25.01.2022 Right, who keeps taking chunks of 2018? Wasn't it only new years yesterday? On a frustrated note, the NBN is still messing with my phones and the call centre I get in India keeps passing it 'up the line' which is code for 'we won't call you back'. We're doing our best, but please don't think we're ignoring you if the phone does funny things. Oh, and I'm now officially middle aged. Keep brushing!
25.01.2022 Gods, I'm terrible at keeping up with social media. To be fair though, we are getting snowed under at the moment. The Christmas rush has certainly begun and I'm booked almost solid right up to christmas day. Amy still has some spots, though, so still call if you have anything you need done before then. Apologies, though, If you can't get me. Why does Christmas get busy for dentists, you may ask. Lots of people's health funds renew their limits on December 31st and they want ...things done before the new allotment. People are going away and want their teeth either cleaned or fixed before they go. Children are on school holidays, and finally (but not all inclusively) people want their niggly problem fixed before tucking into some top quality pork crackling!! We will still look for emergency spots every day and people do cancel at times, so be assured, we will do our best. If I don't see you (and with my sporadic use of social media that is possible) let me wish you the best of holidays, no matter what your beliefs! See more
25.01.2022 Well, that was 20 years that just disappeared in a heartbeat. Penny and I celebrated our 20th year anniversary last week (sorry I wasn't about). 28 years together (yep, it took me 8 years to marry her...) still feels like yesterday.
23.01.2022 Hey everybody. Just to let you know we are having some serious issues with the phones at the moment. They haven't been right since switching to the NBN, but we are constantly on Optus's case to try and get them fixed. In the meantime, if you need us and you can't leave a message, send an email to [email protected] and I'll try and check every few hours. thanks to those who have understood, which has been most. There have been some who have been super aggressive to my poor receptionist. Please be assured we have not done this on purpose, nor would we ever! This hurts my business as much as it mucks up your day. Thanks, guys. Troy.
23.01.2022 It's all official, the child health benefit scheme is here to stay. A massive effort from the dental association has seen the government reverse it's decision. Now, those of you who are eligible (it's means tested) can have your children seen by the school dentist or private if you wish. Remember to use it, though. The recent attempt to remove it was justified by saying that 'not enough parents took advantage of the service'. Over on the personal side of your favourite dentist, I'm heading off in late april to drive the Targa Tasmania car rally. This is the event I've waited a very long time for. I know there are a few of you who will appreciate the event, so I'll try and get some pictures up of the race. Wish me luck!
22.01.2022 Christmas time!! I can't believe I have 5 minutes to write this, but it is crazy this year. We are totally booked up until new year, but remember, people do cancel so still call and see what the cancellation list can do for you. We are closed on the 23rd until the 28th, then again the 30th until the 3rd. I've allowed some emergency time on the 29th for all of you who break teeth on pork crackly and minties! Merry Christmas everyone!
20.01.2022 Hello everyone! I was going to post a happy one today saying how we had gotten back on track finally... but the universe likes irony. Mostly, we are trading as normal now, but the last week has given us a few curve balls. equipment failure, sick staff (no COVID thank goodness, but even a sniffle means isolation now - until tested) and a lot of people looking to make up for the 2 months we had off. So, to let you all know, we have no receptionist for a few days but we will get... to the answering machine as quickly as we can. My room is repaired as of today and I am back. I will try to get those people I had to put off in as quickly as I can. My apologies for those people I had to reschedule, I had no equipment to work with. For those of you who understood, thank you so much. Those who didn't probably don't read this anyway. Stay safe and well, the universe is messing with us all! Troy. See more
20.01.2022 So, our first patient came in with Carona today. If only he had lime disease as well... thanks Lach!
19.01.2022 Hello everyone. Just to let you know we have been hit with the Optus bug and have no phones for a while. I'll keep messenger open and come back and check it as often as i can. I'm sure Optus would apologise...
