22.01.2022 During these uncertain times our pets are just as important. Please read the below advice given by the Australian Veterinary Association regarding COVID-19 and your pets.

22.01.2022 This is one of our lovely ward nurses, Kim, doing a TPR on Holly, the beautiful bulldog. Holly had a BOAS surgery to help with her breathing problems. She's easily one of the happiest and sweetest bulldogs we've ever looked after! All she wanted was cuddles from all the nurses and you can bet that we gave her exactly what she wanted! #ncvs #northcoastvets #vetspecialist #bulldog #sunshinecoastvet

13.01.2022 Charlie Girl beat the odds this week after cycad toxicity poisoning . Cycads (Sago Palms) are extremely poisonous and if ingested have a 50-80% mortality rate in dogs once they show clinical signs. All parts of the palm are toxic however the seeds contain the highest level of the toxin cycasin. Cycasin causes gastrointestinal irritation, and in high enough doses, leads to fatal liver failure. Charlie Girl was being babysat by grandparents who chose to do some garden...ing last weekend including cutting down the cycads. Unbeknown to them, Charlie girl decided to have a chew on the trunk and it wasn’t until that night when she started to vomit did they realize something was not right. She was taken to Emergency and then referred to North Coast to be seen by Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Karen and Medicine Intern Dr. Samantha, who started her on an array of medications to hopefully prevent the possible life-threatening liver damage. Luckily, Charlie Girl was treated in time saving her life. If her grandparents hadn’t been so quick thinking it sadly would have likely been a very different outcome.

13.01.2022 Did you know the wrinkles and thickness of a Shar-Pei coat is due to inherited skin disorder cutaneous mucinosis, in which there is a build-up of mucin in the layers of the skin. Unfortunately despite the appeal of the adorable wrinkles, these wrinkles can cause a few health problems including the wrinkles impairing vision. Luckily Dr Guy is able to perform a procedure where the excess skin is tacked back for several weeks in hope to prevent future more invasive surgery. Little Winston underwent this procedure today but had more cuddles then he had wrinkles!!!

12.01.2022 Another fracture at NCVS?! It must be something in the air - but with the amount of fractures we see each week you can be certain our surgeons know what they are doing! On Friday night Hugo, a 3 year old French bulldog was referred as an after hours consult due to a spiral fracture on his left hind leg. Hugo had his surgery scheduled perform on Saturday by Dr Craig and his team of nurses - and has just been discharged home! What a busy weekend for poor Hugo and mum Alex! What a perfect opportunity for Hugo to stay in bed all rugged up and receive plenty of TLC

12.01.2022 We wouldn’t advise jumping out a car window.... because you might just end up like Darcy an 8 month old labradoodle who fractured her right acetabular, as well as luxating her hip requiring a surgical hip toggle to be placed Lucky Miss Darcy was consulted, radiographed and had surgery performed the same and then discharged the following day! Let’s just hope the windows were tightly wound up on the drive home!

07.01.2022 Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, our staff at NCVS are working tirelessly to ensure your pets receive the treatment they deserve while still maintaining strict measures for not only their staff safety but also you, as our valued clients. Last week Millie was referred to NCVS by Blanck Street Veterinary Surgery after they diagnosed Millie with a foreign body. Millie, the 6 year old Cattle Dog's owners had noticed she had started vomiting and suspected she had eaten some rocks p...rompting them to take her to their regular vet. After being admitted to NCVS radiographs showed that not only had Millie ingested a large rock that was now in her stomach, Millie also had an undiagnosed diaphragmatic hernia that required surgical repair. Surgery went well, and it was discovered Millie had been surviving with the majority of her small intestine, a small portion of liver and some of her stomach within the thoracic cavity. Surgery involved extracting the contents from the thoracic cavity and placing them back in their rightful position then suturing the hernia closed. The stone was then removed from the stomach. Due to the extensive surgery and dehydration she had endured, Millie required to stay in hospital for a few days under observation while being maintained on intravenous fluids, pain relief and antibiotics. We are happy to say Millie is now doing well and was willing to give us a handshake on her way home.

06.01.2022 Don’t forget our emergency department is open today for any concerns with your fur babies.

04.01.2022 6 month old Gonzo was referred to NCVS last week by Walker Street Veterinary Surgery due to a broken radius and ulna that required surgical repair. Although one of the more common fractures seen in little dogs, the surgery requires surgical expertise placing a plate and screws to secure the fracture allowing the bone to heal. With advanced surgical equipment, surgeon Dr Nima was able to plate the fracture while using the fluroscopy machine - a type of medical imaging that ...shows a continuous X-ray image on a monitor, much like an X-ray movie. Gonzo had surgery the same day of consultation and Surgical Registrar, Dr Nima had little Gonzo repaired in no time, and discharged the following day!

03.01.2022 On New Years Eve, Kenny was at the dog park when he was injured by a stick! The stick hit the back of his throat. Kenny seemed fine until a few hours later when he began to continuously stretch out his neck and increase of swallowing. Kenny was taken to the Animal Emergency Service where radiographs were taken and was then referred to North Coast Veterinary Specialist and Referral Centre for further care. Kenny was taken to MRI which showed a large foreign object about 3.5c...m located within his neck (medial to his mandibular gland) and a large amount of swelling surrounding the object. Surgery was performed later that evening to remove the piece of stick and Kenny recovered well. Kenny is now back ready to head back to the dog park, but this time sticking to the tennis balls! *Check out the comment section to see the stick being removed during surgery! **
