23.01.2022 NAIDOC Week 2020 ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’ (Image and Theme Description from naidoc.org.au) National NAIDOC Always Was, Always Will Be. Always Was, Always Will Be. recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years.... We are spiritually and culturally connected to this country. This country was criss-crossed by generations of brilliant Nations. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists. Australia has the world’s oldest oral stories. The First Peoples engraved the world’s first maps, made the earliest paintings of ceremony and invented unique technologies. We built and engineered structures - structures on Earth - predating well-known sites such as the Egyptian Pyramids and Stonehenge. Our adaptation and intimate knowledge of Country enabled us to endure climate change, catastrophic droughts and rising sea levels. Always Was, Always Will Be. acknowledges that hundreds of Nations and our cultures covered this continent. All were managing the land - the biggest estate on earth - to sustainably provide for their future. Through ingenious land management systems like fire stick farming we transformed the harshest habitable continent into a land of bounty. NAIDOC Week 2020 acknowledges and celebrates that our nation’s story didn’t begin with documented European contact whether in 1770 or 1606 - with the arrival of the Dutch on the western coast of the Cape York Peninsula. The very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to First Nations peoples. Our coastal Nations watched and interacted with at least 36 contacts made by Europeans prior to 1770. Many of them resulting in the charting of the northern, western and southern coastlines of our lands and our waters. For us, this nation’s story began at the dawn of time. NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country a history which dates back thousands of generations. It’s about seeing, hearing and learning the First Nations’ 65,000+ year history of this country - which is Australian history. We want all Australians to celebrate that we have the oldest continuing cultures on the planet and to recognise that our sovereignty was never ceded. Always Was, Always Will Be. #NAIDOCWeek2020 #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOC National NAIDOC

19.01.2022 What is the Cervical Screening Test? The Cervical Screening Test is a simple procedure to check the health of your cervix. It looks and feels the same as the Pap Smear, but tests for the human papillomavirus (HPV). Your first Cervical Screening Test is due two years after your last Pap test. After that, you will only need to have the test every five years if your results are normal. If you are due for a check, call us on 54448077 to make an appointment.

18.01.2022 Meet Kyleena! She’s the new contraceptive IUD (intra-uterine device). Kyleena is slightly smaller than other IUD’s and slowly releases a lower level of hormone (levonorgestrel) over a period of 5 years. Because of this, Kyleena actively works to prevent pregnancy for 5 years with a reliability rate of 98.5% over this entire time amongst the most effective and reliable around!... Similar to her sister, Mirena, Kyleena works to prevent pregnancy by acting locally at the cervix and uterus. She causes the cervical mucus to thicken, preventing the passage of sperm through the cervix, and the sperm and egg from coming together, and in turn, stops fertilisation from happening. Kyleena also works to reduce the monthly growth of uterine lining which can often mean that some women with a Kyleena can experience a gradual reduction in the number of days and the amount of bleeding with monthly periods. Kyleena is a great option for contraception for many women, although there are some situations where the use of a Kyleena is not appropriate. If you have been considering an IUD, ask us about Kyleena and we can have a discussion specific to your body and your needs. 02.01.2022 Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Australia (PANDA) This year, PANDA Week is spreading awareness for expectant and new families to ‘Tell Someone Who Cares’. And for friends and family who suspect someone within the family unit is struggling, offer to listen or help out however possible, the smallest act can help a family to feel supported.... A few reminders on Perinatal Mental Health: You are not alone, and you do not have to do this alone Symptoms of perinatal mental health can affect both parents You may be able to identify a cause or trigger for your feelings, or you may not know why - both are valid The feelings of struggle can be eased when the family unit is supported There are options for what support can be offered, and a discussion about how this works for you and your family is a place to start To ‘tell someone who cares’ means to reach out to your family, friends or trusted person to let them know that you need help. And know that at NCWH, we care too. If you think you could be experiencing symptoms of Perinatal Anxiety or Depression, tell your family, GP or healthcare provider, call the PANDA Helpline on 1300 726 306 or for more information on symptoms, support and real stories visit this link: https://www.panda.org.au/i/what-is-perinatal-mental-illness @PANDAnational #PANDAnational #PANDAweek2020 #perinatalanxietyanddepressionaustralia #perinatalmentalhealth #perinatalanxietyanddepression #womenshealth #ittakesavillage #northcoastwomenshealthcentre Image from PANDA.org.au