19.01.2022 Time for a 'way too infrequent' update. Today, I'll weigh in on the recent run of flossing articles. There is a small run of articles circulating about how floss may not be necessary after all. It's important to read past the headlines, because the meat of the article is saying that flossing hasn't been scientifically proven therefore it's effectiveness can't be measured. What? I'm pretty sure the effectiveness of oxygen hasn't been scientifically published. Most people are ...smart enough to realise we need it and don't need a 100 page document to prove it. Okay, I'm subscribing to hyperbole, but I stand by the sentiment. may I suggest you run your own scientific experiment. Floss for a month. Then don't floss for a month. See which one feels better at the end of each month. We are all scientists, making decisions based on evidence we see each day. I've seen 25 years of teeth that have been flossed and ones that haven't and I can tell you I will never stop cleaning between my teeth (in my case floss and waterpiks). Like all things though, there are caveats. Flossing badly can cause harm. Some people have biology that all but negates the need for flossing and everyone needs flossing to a different degree (both genetics and diet alter that greatly). Sorry, this is getting longwinded... To put it all in a nutshell, you know how much better your teeth feel when you floss. We don't have to wait for a scientific study to tell us what we already know. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTWyx0iI01o See more
19.01.2022 A photo sent in from a patient. Good to know my patients can still give the thumbs up while being worked on! Just as interesting to note the half interested dental assistant in the corner. Yes, it's time to start training my daughter in the ways of Dental-Fu!!
19.01.2022 Quote of the day that cut to my heart. 11 year old girl watching the music clips. Prince comes on. "Is that Justin Beiber?" she asks. My week is ruined...
17.01.2022 Me again! You poor people have to hear from me far too much at the moment. I just need to clarify my earlier statement about the work we are doing. At the moment, there are no examination appointments being booked and we are cancelling all non important work. This means any checkups that are currently booked are being asked to cancel until we get word from the government that we can return to normal operations. However, If you booked a checkup because you had a bothersome tooth, feel free to let us know and keep the appointment. We'll do whatever we can to get you out of trouble. This also means WE ARE ON SHORT HOURS and may not be here when you call. We are checking the messages daily though, and will respond. Also, you can message me here or e-mail on [email protected]. Stay safe and be good to each other!
16.01.2022 No internet this morning, which means no phones. Must be a Wednesday. Back up and running now though :)
16.01.2022 Hello everybody. Just a short reminder we are closed tomorrow. See you Tuesday!
15.01.2022 Hello everyone. I need to apologise for any disruption to appointments for a couple of weeks. I have had a dear friend pass away and there have been some days I have needed to cancel with little notice. Not a good time of year to do that, with people needing things done before Christmas. Thank you all in advance for your understanding. Troy
15.01.2022 Hello everyone! What could make me crawl out from under my self imposed social media rock? Why nothing short of a pandemic, of course. Just letting you know how things are going here. Lots of steralisation goes on in a dentist surgery, of course, so if you need work done, and you are not sick yourself, the risks are low. We are asking everyone who is noticeably ill to try and reappoint though. Remember, there is also a cold going around, but if you get COVID on top of that i...t increases your risks of developing lung problems. Please, though, (and I can't believe I have to ask this) be kind. We have had some very nasty racially motivated phone calls about one of our dentists in the last few days and some very angry people who can't get in for a while due to the backlog. (not that I'm easy to get in to see anyway!) We are also running very low on masks but should be able to limp by for the foreseeable future. At the risk of going all yoda on you all - it is in times like these we see our deep personalities rise, please don't let them be uglier than the disease. See more
14.01.2022 Hello again. Must be an extraordinary crisis... I've posted more in the last few months than in the year before!! Thought I'd let you know what we are doing here during the current pandemic. Currently, the government has stopped at level 2 restrictions, which means we need to limit unnecessary visits but can stay open. In practice, this means we are encouraging people to defer their appointments unless there is an urgent need. Of course, I normally book out a couple of months... in advance so it's business as normal. We will still see all our patients unless they have signs of COVID (as in, breathing difficulties, fever, coughing) or flu symptoms (no one wants to already have the flu when COVID comes calling) or has returned from overseas within the last 2 weeks. Please rebook if this is you. Of course, the government response if fluid, so stay tuned and please understand if we have to change this at the last minute. Level 3 will mean NO general checkups without a legitimate concern, and we may have to reappoint people with a days notice. It's a balancing act, but we will try and weigh the needs of the one against the needs of the many. Live long and prosper!
13.01.2022 Hello everybody, Looks like I need to clear something up. Until next week (and even a little bit then by the looks of bookings) we will be in the office very sporadically. This week, for instance, I am not in at all, and Amy is only in on part Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. No, for that one person who asked, I did not die in a fiery motorcycle crash, just having some time off while I can. Our staff will return your calls, we might just be a little slower getting back to you than normal - Many apologies for the stress. Stay safe, and we will return you to your regularly scheduled Troy in no time.
13.01.2022 I won't bore you all with the grand saga that has been optus. Suffice to say we still only have one phone (3491 3354) and no optus email. Please direct all mail now to [email protected]. I'm going to sob quietly in my corner now...
12.01.2022 so, now we have phones back, we have no e-mail... should be back up tomorrow (they tell me) but message or call until then if you can. To those with e-mails waiting, Sorry! hopefully they will still be there when it comes back...
