 246 feet long and was made with carnitas as the filling. (Carnitas are cooked the same way as pulled pork, but are then browned in the oven to finish) There is a Right Time of Day to Eat Tacos For most people, any time of day is the right time of day to eat tacos, but there is actually a specific taco time. According to Mexican tradition, seafood tacos are meant to be eaten at lunch, while antojitos are to be eaten at dinner time. (Antijitos are small snacks /savoury bites)! That's today's fun food facts! Have a fantastic day everyone!

While chili peppers aren’t native to Indiathey were introduced to India by the Portuguese in the 15th centuryIndian consumers have fully embraced the spicy plants. Not only do Indians grow and eat more chili peppers than any other nation in the world, but they also have some of the spiciest peppers: The bhut jolokia (also known as the ghost chili) is grown in Assam, Nagaland, and Manipur and is said to be 400 times hotter than the average hot sauce. Cassava might not be the most popular dish in Australia, but after rice and wheat, the starchy root veggie is the third most important source of carbohydrates globally. A staple food in many African nations, cassava (also known as manioc, tapioca, and yuca) can be eaten like a potato, ground into flour, or used to make the tapioca balls found in many puddings and teas. Many nations serve up delicacies that, if prepared incorrectly, can be deadly. In Japan, a puffer fish dinner can paralyze and asphyxiate diners when prepared wrong, while the brain mushroom, which is popular throughout Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, and the Great Lakes region of North America can be fatal if eaten raw. In Namibia, meanwhile, the adult giant bullfrog is considered a delicious delicacybut young giant bullfrogs, eaten before they reach maturity, carry a toxin that can cause kidney failure. Japan isn’t the only country that produces rare and expensive fruits, but it does seem to be home to some of the priciest. On separate occasions, fruit growers in Japan have auctioned off a single 17-pound Densuke watermelon for 650,000 yen (approximately $8,500), a bunch of Ruby Roman grapes for $8,900, and a pair of Yubari King Melons for a whopping $28,500. That’s all for today everyone, have an awesome day!

Fun food facts time: - Coffee is packed with antioxidants, which have significant health benefits. They might even help prevent cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and Parkinson’s Disease. Drink up. Coffee may play a role in weight loss. Caffeine is a stimulant and it can help you feel energized, which can help you control what you eat. In 16th century Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul), it was legal for a woman to divorce her husband if he didn’t keep the coffee pot full. The world’s first webcam was created in the early ’90s. Its sole purpose? To check if the coffee pot was full. Scientists at Cambridge University got tired of walking all the way to the coffee pot only to find it empty, so they set up a camera to track it. That's todays fun food facts, have an awesome day!

19.01.2022 Congratulations - you made it to Friday! Hope you all have a fantastic weekend planned! Some Friday fun food crimes today (all true, they were on the internet!) : -... "I have a friend who puts ketchup on cake." - who would do this? "My local restaurant once served mozzarella pizza with marshmallows." - really! "My cousin ate a ketchup sandwich and dipped it in his coffee." - seriously wrong, on so many levels! "I think a slightly sweet beer in some plain or Honey Nut Cheerios is game-changing!" - looks like someone needs that morning beer buzz... "My brother eats mayonnaise and Nutella sandwiches." - individually, yes, but mixed...yuk! "I caught my friend eating chocolate ice cream mixed with mayonnaise." - again...yuk! "I put soy sauce on grapes."...what makes people think of mixing things like this? "I had a friend stay with me and he would put ketchup and mustard on every Pringles chip he ate." - see above! "My girlfriend loves to eat banana and mayonnaise sandwiches, and she thinks nothing is wrong with it but it sounds terrible." - just...no...! Don't think people would really do this? Choose from salads, sandwiches, pies, sausage rolls, or today's special (from the Food By Ange range) - slow cooked beef massaman curry made with coconut cream, potatoes, and Ange's secret herbs and spices, and roasted peanuts... Time for fun food facts: - The most popular lettuce is iceberg, closely followed by romaine. So how many types of lettuce are there? There are actually five distinct types of lettuce: leaf (also called loose-leaf lettuce), Cos or romaine, crisphead, butterhead and stem (also called asparagus lettuce). Where does iceberg lettuce get its name? Till the 1930s, it was known as Crisphead lettuce. Then, because when it was shipped by Californian growers with heaps of crushed ice, it became known as iceberg lettuce! Lettuce is a vegetable that is pretty much immune to any form of preservation. You can’t freeze, dry, can, or pickle lettuce! And the funny final fact for today - The word avocado comes from ahuacatl, which means testicle in Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs. This is probably due to their shape and the fact they grow in pairs! Have an awesome day everyone!

