20.01.2022 NAAJA's support of staff has been key to the success of this excellent program and has enabled several Aboriginal people of the Northern Territory to succeed in studying law (as well as the benefits to all participants regardless of whether they have continued study). We encourage employers to support their staff for the upcoming course in Jan 2021, and can share information or give advice based on our experiences (send us a DM). NAAJA's CEO Cilla Atkins said:... NAAJA is proud that we’ve supported many of our Aboriginal staff to attend the CDU Indigenous pre-law intensive. We’ve seen a noticeable improvement in the confidence and skills of many of our staff who attend the program. Not only are we building into the future, we see immediate benefits to our organisation by supporting staff to attend the program.

11.01.2022 NAAJA is delighted that our Principal Legal Officer Mr David Woodroffe (known to us as Woody) received the ‘Indigenous Alumnus Award’ and also the overall category the ‘Distinguished Alumnus Award’ at the Inaugural Charles Darwin University (CDU) Alumnus Awards event on 22 October 2020. His nomination noted ‘he is amongst the first cohort of Indigenous law graduates in the Northern Territory and is currently one of the most senior Indigenous lawyers in the nation. To the many... Indigenous law students, graduates and lawyers who have followed his path he has served as a leader, mentor and friend.’ David Woodroffe is descended from the Jingili Modburra clan group. David commenced studying a Bachelor of Laws in 1994 at the Northern Territory University. Of his decision to study law, David says: ‘I wanted to study law for my family, so that in some way I could ensure that injustices such as the Stolen Generation would never happen to Aboriginal people and my family again’. In 2016 David served a key role establishing Winkiku Rrumbangi NT Indigenous Lawyers Aboriginal Corporation. He has served as President since and in 2019 delivered the Opening Plenary to the National Indigenous Legal Conference held in Darwin on 13-14th August. His leadership and stewardship is key to an organisation currently with 10 directors who are Indigenous lawyers and is the strongest and most active group of its kind in the nation. David is an inspirational role model, and has established and built upon his reputation for incredible hard work on behalf of his clients and a passion for protecting and promoting the rights of Indigenous people. In his speech, David spoke about his family growing up in the Kahlin Compound at the old Hospital site in Darwin, and how these stories first inspired him to pursue a career in law. He spoke about the importance of justice in the Northern Territory and what this means from an Aboriginal perspective. Mrs Atkins said ‘NAAJA is thankful to Charles Darwin University for establishing these awards and for recognising Woody in its inaugural award as the Indigenous Alumnus Award and especially the Distinguished Alumnus Award’. Congratulations Woody!!

09.01.2022 The Disability Royal Commission wants to hear from people with disability, their families, carers and supporters.

05.01.2022 Woody recognised in today's NT News by Charles Darwin University for receiving two prestigious awards and at their Inaugural Alumni Awards. A True Trailblazer.
