21.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE BY JIM MADDEN MP MEMBER FOR IPSWICH WEST - 11th January 2017 MADDEN FIXES NOTORIOUS NORTH IPSWICH BLACK SPOT ... Residents and visitors to the Ipswich area will soon benefit from a long overdue $2.75 million safety upgrade of a notorious North Ipswich black spot at the intersection of Pine and Delacy Streets. Member for Ipswich West, Jim Madden MP, said the contract had now been awarded to local company Bielby Holdings Pty Ltd, with work expected to start on Tuesday 17 January 2017, weather permitting. The upgrade will include the installation of traffic signals, new line marking, designated cycle lanes and a free left hand turn from Delacy Street into Pine Street. Mr Madden said. Connectivity of the road network for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists will be improved at this busy intersection, With about 11,000 vehicles using this intersection every day, the upgrade will also benefit pedestrians, who will be able to use the intersection safely via new crossing signals. Mr Madden said access to local businesses and tourist attractions such as The Workshops Rail Museum on the Cobb and Co Tourist route would also be enhanced. As well, access for emergency vehicles in this area would also be greatly improved by the completion of the works. The Palaszczuk Government is committed to improving safety and road network connectivity for all road users, Mr Madden said. I’ve lobbied hard for these works since well before I was elected as the Member for Ipswich West, so I am pleased to be able to deliver long overdue improvements to this busy intersection for people living and working in the City of Ipswich. Mr Madden thanked Mark Bailey, the Minister for Main Roads and Transport, the Department’s officers and the Ipswich City Council for their assistance in bringing this project to fruition. Jason and Michelle Bazeley, owners of the North Ipswich Pet Shop, welcomed the news that traffic lights and pedestrian crossings would be installed at the intersection. The traffic island that was installed as a temporary fix in about 2014 has proved a disaster for their business as it severely restricted access for their customers. I estimate that my turnover has dropped over 50% since the traffic island was installed. These roadworks are good news for my business and other businesses in this area. Jason Bazeley said. Nine direct new jobs will be supported during the life of this project which is expected to be finished in May 2017, weather permitting. Local businesses will also benefit by providing materials and services. The $2.75 million funding is part of the Palaszczuk Government’s Safer Roads Sooner program which aims to improve road safety at known and potential crash locations on state-controlled roads. Jim Madden said he had requested that a Variable Message Sign be installed at the intersection, while the roadworks are being completed, so that residents and road users are kept informed about the project.