18.01.2022 Welcome to a hot and humid Friday. Rain and storms on the way - may as well have the year go out the same way it came in! One more week till Christmas - make sure you've got all your shopping done (we'd recommend Mortdale Wholesalers )! Friday fun facts about coffee: -... One cup of black coffee only has one calorie Legend has it that 9th-century goat herders noticed the effect caffeine had on their goats, who appeared to "dance" after eating the fruit of the Coffea plant. A local monk then made a drink with the produce and found that it kept him awake at night, thus the original cup of coffee was born. Coffee beans are technically seeds. They're the pits of the cherry-like berries found on the flowering shrubs, but we call them "beans" because of the resemblance to legumes. Espresso means "pressed out" in Italian. This refers to the way espresso is made forcing boiling water through pressed coffee grounds. Have an awesome weekend everyone!

18.01.2022 Happy Thursday everyone, this time next week will be Christmas Eve! Weather today is hot, humid, with rain this afternoon :-( Remember - tomorrow is your last chance to put in an order for pickup before Christmas, don't delay, order today :-) Fun food facts time, all about Christmas; -... Legend has it that candy canes were invented in 1670, when the choirmaster of the Cologne Cathedral commissioned candies shaped like a shepherd’s crook so they could be handed out to children attending the church’s crèche scene in order to keep them quiet. The stripes came later. Animal crackers were first introduced around Christmastime in 1902. The string on the box was originally intended to be used to hang the boxes on Christmas trees. Roast turkey or another type of poultry is the main protein in a typical Christmas dinner today, but back in medieval times the preferred poultry was actually peacock! Boar was also a Christmas mainstay. It wasn’t until Henry VIII had turkey for Christmas in the sixteenth century that it became the norm. Anyone having peacock for Christmas!!! Between the wine, mixed nuts, multiple helpings of turkey and sides, pie, cheese, and booze, the eating and drinking done during Christmas Day alone can add up to more than 7,000 calories per person, according to one study. Maybe skip that second piece of pie this year! That's today's fun food facts, have an awesome day everyone!

The comic strip Garfield’s titular character is a big fan of lasagna. Garfield has a long love affair with this perfect package of pasta, cheese, and marinara. From the moment of his birth in Mama Leone’s Italian kitchen to today, Garfield has never met a lasagna he didn’t like. Add the date to next year's Calendar - did you know July 29th is celebrated as National Lasagna Day. The largest lasagne was made in Poland to honor Italy's team in the 2012 Euro Cup. Coming in at 5.29 tons, it took ten hours to bake and was divided into 10,000 portions. So for only $3 more, I get DOUBLE the amount of chicken. Bargain! Get your orders in today, and stop getting ripped off! Fun food facts today :- The term as American as apple pie traces back to 14th century England. The Pilgrims brought their pie-making skills, along with apple seeds, to America. The term upper crust refers to early America when the economy was difficult and supplies were hard to come by. Only affluent households could afford the ingredients for both the upper and lower crusts of a pie. This is different to another definition of Upper Crust, where the phrase originates from the top crust on a loaf of bread which is often better than the bottom, which may be burnt. But why let historical facts get in the way of a good story! And last one today - Australians each eat an average of 12 meat pies a year, that's 270 million pies, while in New Zealand they are even more popular, with the average Kiwi eating 15 meat pies, which is 66 million a year. Have an awesome day everyone - it's nearly Friday so get your orders in before the weekend!

It is thought that the word lasagna for the pot is derived from the Greek word for chamber pot"! The earliest lasagna recipes known are dated from the thirteenth century. At that time, tomatoes were not known to Europeans. This means that they couldn’t have used them in the recipes. However, depending on the recipe, different cheeses are used. Ever had green lasagne? Black pepper was a luxury in the middle ages And that's today's food facts! Come on down for lunch and support a local business!