12.01.2022 bad news, we got broken into last night here at the surgery. good news, he got so exhausted throwing everything around he completely missed the important stuff. More bad news, Poor Georgia has to clean up all the shredded paper. Who thinks people hide money in paper shredders?!?!
11.01.2022 Hello all. Firstly, thanks for all your patience whilst I've been away. Needless to say, I've has a BLAST! No injuries, no damage, just ludicrous speed and beautiful Tasmanian scenery. Paul Stokell, the man who set up this tour, came 4th overall in the competitive race. Any of you who are drivers, I can heartily recommend the Targa experience. Now, back to the clinic on Monday where I'm sure some of you have been saving up some interesting toothaches! Meantime, here are some promised pictures.
11.01.2022 Sometimes, I think my patients know me better than I do myself... This little gem came from one of my patients (Wayne, you know who you are!) A little paint, a display board, and Viola! My batbike in model form. This made my week!!
11.01.2022 It's fairy day today at North Lakes Family Smile! For those of you who were waiting for a photo of me in fairy costume, no such luck. I came dressed as a bikie...
11.01.2022 A thousand apologies to those who have found their appointments shifted yesterday and today. I've caught a dose of the dreaded Lurgy and spent most of those days in bed. Up and about now, I'll be there tomorrow. Troy.
10.01.2022 sometimes, patients will gift me a little something they have found that reminds them of me. This is the latest, and I think highly appropriate!! Thanks Joe! Oh, and happy Easter to those who celebrate. Watch that sugar!
10.01.2022 A quick reminder today... we are closed for the Pine rivers show holiday on Monday. The week after, I am away on the Monday (my wife and I celebrate 30 years together on the 17th!!). Time to pull out dusty photos and remember I was once thin...
09.01.2022 Hello everyone. I'm back from my first holiday to see snow!! I know, I'm way to old to see snow for the first time but that didn't stop me from acting the child. (No surprise to those that know me) We'll be catching up with work post haste, and I'll finally find a way to get that pesky website up to date with the new email address. See you all for checkups!
09.01.2022 OK, so I have had to finally admit I suck at this social media thing and check myself into remedia. I might not post for ages, but I'm thinking of you! I'm off to an implant course this weekend, so we are closed Saturday. No idea yet when I might start doing implants myself, but I'm working up to it. On a personal note, big shout out to Amanda, and ex-dental assistant of mine, who just gave birth to Elijah. He's too beautiful for words and they are super happy. Congrats smurfette!
09.01.2022 Gotta love politics! The child dental scheme was due to finish in September, but we have word it couldn't pass the senate, and so we are able to process claims right up until december 31st. Good news for those parents who couldn't get in by the last cut off. Get in quick while it's still here! On a personal note, my painting is getting better. Here is my latest completed work. May I never have to paint marble by hand again!!
07.01.2022 Hello all! I'd like to welcome Dr Murray How-Kee to the practice! Murray has joined us on Mondays and Fridays to help with some of the backlog. Murray is a charming man, with our patients interests at heart. For those of you still looking for implants, Dr Gohil will still be around for consults, coming in from his new Coolum practice once a month.
07.01.2022 Hey everybody! Thought I'd let you know we're not ignoring you. Well, we are, but it's because there has been a lot of medical problems for some of our families (not mine so far...) and we are having staffing problems. So if the phone rings out, please try and leave a message. As soon as someone is available to get back to you we will. A thousand apologies to those with urgent concerns. So far, we have still managed to get most of our toothaches in with minor delays. Hopefully, back to full working order around here very soon, but there will be a period where we have some temp staff in who might not know all our regulars and their needs. Please bear with them, there's extra sprinkles on your polish paste in it for you! Thank you, and remember... it's not paranoia if they really are out to get you. Troy

03.01.2022 One of the great parts about my job can be the people I meet. Over the last 20 something years I have met children who now have children of their own, people with stories of their youth that amaze or curl your toes, people who have changed their lives in ways I can only marvel at. Also, the clever and intelligent people who do some really cool stuff. One recent example is a Math teacher and his sharp family. Lately, they have been working together to produce youtube videos t...hat try and explain complex principles in easier terms. Starring his daughter, it's a good watch if you want to try catch up on some interesting math concepts. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaulCzDc6_6i27yjoOtuWaQ Keep being amazing, but find time to brush while you do your thing!! Troy
02.01.2022 Hey everybody. My apologies, but we are closed Wednesday the 26th. Im down in Sydney for my Nannas funeral. She was 95!! A great life and a great lady.
