25.01.2022 On this day in 1997, the ‘Bringing them Home Report’ was handed down. Officially titled the ‘Report of the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal an...d Torres Strait Islander Children from Their Families’. The report established an official history of the Stolen Generations and made recommendations for reparations and funding as well as advising Australian Parliaments to offer official apologies for past wrongs and injustices. Fay Clayton, a member of the Stolen Generations, had this to say of her experiences. The fence on the hill at Cootamundra Girls Home separated us from our loved one. At every opportunity, I would take my younger sisters to the fence and gaze out hoping and praying our Mother would come and take us home. You can see this work and more in ‘Talking Blak to History’: bit.ly/32HNCLA Motherproof Fence About 2012 Fay Clayton

03.01.2022 Lismore needs a Koori Youth Court. Share this petition widely. ---> http://bit.ly/kooriyouthcourt The petition reads: The Northern Rivers and North Coast of NS...W have a disproportionate number of Indigenous youth in contact with the criminal justice system. We desperately need a Youth Koori court in Lismore to service the surrounding regions so we can reduce the number of Indigenous youth in contact with the criminal justice system. Koori courts help Indigenous youth to feel that their culture matters and is respected. Koori courts help kids get back on track and away from the criminal justice system. Koori courts focus on rehabilitation not punishment. They have proved to be successful in turning Indigenous youths lives around and connect them back with their elders, community and culture. Koori courts reduce the likelihood of youth ending up in adult custody and reducing the risk of another Aboriginal death in custody. Please establish a Koori court in Lismore. 03.01.2022 The north coast is mourning the loss of Uncle Kevin Torrens who was a loved and respected Elder of the Western Bundjalung people. [Advisory: Posted with the per...mission of Mr Torrens' family] Most knew Mr Torrens as a softly spoken man, who brought a gentle but persistent persuasion to being a trailblazer, committed to improving the lives of his people. In 1982 when he was one of New South Wales' first Aboriginal teacher aides he started the preschool at Tabulam - and with parents and the Education Department provided a place for the Indigenous and non-Indigenous children of Tabulam to learn and play. For 12.5 years he was part of the Aboriginal cultural support and case management teams of the Balund-a Program, the world's only correctional facility where offenders are sent to live and work before they are sentenced, in a bid to keep them out of prison. He was a cultural mentor to residents and his work colleagues. The story in this video post was another pioneering achievement. When Mr Torrens' ageing father-in-law Ernie Hickling asked him to get back the lands of his ancestors, it seemed like an impossible mission, but he succeeded against all odds. That property called Jubal was among the first land purchases in the early years of the Indigenous Land Corporation's buy back scheme. "Those early ones are significant because in those first few years it was about building the Indigenous estate," Ms Button said. The team at ABC North Coast send our condolences to Mr Torrens' family, friends and the Bundjalung peoples.