Thank you to our wonderful customers, suppliers and tradies who have helped us during this difficult year, we really appreciate you all! Apart from feasting on a traditional British Christmas meal, with roast ham or turkey, mince pies and Christmas pudding, many Australians and New Zealanders enjoy a barbecue, salads and seafood (grilled prawns are a favourite). And let's not forget the annual argument over who invented the pavlova! Germany is known for its popular Christmas food, including stollen, a fruit cake filled with marzipan and dried fruit. The most popular main meals include avgolemono (a chicken and rice soup with egg yolk and lemon), and roast lamb or pork. Traditional Christmas foods vary throughout Italy, however panettone is one of the most popular desserts across the country. This sweet bread, filled with chocolate, raisins, candied fruit and nuts, weighs around 1kg. It’s placed on the table for the whole family to tear and share throughout the celebrations. Some more fun food facts about pies: - The pie was invented as a way to preserve meat in medieval Europe. Amazingly, the pastry, today an essential part of a good pie, was not meant to be eaten! Historians believe that the Greeks actually originated pie pastry. The pies during this period were made by a flour-water paste wrapped around meat; this served to cook the meat and seal in the juices. Historians have also recorded that the roots of pie can loosely be traced back to the ancient Egyptians. The bakers to the pharaohs incorporated nuts, honey, and fruits in bread dough, a primitive form of pastry. Drawings of this can be found etched on the tomb walls of Ramses II, located in the Valley of the Kings. That's today's fun food facts, have an awesome day!

So you know that pulled pork is one of the most beloved foods available at barbecue restaurants, but whereabouts did the word Barbecue originate? Any guesses??? The word barbecue is actually derived from the term "barbacoa" The Arawak tribe of Caribbean natives, who spoke a language called Taíno, used the term to refer to cooking meat over a raised wooden grate. Spanish explorers first wrote the word down in the 1500s. The concept then spread in popularity, especially throughout the American colonies, and has been one of the most common and well-loved cooking methods ever since. So that's another fun food fact to impress your friends with next time you're at a barbecue! The meatball was made by the Columbus Italian Club in Columbus, Ohio back in 2011 and took three days to cook! To make the meatball, the club used a rounded vessel housed in a handcrafted oven made of stainless steal, faux bricks, stucco, and a viewing window. Nobody Knows Where the First Meatball Was Made! Recipes go back to the Romans the classic cookbook by Apicius includes a section on minces, mixtures of meat (peacock, pheasant, and rabbit were their favorites) with other ingredients. 05.01.2022 Welcome to a hot and sunny Friday. Not sure if any cafes are doing a Trump Sandwich as a special! Personally, we'd recommend a salad (from Norman St Food obviously!) on such a hot day instead! Fun (mainly food) facts Friday about current /former President Donald J Trump: -... When asked what the "J" as his middle name was, he reportedly replied "Genius"...(you can't make this up!) For breakfast, he eats either bacon and eggs, cereal or a McDonald’s McMuffin. Lunch is typically a meatloaf sandwich. Meatloaf is essentially just meat. There’s no roughage. And no fibre impacts on gut health. If you don’t feed your gut bacteria with fruit and vegetables, that can impact the immune system and lead to infections. (like Coronavirus...?) And for dinner, some nice healthy food - a full McDonald’s dinner of two Big Macs, two Filet-O-Fish sandwiches, and a small chocolate shake a total of 2,430 calories. Alternatively, when he’s not eating fried chicken or burgers, Trump enjoys a good steak. He likes them cooked well done, and served with...ketchup! And in the interests of unbiased coverage, let's look at (potential) President Joe Biden. Breakfast can be scrambled eggs - with ketchup...! However if Biden has one favorite meal, it's an Italian one. There is one specific pasta dish he requested to have served at all of his speaking engagements: angel hair pomodoro (Simply puree plum tomatoes, olive oil, garlic and salt and toss with hot angel hair pasta.) Other favourites include chicken parmesan, spaghetti with marinara sauce, and pizza. Lots of pizza! That's today's fun food facts - have a great weekend everyone!

Ange is making some of her famous Crispy Fried Chicken, and more of her slow cooked roast beef on a roll, with onion gravy. Mouthwateringly delicious!... Fun food facts time again: - The Scots "invented" deep fried chicken (yeah, there's a surprise! The type of fried chicken favored in the U.S. may have been imported by Scottish settlers to America, whose citizens favored pan-frying chicken as opposed to boiling or roasting it the way the English did. Yep, and from there we moved on to deep fried pizza, haggis, mars bars...As we say in Scotland, if you can eat it, you can deep fry it! Ever heard the phrase "no spring chicken" ? You've probably heard that putdown to describe sometime who's not as young as he appears to be. The phrase comes from the early 1700s when chickens born in the spring got better prices than those who had been through the winter. Spring chickens were preferred for frying too, as they were more tender. If a buyer got an older bird in disguise he would complain that it was "no spring chicken." It's a global dish Fried chicken may be most closely associated with America, but in reality you can find variations around the worldIn Korea, it's twice fried and dunked in a sweet and spicy sauce. In Japan it’s cut into small pieces and fried in a style similar to tempura (and is called karaage); in Thailand it’s given a powerful marinade and served alongside sticky rice; and in Senegal it’s coated in peanut flour. Which countries have the most chicken? In a global survey in 2000, the numbers were: - China - 3.6 billion US - 1.7 billion Indonesia - 1 billion Brazil - 950 million Mexico - 476 million That's this week's fun food facts, thank you for reading them. Fun food facts today about Italy: - Tiramisu is a very well-known... dessert. First made in 1960, it can be found in many countries around the world. Ange even made some for a corporate event we had on Sunday afternoon! Garlic bread is often associated with Italian culture. Go to any Italian outside of Italy, especially pizzerias, and you’ll find garlic bread on the menu. However you wouldn’t find this garlic bread anywhere in Italy. The closest it gets is the bruschetta, a grilled slice of bread with a bit of oil and rubbed with garlic. Miles away from the greasy garlic butter garlic bread you’re used to eat! You know these fancy coffee names you find in restaurants or at your local coffee place? Cappuccino, macchiato, frappucinos, Yeah, that’s definitely not how Italians drink their coffee. In fact, Italians mostly drink espresso, a small shot of coffee. Coffee with milk is only ordered in the morning for breakfast. Tomatoes and tomato sauce are a staple of Italian cuisine. But did you know that tomatoes only appeared in Italy in 1548, in Tuscany? The tomato is originally from the Americas, and was brought back by the European explorers in the 16th century. We have to wait to the 18th century to see the tomato rise in popularity in Italy, and it was first used as tomato sauce in pasta in the early 1800’s. And since we're coming up for Christmas...Panettone is a classical Italian cake: a sweet bread n the form of a dome, with candied orange, citron and dried raisins. This local pastry is originally from Milan, but now typical to the whole country. While it can be eaten throughout the year, Panettone is most closely associated to Christmas. It’s usually prepared for the festivities, and eaten in Christmas and New Year. That's today's fun food facts, have an awesome day everyone!

It has h...elped a number of small businesses, especially in the hospitality industry, during these depressing COVID times. On a lighter note, it's Fun Food facts time - yay! Some fun food facts about pork: - China was the first nation to start domesticating pigs, starting around 7,500 B.C. In the 1700s and 1800s, the animal was introduced to Europe, where the population mingled with wild boars. Without them, pulled pork might not exist. Pig meat is so ingrained in the typical United States diet that two holidays are dedicated to it. One is Glazed Ham Day on April 15, so celebrate tax day with a plate of glazed ham. Then there’s National Roast Suckling Pig Day on December 18. Pulled pork is not only delicious but also healthy. It contains high levels of protein, iron, zinc, and vitamin B, for example, along with riboflavin, amino acids, and antioxidants. For that reason, it’s excellent for improving the health of your skin, eyes, bones, and nervous and immune systems. And I think I've mentioned this one before - In Denmark, there are twice as many pigs as people. That's today's fun food facts, have an awesome day everyone!

Today we have creamy tortellini with bacon and mushroom as a special - its so good, some of our Food By Ange customers even order it for dinner (you know who we're talking about Sue!). Fun facts for today: -... Spaghetti & Meatballs is not an Italian dish (I didn't know this!). Italians don't put meatballs on spaghetti. Pizza wasn't invented till the 18th Century (in Naples) In Italy, pasta is a once a day dish The pope once set quality standards for pasta (in the 13th Century Each region in Italy has its favorite ways to enjoy pasta. She's also making LASAGNE AS BOTH A SPECIAL AND ALSO IN TRAYS TO TAKE HOME FOR DINNER! Make sure you phone the cafe (0451 132233) and order one ASAP! Fun food facts time...sorry, this one is a little bit longer than usual. Did you know that while lasagne is the meal made almost globally, it was born in Greece, refined by the British, but is still considered to be an Italian dish? Confused? Let me explain. Long ago, in the years we number B.C., Hephaestus, the Greek god of fire, created a tool that could be used to cut a flour and water dough into strips. From those dough strips, the Greeks made laganon. Food historians believe this was a flatbread, and although it bears little resemblance to a pasta dish, it was a humble beginning. As you know, all great things Greek were appropriated by the Romans when that empire had dominion over the planet. In the 1st century A.D., Cicero had his lagani. The Empire expanded its reach northward to what is now Great Britain. It was there that a cookbook was published, as early as 1390 that includes the first lasagne. However, it took the Italians to perfect lasagne, and in 16th-century Italia, both savory and sweet lasagne dishes were popular. So now you know! Have an awesome day everybody!
